        TENSILE BOND STRENGTH BETWEEN ELASTOMERIC IMPRESSION MATERIALS AND TRAY RESINS DEPENDING ON THE THICKNESS OF THE TRAY ADHESIVE

        Statement of problem. Elastomeric impression materials have been widely used to obtain an accurate impression. However there have not been enough studies on the influence of the thickness of the tray adhesives on the bonding strength between the trays and the elastomeric impression materials. Purpose. In order to understand the relationship between the thickness of the tray adhesive and the tensile bond strength and to suggest the thickness at which the bonding strength is strongest, tensile bond strength related to the thickness of adhesives of 3 different elastomeric impression materials were tested. Materials and methods. 3 impression materials, $Permlastic^{(R)}$. Regular Set(Kerr Corp., Romulus, Michigan, U.S.A.), $Impregum^{TM}$ $Penta^{TM}$(3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany), and Aquasil Ultra Monophase Regular Set Smart Wetting.(Dentsply Caulk, Milford, Delaware, U.S.A.), were used in this study, and tray adhesives from the same manufacturers of the impression materials were used, which were Rubber Base Adhesive, Polyether Adhesive, and Silfix, respectively. The tray specimens were prepared by autopolymerizing the tray material(Instant Tray Mix, Lang, Wheeling, Illinois, U.S.A.), and a PVC pipe was used to house the impression material. In group A, tray adhesives were applied in multiple thin layers of 1 to 5 and in group B, adhesives were applied only once, in the thickness equivalent to several applications. Lightness($L^*$) of the adhesion surface was measured with a spectrophotometer(CM-3500d, Konica Minolta, Sakai, Osaka, Japan). The tensile bond strength of the elastomeric impression material and the tray resin was measured with universal materials testing machines(Instron, Model 3366, Instron Corp, Nowood, Massachusetts, U.S.A.). A formula between the number of adhesive application layers and the lightness of the adhesion surface was deduced in group A, and the number of adhesive layers in group B was estimated by applying the lightness($L^*$) to the deduced formula. Results. 1. In group A, a statistically significant increase in tensile bond strength appeared when the number of application layers increased from 1 to 2 and from 4 to 5, and no significant difference was present between 2, 3, and 4 layers in Permlastic. In Impregum, the tensile bond strength was significantly increased when the number of adhesive layers increased from 1 to 3, but no significant difference after 3 layers. In Aquasil, the tensile bond strength significantly increased as the number of application layers increased up to 4 but showed no significant difference between 4 and 5. 2. In group B, the tensile bond strength was decreased when the thickness of the adhesive increased in Permlastic. Impregum showed an increased tensile bond strength when the thickness of the adhesive was increased. In Aquasil, the tensile bond strength increased as the number of adhesive application layers increased up to approximately 2.5 layers but it sharply decreased after approximately 4.5. Conclusion. From the study, the common idea that it is better to apply a thin and single coat of tray adhesive needs correction in more detailed ways, and instructions on some of the tray adhesives should be reconsidered since there were several cases in which the tensile bond strength increased according to the increase in the thickness of the adhesives.

        Drying time of tray adhesive for adequate tensile bond strength between polyvinylsiloxane impression and tray resin material

        STATEMENT OF PROBLEM. Use of custom tray and tray adhesive is clinically recommended for elastomeric impression material. However there is not clear mention of drying time of tray adhesive in achieving appropriate bonding strength of tray material and impression material. PURPOSE. This study is to investigate an appropriate drying time of tray adhesives by evaluating tensile bonding strength between two types of polyvinylsiloxane impression materials and resin tray, according to various drying time intervals of tray adhesives, and with different manufacturing company combination of impression material and tray adhesive. MATERIAL AND METHODS. Adhesives used in this study were Silfix (Dentsply Caulk, Milford, Del, USA) and VPS Tray Adhesive (3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany) and impression materials were Aquasil Ultra (monophase regular set, Dentsply Caulk, Milford, Del, USA) and Imprint Ⅱ Gai-ant (regular body, 3M ESPE, Seefeld, Germany). They were used combinations from the same manufacture and exchanged combinations of the two. The drying time was designed to air dry, 5 minutes, 10 minutes, 15 minutes, 20 minutes, and 25 minutes. Total 240 of test specimens were prepared by auto-polymerizing tray material(Instant Tray Mix, Lang, Wheeling, Ⅱ, USA) with 10 specimens in each group. The specimens were placed in the Universal Testing machine(Instron, model 3366, Instron Corp, University avenue, Nowood, MA, USA) to perform the tensile test (cross head speed 5 mm/min). The statistically efficient drying time was evaluated through ANOVA and Scheffe test. All the tests were performed at 95% confidence level. RESULTS. The results revealed that at least 10 minutes is needed for Silfix-Aquasil, and 15 minutes for VPS Tray Adhesive-lmprint Ⅱ, to attain an appropriate tensile bonding strength. VPS Tray Adhesive-lmprint II had a superior tensile bonding strength when compared to Silfix-Aquasil over 15 minutes. Silfix-Aquasil had a superior bonding strength to VPS Tray Adhesive-Aquasil, and VPS Tray Adhesive-lmprint Ⅱ had a superior tensile bonding strength to Silfix-lmprint Ⅱ at all drying periods. CONCLUSION. Significant increase in tensile bonding strength with Silfix-Aquasil and VPS Tray adhesive-Imprint Ⅱ combination until 10 and 15 minutes respectively. Tray adhesive-impression material combination from the same company presented higher tensile bonding strength at all drying time intervals than when using tray adhesive-impression material of different manufactures.

