        Factors Affecting the Application of Strategy Management Accounting in Vietnamese Logistics Enterprises

        Purpose This research aims to investigate factors affecting the application of strategic management accounting in Vietnamese Logistics Enterprises. Design/Methodology/ Approach: Quantitative research was conducted and data was collected by sending questionnaires to 188 accountants and directors from Vietnamese Logistics Enterprises (including, transportation, warehousing and forwarding). 5 factors (namely: size and organizational structure, technological advancement, and strategic management accounting implementing costs) were selected to measure the application of strategic management accounting (SMA) in Vietnamese Logistics Enterprises (LEs) through correlation and regression analysis. Results: The empirical findings show that there exists a significant association between these factors and the SMA application. LEs have strongly supported the application of SMA as a tool to provide information for making their strategic decisions. The factors including size and organizational structure, technological advancement, SMA implementing c osts, and strategy positively impact the SMA application in both financial and non-financial aspects. This finding helps the adm inistrators realize the importance of SMA. Conclusions: This study provided an overview of SMA application and its benefits to enterprises. It helps managers have a better understanding of SMA and future directions for application. Moreover, the research results will be useful for managers to identify factors influencing their SMA practices and improve the current management process applied in organizations.

        Korea has shown a tremendous leap in economic development in a short span of time, and the world is watching Korea’s economy with keen interest. Development of industries that are implementing information systems (IS) has played a role in leading economic growth in Korea. Because of the success of Korean firms, the creation of case studies for implementing IS in Korean firms was attempted. Despite the many case studies, analysis of the motivations and results, for implementing IS as a firm’s strategic purpose, was rarely conducted. Therefore, this paper investigates some Korean firms’ cases studies in order to show the best practice example of implementing and adopting IS strategically. Nine cases of Korean firms’ strategic use of IS were analyzed in various industry fields. Each case consists of the following four categories: company overview, background implementing IS, adoption of IS for strategic purpose, and the results of implementing IS. In order to help various companies to take an action with their IS implementation and its strategic use, implications from the cases are summarized to show how Korean firms strategically introduced IS for solving particular problems that they had faced.

        The Interaction Effect of Strategic Information Systems on Performance of International Freight Forwarders: An Analysis of Gaps in Performance

        This study will verify the direct effect of strategic application of information systems (IS) on firm performance of international freight forwarders through ascertaining three research objectives: the analyses of a causal link between IS and firm performance, an interaction effect between internal and external IS on firm performance, and gaps in firm performance among the stages of strategic application of IS. The data was collected from international freight forwarders. To achieve the objectives of this study, various analytical methods were used. The results of exploratory and confirmatory factor analyses are the basis of reliability and validity on the collected data. The results of structural equation modeling (SEM), moderated regression analysis (MRA), cluster analysis, analysis of variance (ANOVA) and post hoc analysis are the basis of testing the hypotheses. The results are as follows. First, strategic application of IS has a positive effect on firm performance. This means that international freight forwarders improve performance through strategic application of IS. Second, there is the interaction effect between internal and external IS on financial performance. This means that strategic application of internal and external IS is connected with financial performance. For this reason, there is a gap between IS investment and financial performance in the industry. However, the interaction has no effect on customer satisfaction. The reason is explained as passing over organizational and cultural factors which have an effect on the relationship between firms. Third, there are gaps in firm performance among the stages of strategic application of IS. The result shows that the stage of supply chain IS achieve the highest firm performance. The results mean that strategic application of IS has a direct influence on firm performance.

        The Effect of the Fit between Perceived Environmental Uncertainty and Strategic Applications of Information Systems on the Firm’s Performance

        [Purpose]This study empirically investigated the fit relationships among perceived environmental uncertainty(PEUN), strategic applications levels of information systems(IS), and facilitators of IS strategic alignment. We also examined the differences in organizational performance according to the degrees of fit. We demonstrate the appropriate levels or degrees of the strategic applications of IS and the conditions of alignment facilitators under the high or low states of PEUN. [Methodology]For the study, 105 sample firms’ data were collected form Korean manufacturing firms listed on the stock market. Cluster analysis was employed as the main analytical tool. [Findings]According to the results of this study, PEUN has an indirect relationships with the strategic applications level of IS through the facilitators of alignment. The results showed that under uncertain environment, the high level of strategic applications with the well-arranged facilitators of alignment can contribute more to the improvement of performance than in the less uncertain or stable environment. Therefore, the benefits of the high level of strategic applications can be realized in the competitive and uncertain environment. The empirical results also suggested that the high levels of strategic applications of IS is combined with the high degrees of the facilitators of IS strategic alignment. [Implications]The results of this study present that the competitive advantages of the strategic IS applications are realized under the uncertain and competitive environments. However, though the environment is stable(low PEUN), the excessively low level of strategic applications may decrease the firm’s performance. Accordingly, a firm must recognize the states of external environments, and develop and obtain the appropriate degrees of the strategic applications of IS.

