The Free Water Knock Out (FWKO) vessel is a primary oil separation process device in oil sands plant. In general, the multiphase separator separates a mixture of oil, gas, and water by density gradient. The horizontal type of FWKO vessel which was generally used is divided into four compartments. The initial separation section is a crucial process for the control of kinetic energy and velocity of the feed fluids. Vane distributor which is one of the important inlet devices improves separation efficiency by reducing agitation and foaming. In this study, the effect of the change of fluid flow according to configuration of inlet vane on the separation performance was numerically investigated. In particular, the velocity vector field, streamlines and volume fraction were calculated and graphically depicted using the commercial code, ANSYS FLUENT ver. 16.1. In order to evaluate the separation efficiency of FWKO vessel, the analysis of mass flow rate of oil and water was employed.
