Solving design optimization problems via hunting search algorithm with Levy flights

2014 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.52 No.2

This study presents a hunting search based optimum design algorithm for engineering optimization problems. Hunting search algorithm is an optimum design method inspired by group hunting of animals such as wolves, lions, and dolphins. Each of these hunters employs hunting in a different way. However, they are common in that all of them search for a prey in a group. Hunters encircle the prey and the ring of siege is tightened gradually until it is caught. Hunting search algorithm is employed for the automation of optimum design process, during which the design variables are selected for the minimum objective function value controlled by the design restrictions. Three different examples, namely welded beam, cellular beam and moment resisting steel frame are selected as numerical design problems and solved for the optimum solution. Each example differs in the following ways: Unlike welded beam design problem having continuous design variables, steel frame and cellular beam design problems include discrete design variables. Moreover, while the cellular beam is designed under the provisions of BS 5960, LRFD-AISC (Load and Resistant Factor Design-American Institute of Steel Construction) is considered for the formulation of moment resisting steel frame. Levy Flights is adapted to the simple hunting search algorithm for better search. For comparison, same design examples are also solved by using some other well-known search methods in the literature. Results reveal that hunting search shows good performance in finding optimum solutions for each design problem.

Hysteretic Behavior of Conventionally Reinforced Concrete Coupling Beams in Reinforced Concrete Coupled Shear Wall

        Soo-Yeon Seo,Hyun-Do Yun,Young-Soo Chun 2017 International Journal of Concrete Structures and M Vol.11 No.4

This paper presents the experimental results of four full-scale coupling beams in which only horizontal reinforcements are placed, without diagonal reinforcements, with the aim to develop reinforcement details for coupling beams used in connecting side walls in a wall-slab structural system. Each coupling beam specimen was designed according to the deep-beam design procedure that does not use diagonal reinforcements and that is found in current standards. Two cases for basic deep-beam design specimens were investigated wherein (1) U-type reinforcement was added to prevent sliding shear failure of the joints and (2) horizontal intermediate reinforcements were placed. The coupling beam specimens were fabricated with a shear span-to-depth ratio (aspect ratio) of 1.68 and were connected to walls only by horizontal reinforcements, i.e., without diagonal reinforcement. The experimental results indicate that the strength of the beams was about 1.5 times the designed strength of a strut-and-tie model, which suggests that the model is available for predicting the strength of coupling beams with conventional reinforcement layouts such as horizontal and transverse reinforcement bars. The deformation capacity of these conventionally reinforced concrete coupling beams ranged from 1.48 to 3.47% in accordance with the reinforcement layouts of the beams. Therefore, this study found that the performance of conventionally reinforced concrete coupling beams with an aspect ratio of 1.68 can be controlled through the implementation of reinforcement details that include U-type reinforcement and the anchorage of intermediate horizontal bars.

Vol.23 No.2

Reinforcement learning (RL) is widely applied to various engineering fields. Especially, RL has shown successful performance for control problems, such as vehicles, robotics, and active structural control system. However, little research on application of RL to optimal structural design has conducted to date. In this study, the possibility of application of RL to structural design of reinforced concrete (RC) beam was investigated. The example of RC beam structural design problem introduced in previous study was used for comparative study. Deep q-network (DQN) is a famous RL algorithm presenting good performance in the discrete action space and thus it was used in this study. The action of DQN agent is required to represent design variables of RC beam. However, the number of design variables of RC beam is too many to represent by the action of conventional DQN. To solve this problem, multi-agent DQN was used in this study. For more effective reinforcement learning process, DDQN (Double Q-Learning) that is an advanced version of a conventional DQN was employed. The multi-agent of DDQN was trained for optimal structural design of RC beam to satisfy American Concrete Institute (318) without any hand-labeled dataset. Five agents of DDQN provides actions for beam with, beam depth, main rebar size, number of main rebar, and shear stirrup size, respectively. Five agents of DDQN were trained for 10,000 episodes and the performance of the multi-agent of DDQN was evaluated with 100 test design cases. This study shows that the multi-agent DDQN algorithm can provide successfully structural design results of RC beam.

Designing of the Low Energy Beam Lines with Achromatic Condition in the RAON Accelerator

2017 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.70 No.1

The RAON accelerator has been built to create and accelerate stable heavy-ion beams and rare isotope beams. The stable heavy-ion beams are generated by the superconducting electron cyclotron resonance ion source and accelerated by the low energy superconducting linac SCL1. The beams accelerated by the SCL1 are re-accelerated by the high energy superconducting linac SCL2 for the generation of rare isotope beams by using the in-flight fragmentation system or are put to use in the low energy experimental halls, which include the neutron science facility and the KOrea Broad acceptance Recoil spectrometer and Apparatus after having passed through the low energy beam lines which have long deflecting sections. At the end of each beam line in the low energy experimental halls, the beams should meet the targets of the two facilities with the specific requirements satisfied. Namely, if the beam is to be sent safely and accurately to the targets and simultaneously, satisfy the requirements, an achromatic lattice design needs to be applied in each beam line. In this paper, we will present the lattice design of the low energy beam lines and describe the results of the beam dynamics simulations. In addition, the correction of the beam orbit, which is distorted by machine imperfections, will be discussed.

