This study was focused on applying a new paper coating binder, vinyl acetate-ethylene(VAE) emulsion,with SB-latex and acrylic emulsion for paper coating application. VAE emulsion has a low monomer cost and is non-toxic chemical than conventional adhesive for paper coating such as styrene-butadiene latex(SB-latex) and acrylic emulsion. We conducted double coating in order to test VAE emulsion, which was applied on top surface only. The results showed that optical properties of the coated paper with VAE were similar with the SB-latex binders. In case of bonding strength, dry-pick of the coated paper with VAE showed almost same with other binders while wet-pick of the coated paper with VAE had a little bit lower strength than that with SB-latex.

Zeolites and precipitated calcium carbonate (PCC) were applied together with a vinyl ace- tate ethylene (VAE) emulsion to identify an alternative pigment for silica to improve run- nability and develop the application technology for the VAE emulsion. The low shear and high shear viscosity of the coating color were decreased when zeolites were mixed with PCC. The coating color exhibited lower shear and higher shear viscosity when the emul- sion contained VAE than when it containing poly(vinyl) alcohol. Silica with a large spe- cific surface area and pore volume exhibited a small surface contact angle, and the coat- ing color also showed a smaller contact angle with zeolites having a porous structure than with PCC. Silica with a large specific surface area and pore volume showed high print density. For each type of pigment, the print density of coated paper was higher when us- ing zeolites than when using PCC. When the VAE emulsion binder was applied, the ink density decreased.

최근 유가가 지속적으로 상승하면서 고가의 석유화학물질을 대체할 보다 저렴하고 친환경적인 도공용 바인더에 대한 관심이 증대되면서 Vinyl Acetate Ethylene(VAE)의 적용에 대한 관심 또한 증대되고 있다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 종이 도공에서 사용되는 바인더를 Vinyl Acetate Ethylene(VAE)로 대체하고, 프리코팅층의 안료배합이 도공지 물성에 미치는 영향을 분석, 인쇄적성 평가를 실시하여 SB 라텍스를 Vinyl Acetate Ethylene(VAE)로의 대체 가능성과 그에 따른 원가절감 가능성을 평가하였다. 본 연구를 통해 도공지의 물성, 광학적 특성면에서는 기존의 SB latex와 VAE emulsion과 비교하면 비슷한 수준의 결과를 얻을 수 있었고, Pre층의 안료배합이 도공지의 광학적 성질에 영향을 미치는 것을 관찰하였다. <sup>**</sup>본 연구는 2017년도 정부(교육부)의 재원으로 한국연구재단의 지원을 받아 수행된 기초연구사업임(No. 2017R1D1A3B03034031).

This study was focused on effective use of the vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) emulsion when it was formulated with SB-latex as a new coating binder for paper coating application. Two kinds of SB-latex having a difference in their particle size were used as comparative binders in the formulation of the pre and top side coating respectively, since the SB-latex binders were conventionally used in paper coating. In order to investigate their possibility as new binder in each formulation of the pre and top side coating, two kinds of VAE emulsion binders were tested with each of addition level 10, 20, 30, and 100 wt%. VAE emulsion binder showed a similar result of the optical properties of coated paper, when it compared with SB-latex binder. It was out that in case of the ink setoff, the coated paper with VAE emulsion binder was a better result than the coated paper with SB-latex binder. It was believed that in case of pick strength, VAE emulsion binder could be only used in the pre coating formulation replaced SB-latex, when SB-latex was mainly used in the formulation of the top side coating with addition amount of the binder ranged from 90 to 100 wt%.

The study aim was to evaluate the effect of mixing of a water-soluble polymer, poly (vinyl alcohol) (PVA), and an emulsion binder, vinyl acetate ethylene (VAE), on the properties of the coating color and to identify the factors affecting the design of the coating color for- mulation for inkjet paper. The test compositions of the coating color used PVA and VAE emulsion binders of different molecular weights, and the properties of the prepared coat- ing color and coated paper were analyzed. As the mixing ratio of the VAE emulsion to PVA increased, the viscosity of the coating solution decreased, but when the mixing ratio was constant, the coating color using low-molecular weight PVA had low viscosity. As the VAE emulsion mixing ratio and PVA molecular weight increased, the contact angle of the coated papers increased, but the ink density of the coated paper decreased.

This study was carried out to compare three types of VAE emulsion and one type of SB latex to replace SB latex for pre-coating layer which is mainly used as a binder for paper coating. When the binder of the pre-coating layer was replaced with VAE emulsion, the roughness of the surface of the coated paper was somewhat higher than that of the SB-Latex binder, and the paper gloss was decreased slightly. In the case of optical properties such as brightness, whiteness and opacity, there was little difference. The ink setoff, which is one of the printability evaluation means, showed better results than the SB latex by applying VAE emulsion to the pre-coating layer, and the dry pick and wet pick strength were similar or slightly lower than those of SB latex. It was concluded that there was no serious problem in replacing the SB latex with VAE emulsion for pre-coating layer.
도공액의 유동성 및 표면물성 개선에 관한 연구(제3보)

In this study, four kinds of synthetic binders such as SB latex, acrylic binder, vinyl acetate-ethylene (VAE) emulsion copolymer, and eco binder were applied to pre-coating formulation in order to evaluate the influence of the addition ratio of each binder on the properties of coated boards. Five kinds of the SB latex (7 pph) based pre-coating formulations with other synthetic binders (2 pph or 4 pph) were prepared to evaluate their rheological properties of coating colors and properties of coated board. For top-coating, SB latex (12 pph) was only used for the coating formulation in all case. It was shown that high shear viscosity of the pre-coating colors was improved in comparison with that of other coating colors when VAE emulsion binder was applied on the SB latex based pre-coating formulation. In case of printability such as ink set-off and ink trapping, the coated board with eco binder was superior to those of the other coated boards. However, two kinds of SB latex-A and -B used in coating formulation with acrylic and VAE emulsion binder (2 pph) exhibited excellent wet-pick strength of coated board among coating formulations.
