      • Application of Korean Standard Quality Excellence Index for Strategic Quality Improvement Planning in Korea

Vol.2015 No.2

Purpose: As an ongoing pursuit of quality excellence, Korea continues to perform annual product quality evaluation based on Korean Standard Quality Excellence Index (KSQEI) across multiple industries by representative customers and experts in each industry. As a result, KSQEI has been providing a reliable quality measurement to the customers while providing a guideline for quality improvement planning to the firms. This study analyzes the current level of product quality in Korea and investigates the impact of quality elements on consumer``s satisfaction. Methodology/Approach: The most recent KSQEI measurements are analyzed in order to assess the current level of product quality in Korea. Comparisons of weighting methodologies are performed based on AHP, entropy, and a compromised weighting approach. Multiple linear regression analyses are also conducted to identify the effectiveness of product and hedonic quality elements on consumer``s satisfaction. Findings: The quality improvement priority orders vary depending on the chosen perspective of objective or subjective methodological tool Additionally, the implicit inferences indicate that firms need to set up improvement strategies by considering consumer``s satisfactory group as well as firm``s unique differences. Research Limitation/implication: This study has been performed based on the scope of Korean quality index measurement, KSQEI, which is a representative national quality evaluation system. The index has been initially designed as a generic model to evaluate the product quality within domestic environment. Therefore, feedbacks of global consumers were not available for this study. Originality/Value of paper: This research is based on the most recent results of KSQEI through which national quality levels have been measured for 100 firms over 20 industrial groups. For each industry, 717 respondents (90% consumers and 10% experts) on the average have been surveyed in order to assess the product quality, hedonic quality, and consumer``s satisfaction. This study reveals the current level of product quality in Korea and delineates both the importance of weighing methodologies and the prioritization strategy using consumer``s satisfactory group when employing KSQEI for quality improvement.

An Evaluative Study on the Quality of Papers on the Effects of the Smoking Prevention Programs in Korea

Park, Eunok Korean Society for Health Education and Promotion Vol.20 No.4

This investigation was performed to summarize a few prominent features of smoking prevention program studies and to evaluate the quality of smoking prevention program studies using the Quality of Study Rating Form (QSRF). 24 school-based smoking prevention programs were subjected to an evaluation of study quality using QSRF. Study quality was 57.29 points out of 100 points on average, so it cannot be said that study quality was good. Most of the studies described the subjects and the intervention contents and intervention time. 50% stated where the intervention occurred specifically, 50% of the studies either discussed a specific theory that justified the use of one or more intervention methods, or they cited literature said to support the chosen intervention method. Only one study assigned subjects randomly to experimental groups or control groups and 50.0% of the studies showed baseline equality. There was no study where subjects were blind to being in the treatment or control group or where subjects were selected randomly by random sampling procedure. 79.2% of the studies had non-treated control groups and 20.8% of the studies had comparison groups with other treatments in the form of either other delivery methods or other contents. Sample sizes were larger than 21 in the experimental group for all studies. 75% of the studies stated face validity of outcome measure or cited from previous literature. 58.3% of the studies tested reliability and 45.8% reported the reliability measure was a figure of .70 or greater. There was no study where those rating outcomes were rated blind, because researchers generally collected data by themselves. Outcome measures were taken only after the intervention was completed and tests of statistical significance were generally referred to statistical method and p value in all studies. All studies met the criteria that follow-up was greater than 75%. The implications for the future studies were discussed.

      • THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LOW QUALITY PRODUCT AND CONSUMER CHOICE

2018 Global Marketing Conference Vol.2018 No.07

The study is aimed to find out the influencing factors when consumers decide to choose products with low quality. The result indicates that major considered factors should be short life cycle, low quality, design, price and purchase intention, while price be considered as the one which has significant effect on consumers’ choices of accepting low quality, as well as product design. Most companies put the market share at the vital position, in traditional commercial thinking, high quality always means that products will be accepted by most customers; but now it is totally different. We take fast fashion industry and mobile phone industry as examples and choose fsQCA as the methodology to analyses the relationship between variable and result. Most of the customers are pursuing for high quality with low price (Dodds et al., 1991; Alfred, 2013; Shirai, 2015). But the companies are difficult to make the high quality products have low price. The companies can have the high quality advantage. However, quality is not the only factor to make the products with high price, design, corporate culture and brand can also be the factors (Homburg et al., 2015). How to make the consumers accept the low quality in short lifecycle product (e.g. fast fashion or high-tech industry), which means consumers may purchase new product to replace the old one before it has problems. In our study, we collect these data from customers via questionnaire. And use fsQCA to analyze the relationship between price, design and short lifecycle, all these influencing factors and customer purchase intention on low quality product. And we have some findings. Sometimes, low quality products can help companies achieve success by bringing income and satisfy consumers’ needs of goods and services in affordable price. From company’s aspect, low quality products are more affordable than those of high quality, so these products will win larger market share and promote fast fashion items to sell fast. While customers sometimes demand more products with good design, at the same time, they cannot bear the expensive items, low quality products can achieve balanced between demands and consuming ability. This means both companies and customers can get win-win situation.

Vol.60 No.2

This study presents a comparative analysis of systems and management of law journals in both Korea and Japan, based on a question whether or not the rating system on law journals in Korea contributes to the development of quality legal research. Chapter 1 presents a general standard of evaluating scholarly journals. Scholarly journals are evaluated in terms of the quality (academic level, research value, etc.) of their articles. Law journals are evaluated on the basis of similar criteria. Chapter 2 examines the rating system on whole scholarly journals and its management on law journals and indicates problems of the system and management. While Korean policy on the management of scholarly journals has been successful in increasing the number of law journals, it has failed to contribute to the improvement of their quality. It has been indicated that the policy has difficult to assure the quality of law journal articles. Chapter 3 shows the present situation of Japanese law journals and inquires into their quality control of articles. Japan has neither rating system nor systematic evaluations of law journal quality like Korea. Even peer review of articles is only partially conducted in Japan. How do Japanese law journals assure quality of articles? This study makes comprehensive list of Japanese law journals and categorizes them as commercial journals, journals of academic association, bulletins of universities, etc. Then, this study inquires their way to control quality of articles, based on the result of the comprehensive listing of law journals and an exploratory survey of law researchers. Japanese law journals enforce article quality control through selection of authors by editors of publishing companies and editorial boards comprised of well-established law researchers, a partial peer review system, community activities in academic societies, and the overall academic job appointment process. The quality of Japanese articles, controlled through these means, operates as the most important indicator in evaluating law researchers. Thus, Japanese law journals attempt improving levels of the quality of their articles not through the rating system on journals which Korea adopts but through other means such as community activities in academic societies, while effect of Korean policy to assure the quality of articles through increasing the number of articles published in scholarly journals including law journals has been decreasing to the limit. This means it is time to change direction of the Korean rating system on law journals. The authors argue that Korea needs a reform of systems and management regarding law journals to improve the quality of articles in taking the character of the law research into consideration, even though the authors are not able to evaluate the present quality of Korean law journal articles. The means to reform the authors argue is presented in Chapter 4. If the present rating system is maintained, the authors suggest a system which evaluate only formal requirements of law journals and leave evaluation on quality or academic value to autonomy of the academic marketplace. The authors argue, however, that it is better to phase out the existing system regarding evaluation on law journals and leave it to autonomy of the academic marketplace in order to develop Korean law journals into ones competitive with Japanese peers at least.