        도로포장 형식별 부착식 도로표지병의 성능 평가 연구

        PURPOSES: The objective of this study is to evaluate the shear and tensile strength properties of adhesive road studs in asphalt and concrete pavements. METHODS: The 300 mm×300 mm×50 mm rectangular specimens were fabricated using asphalt and concrete mixture for installation of road studs. Four 140-mm-radius circular areas were milled on each specimen with depth of 5 mm to install the adhesive road studs. About 100 g of thermal melting adhesive was applied on the milled area, and then the road stud was bonded onto the surface of the asphalt and concrete mixture. Direct shear testing was conducted at a speed of 5 mm/min on the interface between road stud and asphalt and concrete materials. Tensile strength testing was also conducted on the prepared specimens by applying load with increase of 50 kPa per second. These tests were performed not only in dry condition but also in wet condition to determine the effect of moisture on the shear and tensile strengths. RESULTS : According to the shear testing results, the average shear strength of asphalt samples in dry and wet conditions are 0.509 and 0.234 MPa, respectively. From this testing, the shear strength of wet sample was found to be decreased by 50% with respect to that of the dry sample. Similar trends can be observed on the concrete samples. The average tensile strength of asphalt samples was 0.187 MPa at 1.5 mm of displacement in dry condition. The concrete sample has a 0.222 MPa average tensile strength, which is slightly higher than that of the asphalt sample because of the rough surface characteristics of the concrete sample. CONCLUSIONS: It is determined from this study that the shear and tensile strengths of road stud bonded on the surface of asphalt mixture are slightly lower than those on concrete samples. Regardless of the pavement type, the wet conditioning of the sample can decrease the shear and tensile strength by 50% those of the dry sample. In the future, the quality improvement of adhesive and increase of specific surface area should be considered to improve the bonding property between road stud and pavement surface.

        단일겹침 접착제 접합부의 응력분포와 강도평가

        Recently, adhesive-bonding technique is wifely used in manufacturing structures. Stress and strain analysis of joints are essential to design adhesive-bonded joints structure. The single-lap adhesive joint is the design dominating the range of adhesive joints. In this study, single-lap specimens with different joint dimensions were used for the tensile-shear test and finite element calculation in of order to investigate the effect of overlap length and adhesive-bonding thickness on adhesive strength and stress distribution of the joints. Consequently, it was found that overlap lap size and thickness can be important parameters of structure joints using adhesive bonding, which is effected on adhesive strength.

        Development of single cantilever beam method to measure the adhesion of thin film adhesive on silicon chip

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>A method to measure the tensile adhesion of thin films on a silicon chip was developed. A new test machine was designed to obtain tensile adhesion by applying a single cantilever beam method. Self-alignment of the specimen was accomplished by a specially designed jig and mount. The specimen was designed to allow fabrication by using a commercial manufacturing process. The developed method was applied to measure the adhesion of die attach films having various thicknesses ranging from 5μm to 20μm. Adhesion between the film adhesive and the top surface of a silicon chip was successfully measured. It was shown that the measured adhesion was independent of crack length and robust against variation of the initial alignment of specimen.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> The SCB was successfully modified to measure the adhesion of film adhesive. </LI> <LI> The specimen was designed without attachment of any adherend. </LI> <LI> Delamination was obtained without pre crack. </LI> <LI> The jig equipped with a seesaw was designed to achieve self-alignment. </LI> <LI> Developed method could measure the adhesion consistently and accurately. </LI> </UL> </P>