        지식 자원은 기업의 중요한 자산들 중의 하나이므로 관리회계 학자들은 지식경영 활동들의 활성화를 위해 경영(회계)통제시스템이 어떤 역할을 할 수 있는지 연구하여 왔다. 본 연구는 경영통제 시스템의 구성 요소인 전략적 성과평가 시스템이 어떤 경로를 거쳐서 기업의 지식경영에 영향을 미치고, 나아가, 기업성과 개선에 기여하게 되는지를 밝힌 연구이다. 지식 자원의 개발 및 활용 전략인 지식경영 전략은 경영 전략과 연계되어 수립, 실행되어야 한다. 경영 전략과 하위 운영전략인 지식경영 전략의 연계는 기업 전략 목표의 달성, 경영 전략의 구현을 위해 필수적인 것이다. 본 연구에서는 전략적 성과평가 시스템의 지식경영 전략적 연계에 대한 영향이 검증되었다. 실증분석 결과, 전략적 성과평가 시스템이 조직학습에 영향을 미치고 그러한 영향이 지식경영 전략적 연계에 미치게 된다는 것이 확인되었다. 그리고 지식경영 전략적 연계는 지식 자원의 경쟁적 활용과 기업성과에 긍정적인 영향을 미치는 것으로 나타났다. 경영 전략에 연계된 지식경영 활동들로 인해 기업은 경쟁적 입지 강화에 도움이 되는 지식을 창출, 획득하게 되며, 이러한 지식의 활용은 기업성과 개선으로 연결된다는 것이다. Management accounting researchers have investigated the impact of management (accounting) control systems on the activation of knowledge management(KM) activities. This study also empirically examines the effects of strategic performance measurement systems(SPMS), which is a component of management control systems, on organizational learning and the strategic alignment of business strategy with KM strategy, which is the necessary condition to provide the kinds of knowledge required for the successful realization of business strategy. The results of this study shows that SPMS directly affects the organizational learning, with which the members of an organization acquire the types of knowledge about strategic goals or objectives and the ways attaining these goals, and indirectly influences the KM strategic alignment through organizational learning. Thus, the alignment between business strategy and KM strategy can be facilitated and activated by the adoption and implementation of SPMS. According to the results of this study, it is observed that the KM strategic alignment positively affects the competitive applications of various kinds of knowledge owned by a firm, and finally, improves the performance of an organization. From these results, it is concluded that the types of knowledge created and acquired through the KM strategic alignment can be utilized to enhance the strategic position of a firm, and the intensified competitiveness of a firm can lead to the improvement of performance.

        The Relationships among Strategic Performance Measurement Systems, IS Strategic Alignment, and IT Infrastructure for Knowledge Management

        Investigating how to develop information technology (IT) infrastructure that can effectively facilitate knowledge management (KM) activities has been an important research area. To contribute to the theoretical and practical developments in this research area, this study empirically examined the causal relationships among the use of strate-gic performance measurement systems (SPMS), organizational learning, information systems (IS) strategic align-ment, IT infrastructure for KM, competitive applications of knowledge resources, and organizational performance. Through structured questionnaires, empirical data were collected from 117 Korean manufacturing firms that are listed on the Korean stock market. To analyze the empirical data, regression analyses were employed. The results of this study showed that SPMS significantly and positively influences organizational learning and IS strategic alignment. The strategic communications and dialogues between members of an organization, which are provided by SPMS, may enhance the degrees of IS strategic alignment. According to the results, it was found that both organizational learning and IS strategic alignment have significant and positive effects on the adoption of IT infra-structure for KM. Thus, the clear directions of IT development, which are formed through IS strategic alignment, seem to shape the goal orientations of members in a firm, and the organizational learning that is built with SPMS seems to enhance members collaborations in the construction of IT infrastructure. This study also showed that when the degrees of IS strategic alignment are high, the effects of IT infrastructure on the competitive applications of knowledge resources are partially greater than under the low levels of IS strategic alignment. Finally, it was observed that the competitive usage of knowledge asset has a positive impact on the performance of an organization.

        제조기업의 정보기술 투자와 기업 성과 간의 관계 연구: 전략적 활용 수준과 환경 불확실성에 따른 차이

        Purpose This study empirically investigates the impact of information technology(IT) investments on the financial and non-financial performance of a manufacturing firm. We examined the interaction effects of IT investments and strategic applications levels of information systems(IS). This study also demonstrated the three-way interaction effects of IT investments, levels of IS strategic applications, and perceived environmental uncertainty(PEU). Design/methodology/approach For this study, empirical data were collected from 98 manufacturing firms with the structured questionnaires. The data were analyzed with multiple regression models, and partial derivatives were utilized to identify the directions of the impact. Findings From the empirical results, it was found that when both the levels of IS strategic applications and the degrees of IT investments are high, the ratios of the costs of goods sold to total sales(RCGS) and the labor costs to total sales(RLCS) are decreased, as it were, the performance of a firm is improved. However, it was observed that when the levels of strategic IS are low, the high degrees of IT investments do not contribute to the improvement of a performance. The results showed that when the levels of strategic IS are high, the high degrees of IT investments incur the high RSAE not low RSAE. When PEU is considered, the empirical results showed that under the low degrees of PEU, the IT investments under high levels of strategic IS applications (strategic IT investments) improve the performance, as it were, low RCGS, and high degrees of perceived financial and non-financial performance. However, under high PEU, it was observed that high degrees of strategic IT investments do not increase the performance. When PEU is high, the strategic IT investments reduce RSAE, and under low PEU, RSAE is increased.
