Original Article : Dietary Protein Requirement for Young Far Eastern Catfish Silurus asotus

( Kyoung Duck Kim ),( Kang Woong Kim ),( Bong Joo Lee ),( Maeng Hyun Son ),( Hyon Sob Han ),( Jin Do Kim ) 한국수산과학회(구 한국수산학회) 2014 Fisheries and Aquatic Sciences Vol.17 No.4

A feeding trial was conducted to determine the optimum dietary protein requirement of young far eastern catfish Silurus asotus. Five isocaloric diets were formulated to contain graded levels of protein (35, 40, 45, 50, and 55%). Triplicate groups of fish (initial body weight of 44 g) were hand-fed to apparent satiation for 9-weeks. Weight gain and specific growth rate of fish fed 55% protein diet were significantly higher than those of fish fed 35 and 40% protein diets, but not significantly different from those of fish fed 45 and 50% protein diets. The feed efficiency of fish fed 50 and 55% protein diets was significantly higher than that of fish fed 35, 40 and 45% protein diets. The protein efficiency ratio of fish fed 40% protein diet was significantly higher than that of fish fed 45, 50 and 55% protein diets, but not significantly different from that of fish fed 35% protein diet. The dietary protein level significantly affected whole body lipid and moisture contents. The results of this study suggest that the 45% protein in the diet is optimal for maximum growth of young far eastern catfish weighing in the range of 44 to 227 g.

기아에 따른 양식 메기, Silurus asotus의 성장 및 생리적 반응

        이정열,허준욱,김선규 한국어류학회 2008 韓國魚類學會誌 Vol.20 No.2

An experiment was conducted for 80 days to determine the effect of feeding andstarvation on the survival, growth, gonad-somatic index (GSI), hepato-somatic index (HSI), visceraindex (LSI), the morphometric changes and hematological parameter in a cultured catfish, Silurusasotus. The survival and growth of the starved group was lower than those of the fed group during theexperiment. Starvation resulted in retardation of growth, which provides examples of the reduction offinal body weight, growth rate of body weight, specific growth rate and condition factor, whereas thefed group continued to grow and remained in good condition. Blood analysis (cortisol, glucose, aspartate aminotransferase, alanine aminotransferase, red blood cell and hemoglobin) showedsignificant differences between the fed and starved groups at the end of the experiment. Theseresults suggest that all nutritional parameters used for starvation and feeding in this study appear tobe a useful index of nutritional status in the cultured catfish.

Determination of the Temperature-Dependent Index of Mitotic Interval (${\tau}_o$) for Chromosome Manipulation in Far Eastern Catfish Silurus asotus

        박인석,임재현,Park, In-Seok,Im, Jae-Hyun 한국어류학회 2001 韓國魚類學會誌 Vol.13 No.1

Temperature-related cleavage rates and mitotic intervals (${\tau}_o$) in the far eastern catfish Silurus asotus were studied by averaging the duration of the second and third embryonic divisions to establish effective procedures for chromosome manipulations. At higher temperatures eggs developed faster and underwent more asynchronous development. Mitotic intervals for far eastern catfish were $21.5{\pm}1.4$ min at $22^{\circ}C$, $18.5{\pm}1.2$ min at $24^{\circ}C$, and $14.0{\pm}2.1$ min at $26^{\circ}C$. There was a strong negative correlation between ${\tau}_o$ and water temperature (Y=-1.85X+21.9, $R^2=0.9868$, where Y is ${\tau}_o$ and X is temperature).

Vol.33 No.4

We are aim to evaluate lysozyme and antibacterial activity of cultured catfish, Silurus asotus, that fed supplementally with Galla rhois extracts for eight weeks. Lysozyme activity in the spleen and serum of administrated group was higher than not administrated group, but in mucus of the lysozyme activity was no regular than other organ. The lysozyme activity of the spleen, kidney, serum of administrated fishes were increased after 2 weeks and that was highest after 8 weeks. Ht and GLU in serum of administrated fishes were gradually increased but GOT was decreased after 8 weeks. There is no significant differences in HB (Hemoglobin) and TP (Total Protein) each groups. Furthermore, there is no pathohistological changes of kidney and liver of tested fishes. The cumulative survival rates of administrated group after intraperitoneal injection of Aeromonas veronii with 6.5×106 cfu mL-1 was presented 33% in 9 days. As the Results, Galla rhois extracts has any beneficial effects for immunity elevation and antibacterial activity in catfish, Silurus asotus.

Physiological Responses to Three Different Levels of Vibration Stress in Catfish, Silurus asotus

Jun Wook Hur,Dae Hee Kim,Jeong-Yeol Lee 응용생태공학회 2015 Ecology and resilient infrastructure Vol.2 No.4

The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of vibration on primary (e.g. plasma cortisol), secondary (e.g. plasma glucose, aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), Na+, K+ and Cl–) and tertiary (e.g. mortality) stress responses in cultured catfish, Silurus asotus. For this purpose, three groups (one control group and two stress groups) were set up. The control group was exposed to vibration corresponding to 48 decibel (dB) volt (V) (produced using electric vibrators) for 15 minutes per hour every day, and the two stress groups were exposed to vibrations corresponding to 58 and 68 dB (V) (produced using the same electric vibrators), equally, for 15 minutes per hour every day. Blood was sampled at day 0 (before starting vibration stress tests), and at days 1, 3, 5, 7, 9 and 11 (after starting vibration stress tests). According to the results, the catfish physiologically showed ""typical"" stress responses when they were exposed to chronic vibration. This indicates that such chronic vibration caused substantial stress to catfish; especially, persistently elevated plasma AST and ALT levels observed caused adverse effects to them. In conclusion, chronic vibration could significantly affect hematological characteristics in catfish.