        This paper investigates the effect of strain-rate on characteristics of structural adhesive. In order to get an accuracy result from crash simulation, we should have to consider the strain-rate hardening effect of adhesive joint, because it affects the crash energy absorption. Dynamic tensile characteristics of structural adhesive with various strain-rate are needed to apply this effect to crash analysis. Uniaxial tensile tests were carried out for structural adhesive from Henkel at the strain-rate ranged from 0.001/sec to 10/sec to measure the tensile properties; Young’s modulus, tensile strength, fracture strain. Strain was measured by digital image correlation technique. Based on the experimental data, Young’ modulus and tensile strength showed increasing tendency with increasing strain-rate, however fracture strain was slightly decreased with increasing strain-rate.

        All-in-one adhesive의 다층적용이 미세인장결합강도에 미치는 영향

        The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of multiple application of all-in-one dentin adhesive system on microtensile bond strength using confocal laser scanning microscope and microtensile bond strength test. Flat occlusal dentin surfaces were prepared using low-speed diamond saw. In group I, Scotchbond Multipurpose (SM) was applied by manufacturer's recommendation. In group II, after Adper Prompt L-Pop was applied for 15s and light cured for 10s. the second coat was re-applied and light-cured. In group III, after light-curing the second layer. the third coat was re-applied and light-cured. Specimens bonded with a resin-composite were sectioned into resin-dentin stick for measuring the adhesive layer thickness by confocal laser scanning microscope and evaluating micro-tensile bond strength. The adhesive layers of three-step dentin adhesive system. 3 coats of Adper Prompt L-Pop had significantly thicker than SM. 2 coats of Adper Prompt L-Pop (p < 0.05). However. there was no significant differences in bond strengths between SM and 3 coats of Adper Prompt L-Pop (p > 0.05). And SM. 3 coats of Adper Prompt L-Pop had significantly higher than 2 coats of Adper Prompt L-Pop in bond strengths (p < 0.05).

        랫드에서 고농도의 Carboxymethyl Chitosan이 복벽 유착 예방에 미치는 영향

        The objective of this study was to determine the effective concentration of carboxymethyl chitoaan(CMC) solution on preventing intraperitoneal adhesions. In this study, 60 rats were divided into four groups : an untreated control group and three experimental groups that were treated with 3 ml of 3, 5, and 7% CMC solution. Adhesions were induced by suturing both the ileal serosa and peritoneum scraped until petechial bleeding occurred. CMC solutions were instilled intraperitoneally immediately before closure of the peritoneomuscular layer. The tensile strength of formed adhesions was measured by using a computerized tensiometer. Histopathological changes of adhesions were evaluated by hematoxylin-eosin for light microscopic examination and Massons's trichrom staining for collagen fibers. All of CMC solutions reduced significantly the tensile strength of the adhesions. CMC inhibited the increase of inflammatory cell infiltration and damage of adhesion spot, and accelerated the collagen synthesis and neovascuiarization. No significant differences were observed among all of CMC concentration at inhibiting adhesion formation. Therefore, we could conclude that 3% CMC, the lowest concentration adopted in this study, was appropriate to prevent the formation of peritoneal adhesion.

        Polishing tiles among porcelain tiles are more durable and aesthetic than ceramic tiles, so their demand has recently increased. In particular, since polishing tiles have a very low absorption rate, organic adhesives with chemical bonds are mainly used. However, organic adhesives have low economic efficiency and some volatile organic compounds (TVOCs). Therefore purpose of this study was to evaluate the performance of polishing tile adhesion by developing organic-inorganic adhesives, which have chemical bonds and mechanical bonds. As a result, since the amorphous chain and chemical bonds of the polymer in the tile adhesives, both tensile and shear adhesion strength were satisfied with the KS L 1592, KS L 1593, and the rate of length change itself in the thermal cycling was lower than organic adhesives. So it is thought that it is possible to replace some organic adhesives.

        접착제 접합 이음부 접합강도 평가에 대한 실험적 연구

        In this study, the bonding strengths of adhesively bonded joints are experimentally investigated. A series of lap-shear tests are conducted using single lap type adhesive joints. In order to analyse the joint fabrication factors that affected the bonding strength, the parametric tests are conducted with various thickness of adhesive, surface roughness and fillet of adhesive. In addition, for the comparative study with the welded joint, lap-shear tests using specimens with 2 welded sides and 4 welded sides are also carried out. The quantitative results of the strength analysis are summarized, and some proposals are made on setting up testing standards for adhesively bonded joints.
