한국전쟁 정전협상 통역은 누가 했을까: 번역고고학을 이론적 배경으로 한 한국인 통역자 탐색

        최효은 한국번역학회 2023 번역학연구 Vol.24 No.1

It has been 70 years since the signing of Korean Armistice Agreement on July 27, 1953. A translation historian took on a quest to find Korean interpreters who participated in the Armistice Negotiations. Narrowing the research scope to those Korean interpreters who were reserved solely for communications with the negotiating counterparts, the historian charted a search route to primary sources. The explanatory note that the National Institute of Korean History presented to give basic understanding on the Proceedings of Korean Armistice Conferences functioned as a guide, so as to add Sul Chun Sik and To Yu Ho, North Korean interpreters, to the list of interpreters with a language combination of English and Korean. In the further investigation hinted by Kim (2015: 330), the names of K M Chung, Bill Yu, and Y P Kim were added. This finding inevitably demands rewriting of the explanatory note that is presented by the National Institute of Korean History.

        설정식의 생애와 문학 연구

        곽명숙(Kwak Myeungsuk) 한국현대문학회 2011 한국현대문학연구 Vol.0 No.33

This paper reconstructs some aspects of Sul Chungsik by correcting wrongly reputed facts over his life with verifiable references and analyzes his poetry with some clues which show his own vision. As a son of Enlightmented Confusian and a brother of upright journalist, he naturally became familiar with ideas of critical intellects and had diverse experience in china, japan, USA. Even though he participated with “the Korean Writers Federation"(Joseon-Munhakga-Dongmaeng) and chose to defect to North Korea, His literature shows somewhat different aspects from that of KAPF. It can be assumed that his participation is expression of his anger against his times or aspiration for salvation of Korean people. He served both a official of US military government and a journalist. This peculiar position makes his remarks or behaviors as a kind of spokesman of the organization noticeable. But we should consider that those were done after defection of key members of the Korean Writers Federation and Joseon Communist party. He exposed unparalleled critical attitude and poetic appearance in three books which were publicized during 3 years of Liberation periods. It is known that at the bottom of the unusual character of his poem lies refined knowledge of English Literature. This paper confirms this and suggests that his peculiar ‘Prophetic voice’ is related with Afro-American Literature which it is assumed to be translated by him. After he could not continue left-wing literature movement for establishments of separated governments, he has to consume literature desire by writing books under a false name or absorbing himself with translating. This failure of the intellect writer with critical power and literary ability by turbulence of the War and Separation also shows the misfortune of Korean modern literature. In this paper the focus was put on historical facts of his life. Discussion over the character of his text will be taken in next paper.