2020 Asian Oncology Nursing Vol.20 No.2

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to identify the changes of chemotherapy induced peripheral neuropathy (CIPN), sleep quality, and quality of life and their interrelationships following chemotherapy. Methods: A sample of 52 patients who had been diagnosed with stomach cancer receiving oxaliplatin containing chemotherapy were included in a prospective longitudinal study. The assessment tools were Chemotherapy-induced Peripheral Neuropathy 20, Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index, and EORTC Quality of Life-Cancer. The data were collected at three time points: pre-chemotherapy, post-chemotherapy, and three months after the completion of chemotherapy, using questionnaires given between June 2017 and March 2019. Data were analyzed using descriptive statistics, repeated measures analysis of variance, and multiple regression analysis. Results: Post-chemotherapy, 19.2% of patients complained of CIPN and 21.2% exhibited CIPN at three-month follow-up. Repeated measures ANOVA showed a significant increase in CIPN after chemotherapy and it remained high at three-month follow-up (F = 39.90, p< .001). Functional quality of life (F = 8.23, p< .001) and symptom quality of life (F = 7.88, p= .001) also showed significant decreases after chemotherapy, and symptom quality of life remained low at three-month follow-up. However, for sleep quality, no significant main effect of time point was shown. CIPN and sleep quality were a factor influencing quality of life with an explanatory power of 48.3% at post-chemotherapy and 65.3% at three-month follow up. Conclusion: These results suggest that chemotherapy is highly associated with CIPN and symptoms affecting quality of life in cancer patients. Nursing intervention is needed to monitor and relieve these symptoms of patients during the cancer care trajectory.

Vol.42 No.2

This study aimed to analyze the usefulness of age integration as a policy orientation through a frame of life satisfaction. For the research purpose, this study employed the data from 33 OECD countries. This study categorized the subject countries in to four types by the level of age integration, elder``s quality of life, and total society``s quality of life. Also, this study analyzed the impacts of level of age integration on elder``s quality of life as well as total society``s quality. The results revealed that Korea was the only country with significantly lower level of age integration in objective dimension, elder``s quality of life, and total society``s quality than comparatives. Results of regression analyses showed that the level of age integration measured in an objective way significantly determined elder``s quality of life but not total society``s quality. Unlike age integration measured in an objective way, the level of age integration measured in an subjective way impacted both on elder``s quality of life and total society``s quality. Implication from this study was discussed.

Observation of changes in quality of life for 5 years after thyroid surgery: an observational cross-sectional study in Korean population

        Woochul Kim,Ja Kyung Lee,Hyeong Won Yu,Su-jin Kim,Young Jun Chai,June Young Choi*,Kyu Eun Lee* 대한외과학회 2023 Annals of Surgical Treatment and Research(ASRT) Vol.105 No.5

Purpose: As thyroid cancer patients are experiencing longer disease-free survival periods, evaluating their quality of life after surgery has become crucial. However, studies on this topic have primarily focused on Western populations, leaving a gap in understanding the Korean patient population’s experiences and needs. This study aims to address this gap and provide insights into the quality of life of thyroid cancer patients in Korea. Methods: This cross-sectional study evaluated the quality of life of Korean thyroid cancer patients who underwent thyroid lobectomy or total thyroidectomy. Patients were surveyed using the European Organization for Research and Treatment of Cancer Quality of Life Questionnaire (EORTC-QLQ-C30, ver. 3.0) during outpatient clinic visits from January to September 2015. The results were analyzed by comparing them to scores of the general population and based on the time elapsed since surgery. This approach allowed for a comprehensive evaluation of the quality-of-life outcomes in this patient population. Results: The study found that thyroidectomy had a notable impact on patients’ role and cognitive functions. Patients also experienced worsened symptoms such as fatigue, dyspnea, and constipation, which improved over time and returned to normal levels. However, there were no significant changes in other functions and symptoms after surgery. Conclusion: The study’s findings showed that thyroidectomy had a relatively minor impact on the functional and symptomatic well-being of patients. Therefore, the results suggest that thyroid surgery may be a safe and effective treatment option for thyroid cancer patients seeking to maintain a good quality of life.