Minimum deformability design of high-strength concrete beams in non-seismic regions

J.C.M. Ho,K.J.H. 2011 Computers and Concrete, An International Journal Vol.8 No.4

In the design of reinforced concrete (RC) beams, apart from providing adequate strength, it is also necessary to provide a minimum deformability even for beams not located in seismic regions. In most RC design codes, this is achieved by restricting the maximum tension steel ratio or neutral axis depth. However, this empirical deemed-to-satisfy method, which was developed based on beams made of normal-strength concrete (NSC) and normal-strength steel (NSS), would not provide a consistent deformability to beams made of high-strength concrete (HSC) and/or high-strength steel (HSS). More critically, HSC beams would have much lower deformability than that provided previously to NSC beams. To ensure that a consistent deformability is provided to all RC beams, it is proposed herein to set an absolute minimum rotation capacity to all RC beams in the design. Based on this requirement, the respective maximum limits of tension steel ratio and neutral axis depth for different concrete and steel yield strengths are derived based on a formula developed by the authors. Finally for incorporation into design codes, simplified guidelines for designing RC beams having the proposed minimum deformability are developed.

Lattice Design and Beam Dynamics Simulation for the Simultaneous Operation of Stable Ion Beam and Rare Isotope Beam in the RAON Accelerator

2017 THE JOURNAL OF THE KOREAN PHYSICAL SOCIETY Vol.71 No.11

The Rare Isotope Accelerator of Newness (RAON) accelerator is under construction to generate and accelerate the stable ion beams and the rare isotope beams for various kinds of experiment programs. Especially, the post accelerator section was designed to be able to separately accelerate and transport the stable ion beams created by the superconducting electron cyclotron resonance ion source (ECR-IS) and the rare isotope beams created by the Isotope Separation On-Line (ISOL) system. However, recently, the research of the simultaneous operation of the stable ion beams and the rare isotope beams has been conducted to more efficiently satisfy the a wide range of beam requirements of the experimental halls. For the operation, we has modified the lattice of the post low energy beam transport (LEBT) section for the injection of the rare isotope beam and the next lattice after the low energy superconducting linac (SCL3) section for the extraction of the accelerated beam in the post accelerator section of the RAON accelerator. In this paper, the new lattice designs of the injection and extraction parts will be presented and we will describe the results of the beam dynamics simulations for the simultaneous operation of the two kinds of beams.

Vol.08 No.06

The cross-sections of continuous multi-span beams sometimes suddenly increase, or become stepped, at the interior supports of continuous beams to resist high negative moments. The three-dimensional finite-element program ABAQUS (2007) was used to analytically investigate the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling behavior of stepped beams subjected to linear moment gradient and resulted in the development of design equations. The ratios of the flange thickness, flange width, and stepped length of beam are considered for the analytical parameters. Two groups of 27 cases and 36 cases, respectively, were analyzed for doubly and singly stepped beams in the inelastic buckling range. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometrical imperfection on inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beams are considered. First, the distributions of residual stress of the cross-section is same as shown in Pi and Trahair (1995), and the initial geometric imperfection of the beam is set by central displacement equal to 0.1% of the unbraced length of beam. The new proposed equations definitely improve current design methods for the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling problem and increase efficiency in building and bridge design.

Ji-Min,Park. Vol.9 No.4

This paper investigates inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of stepped beams subjected to uniformly distributed load and end moments. A three-dimensional finite-element program ABAQUS (2007) and a regression program MINITAB(2006) were used to analytically develop new design equation for singly and doubly stepped beams with simple boundary condition. The flanges of the smaller cross-section in the stepped beams were fixed at 30.48 by 2.54 cm, whereas the width and thickness of the flanges of the larger cross-section varied. The web thickness and height of the beams were kept at 1.65 cm and 88.9 cm, respectively. The ratios of the flange thickness, flange width, and stepped length of beam are considered with analytical parameters. Two groups of 27 cases and 36 cases, respectively, were analyzed for doubly and singly stepped beams in the inelastic buckling range. The combined effects of residual stresses and geometrical imperfection on inelastic lateral-torsional buckling of beams are considered. The distributions of residual stress of the cross-section is same as shown in Pi and Trahair (1995) and the initial geometric imperfection of the beam is set by central displacement equal to 0.1% of the unbraced length of beam. The comparisons between results from proposed equations and the results from finite element analyses were presented in this paper. The maximum differences of two results are of 13% for the doubly stepped beam and 10% for the singly stepped beam. The proposed equations definitely improve current design methods for the inelastic lateral-torsional buckling problem and increase efficiency in building and bridge design.

Design Aids for a Reinforced Concrete Beam with the Minimum Cost Concept

Park, Dalsoo,Ahn, Jeehyun,Lee, Chadon Architectural Institute of Korea 1999 Architectural research Vol.1 No.1

In reinforced concrete design, structural member sizes and amount of reinforcing steel areas are usually selected based on the structural designers' experience. Most existing charts provided for the design of reinforced concrete structural members were developed mainly based on force equilibrium conditions and some serviceability criteria. Sections selected from these charts may not result in an economic solution in terms of material costs as well as construction costs. Practical design aids are developed and suggested in this study for the economical design of reinforced concrete beam under flexural loading. With the beam width fixed, the depth of a beam, positive steel areas and negative steel areas are found from Khun-Tucker necessary conditions with Lagrangian multipliers to minimize the sectional cost of a beam. The developed design aids might be useful in selecting optimum reinforced concrete beam sections. Theoretical derivations and use of the developed design aids are described in this paper.
