        수사구조이론과 한국어 텍스트 분석의 실제

        Rhetorical Structure Theory has been considered as a useful method for analyzing text structures since it was introduced for the first time in the 1980`s. This study is to examine how this Rhetorical Structure Theory could be used as a tool for Korean text analysis by describing the whole process of text analysis. In chapter 2, the previous researches on the text analysis based on the Rhetorical Structure Theory in Korea have been reviewed and it is concluded that the Rhetorical Structure Theory has been applied in the various fields of Korean linguistics. In chapter 3, the Rhetorical Structure Theory itself has been introduced as a descriptive theory for text analysis defining some key concepts such as ``spans, nucleus and satellite, relations, schemas`` and introducing the steps of the analysis according to the theory. In chapter 4, the entire process of Korean text analysis according to the framework of the Rhetorical Structure Theory is demonstrated. As the result of this analysis, it is noted that the Subject Matter Relations such as Elaboration and Circumstance are likely to occur more often than the Presentational Relations such as Background and Evidence due to the characteristics of the text function of the reported news stories. As the major function of the reported news stories is to give the readers the objective summary of the news event or accident, so that the text readers are urged only to understand the facts the text is dealing with but not to change their attitudes or behaviors.

        A Burkean Dramatistic Analysis of Tae-Joon Park’s Rhetoric: The Chairman and CEO of POSCO

        Objectives: This study analyzes the rhetoric of “Korea’s steel king,” Tae-Joon Park (TJ Park), the founder of POSCO (formerly Pohang Iron and Steel Company), with a specific focus on TJ Park’s rhetorical style and strategy, through a close reading of two speeches: his inaugural address at POSCO in 1968 and his speech commemorating the 10th anniversary of POSCO in 1978. Methods: This study applied the work of Kenneth Burke because of the impact of rhetorical analysis on the field of business communication studies. Burke’s approach includes the five qualities that comprise the pentad (scene, act, agent, agency, and purpose). Herein, these concepts are used to analyze TJ Park’s speeches, followed by an examination of how the Burkean notion of identification works in his addresses. Results: The present study demonstrated the basic rhetorical strategies in business communication that have influenced developments in research methodology based on Kenneth Burke’s concepts of the pentad and identification. Burke’s dramatistic method for the analysis of Park’s corporate rhetoric enabled an analysis of the relationship among features of Park’s rhetoric in terms of the business rhetorical situation. Conclusions: With his rhetoric, TJ Park set the scene to encourage employee motivation for the upper hierarchy of values, promoted employees’ future acts, changed the workers’ mentality, habits, and behaviors and turned them into “POSCO men,” shielded the management of POSCO from bureaucratic interference and unreasonable political pressure, and sublimated the corporate mission to a “national duty” and “historical mission.” His unique rhetoric contributed to the success of his management.

        Close Textual Analysis and the Design of Learning Spaces

        This paper is a close textual analysis of what learning is in the context of learning spaces. The aim is for critical rhetorical discourse to what scholars say or write about a topic and the deeper meaning of their words. The close textual analysis is about the influence of learning spaces to have significant experiences for the network generation born in an era of information technology. The paper is to introduce a reason to pay close attention to the process of textual analysis. The process with its complexity reveals the creative density of rhetoric as well as the reason behind the words. Our compass point toward understanding what learning truly means within the context of learning spaces. But this journey is no mere academic exercise; it is a call to engage in critical rhetorical discourse, where ink meets parchment, and ideas crystalize. This study reveals how symbolic action, form and content, context, and creative concentration function within the artifact. The claim is that proposition for close textual analysis is to prepare the listener to listen and hear the importance of rhetorical discourse is taking place, as well as understanding of words to gain meaning to rhetorical discourse and critical thinking.

      • Rhetoric Structure Theory and Text Analysis

        RST has been presented as a way to account for the functional potential of text, its capacity to achieve the purpose of speakers and produce effects in hearer. The principal assumptions that RST encodes in its methods have been identified. In the course of accounting for potential effects, this paper has also shown a way to distinguish coherent texts from incoherent ones and iden ed a few of the consequences of text structure. In some places of this paper, 'Rhetorical Structure Theory and Text Analysis' I find it stated that there is room for RST to be improved and complemented, especially in its mechanisms and the related techniques.

        <간폐비소(諫廢妃疏)>의 수사학적 분석

        The purpose of this study is to inquire into the persuasive method of a memorial to the throne through rhetorical analysis. <Kan-Pye-Bi-So> is the Sun-Hyo Son(孫舜孝)'s memorial to King Sungjong(成宗) which opposed deposal of a queen. A memorial to the throne which criticized the fault of a king and urged straightforward politics can be regarded as a kind of persuasion text as its goal is persuasion itself. Hence rhetorical analysis investigating persuasion technique can show characteristics of a genre more clearly. This study is focused on the way of persuasion in the memorial and its contribution to persuasion process. The results are classified into rational persuasion method and sensuous persuasion method. This study shows that <Kan-Pye-Bi-So> made use of sensuous persuasion which used periphrastic and polite expression, appealed to the king's emotion, and distinguished writer's good will and sincerity and rational persuasion which utilized historical cases and the teaching of the saints or the scripture.

        수사구조이론(RST)을 활용한 학습자 텍스트 분석의 문제점과 해결 방안

        The purpose of this study is to identify the practical problems of analyzing learner’s texts using Rhetorical Structure Theory(RST), and to discuss solutions to the problems through a case study. Eight annotator’s conducted RST analysis seminars and exercises for four weeks, after which their respective processes and results were described and summarized. One problem raised in the analysis of RST was that the recognition of nuclearity, spans, and relations varied according to the annotator's ability and subjectivity, Another problem is that relations tend to be determined by text hierarchy, and the distributions of relations (relations that primarily appeared, rarely appeared or did not appeared) are very different. As a solution to this problem, the annotator’s agreement of RST analysis could be improved through mutual consultation and training, and Theoretically, some disagreement regarding analysis results is allowed in the text analysis. and rhetorical levels are taken into consideration. Furthermore it is possible to adjust the RST categories for relations, and clarify them upon reflecting on the features of learner’s text.

        관광목적지 관점에서 인천시 도시브랜드의 수사학적 분석 -슬로건 분석을 중심으로-

        This study intended to set the direction for the development of a slogan for the city in the aspect of tourism destination. For the study, the framework of analysis was developed through literature reviews on the city brand, slogan, and rhetorical analysis technique in the aspect of tourism destination, and Incheon government and local authorities within Incheon were analyzed. Based on the result of analysis, this study indicated the need for a slogan which considers marketing and precise targeting and the need for the participation of experts from the planning stage of the slogan development. In addition, this study suggested the direction for slogan development such as the intensification of hierarchy and interrelatedness between tourism slogans of municipal, provincial, and local governments and the watchfulness against the political use of slogan development. This study holds significance for it introduced the concept of rhetorics as an analytic technique for the city``s slogan in the aspect of tourism destination and weighed the usefulness of the rhetorical concept in the tourism science.

        신문에서의 새로운 장르, ‘뉴스분석’

        This paper seeks to explore the linguistic and discoursal realizations as well as the hybrid/evolutionary nature, of ‘news analysis’, a new genre in Korean newspapers, within the framework of ‘genre analysis’ (Swales 1990; Ayers 2008) and ‘media discourse’ (van Dijk 1988; Bell 1991). On the discourse level, the present analysis examines 'headlines', 'layout', and 'discourse structure' of the new genre, and shows that it is composed of four main discourse categories (introducing topics, providing background, analyzing/diagnosing, and providing argumentation for the analysis/diagnosis). In addition, it demonstrates that the last two categories are further substantiated by more specific speech acts (such as 'interpreting' and 'predicting', etc.) and various rhetorical structures (including 'evidence' and 'elaboration', etc.), respectively. The genre turns out to have some linguistic characteristics as well, in terms of the uses of present/future tense, direct quotations, speech verbs, and textual and interactional metadiscourse markers. Based on the results, this paper suggests not only that 'news analysis' has a hybrid nature, revealing more similarities with 'editorials' rather than 'news reportage', but also that it is still undergoing further changes in 'layout', 'discourse structure' and 'expressing ideologies'. This article concludes with some discussion on the hybrid/evolutionary nature of the genre, drawing on some theoretical concepts including ‘genre chains’, ‘intertextuality’, ‘macro-argument structure’, and the possibility of manipulation.

        상호문화적 관점에서 본 한국어와 영어 학술 논문 서론의 장르 분석 연구

        최근의 상호문화적 수사 장르 분석 연구들은 문화의 역동적이고 복합적인 속성과 사회적 상황들을 설명하기 위해 이루어져왔다. 그러나 두 언어의 수사적 차이점을 고려하여 전문가들이 한국어와 영어로 쓴 학술 논문의 유사점과 차이점을 밝히기 위한 연구들은 거의 없었다. 따라서, 본 연구의 목적은 한국어와 영어의 수사적 차이점을 고려하여 전문가가 한국어로 쓴 학술 논문을 분석하기 위한 틀을 개발하고, 전문가가 한국어와 영어로 쓴 학술 논문에 수사 구조의 측면에서 어떤 차이가 나타나는지를 상호문화적 관점에서 알아보고자 한다. 먼저, 인터뷰와 이전 관련 연구들을 참고하여 전문가가 한국어로 쓴 학술 논문을 분석하기 위한 틀이 개발되었다. 또한 Swales의 무브 분석을 이용하여 전문가가 한국어와 영어로 쓴 학술 논문의 서론 각 100개가 분석되었다. 비교 결과, 두 그룹의 학술 논문의 수사 구조는 여러 가지 차이점과 상호문화적 측면들이 발견 되었다. 이 연구는 상호문화적 관점에서 전문가가 한국어로 쓴 학술 논문을 분석하기 위한 적절한 틀을 제공함으로써 장르기반 쓰기 교수에 기여할 것으로 기대된다. Recent intercultural rhetoric (IR) genre-based studies have been performed to explain dynamic and hybrid nature of culture and social contexts. However, few IR genre-based studies have examined similarities or differences between two languages considering their differences in rhetoric. Therefore, the purpose of this paper is (1) to develop a framework for analyzing Research Articles (RAs) written in Korean by experts considering different rhetorics between English and Korean; and (2) to identify what rhetorical moves occur in two groups of RAs written in English and Korean by experts, in terms of rhetorical structure from an IR perspective. A framework for analyzing RAs written in Korean was first developed with reference to interviews and previous research. Then, a comparison of the rhetorical structure of the two corpora was conducted through move analysis (Swales, 1981, 1990). Based on the findings, the overall rhetorical structure in the two corpora showed some differences with some intercultural aspects. This study is expected to contribute to genre-based writing instruction by conducting a comparative genre analysis of English and Korean RAs from an intercultural perspective.

        Analyzing Rhetorical Structure Development in Korean EAP Students from an Intercultural Rhetoric Perspective: A Corpus-based Genre Study

        This study examines the evolution of academic writing among Korean graduate students in terms of rhetorical structure from an intercultural rhetoric perspective. It analyzes four distinct corpora produced by Korean L1 experts, English L1 experts, and English L2 students at two different academic stages, aiming to identify differences in rhetorical structure between English and Korean using move analysis. Initially, it compares introductions in research articles (RAs) authored by experts in English and Korean. Subsequently, it investigates how writings by the same Korean graduate students at different academic levels compare to those produced by expert groups. The study employs quantitative analysis across these corpora and supplements this with qualitative insights drawn from interviews with Korean authors, rhetoric specialists, and Korean L2 students to ensure accurate interpretation. Results indicate that even lower-level Korean graduate students' writings, as L2 writers, exhibit a closer alignment with English rather than Korean rhetoric. The findings advance our understanding of how IR and EAP students' developmental processes unfold in terms of rhetorical structure, highlighting their hybrid nature. This study sheds light on the relatively unexplored area of English L2 writers' acquisition of rhetorical structure within the RA genre and suggests pedagogical implications for EAP genre-based writing.
