Purpose : The purpose of this study was to compare the differences in muscle activity of the rectus abdominis, internal oblique, and external oblique muscles according to abdominal muscle exercise methods such as plank exercise, side plank exercise, and crunch exercise. Methods : This study was conducted with 37 college students. All subjects participating in this study were randomly assigned to the plank exercise group, the side plank exercise group, and the crunch exercise group. The exercise corresponding to each group was performed for a total of 8 weeks. The muscle activity of the abdominal muscles was measured before the experiment, 4 weeks, and 8 weeks, and the rectus abdominis, internal oblique, and external oblique muscles were measured. Results : As a result of comparison according to the period in the change in muscle activity of the abdominal muscles after exercise, the amount of change in muscle activity in all three muscles showed a significant difference. As a result of the post-hoc analysis, the muscle activity value of the internal oblique muscle after 4 weeks in the plank exercise showed a significant difference from the value after 8 weeks. In the side plank exercise, the muscle activity values of the rectus abdominis and external oblique muscles before and after 4 weeks showed significant differences from those after 8 weeks. And in the crunch exercise, the muscle activity value of the rectus abdominis muscle before exercise showed a significant difference from the value after 8 weeks. Conclusion : Plank exercise increases the muscle activity of the rectus abdominis, side plank exercise increases the rectus abdominis and external oblique muscles, and crunch exercise increases the muscle activity of the rectus abdominis. Therefore, it is thought that the stability of the trunk can be improved more efficiently if all three exercises are performed.

Effect of Shoulder Abduction Angles on EMG Activity of the Abdominal Muscles during Single Leg Holding on the Foam Roller

        ( Sung Joon Yun ),( Jun Hee Kim ) 대한물리치료학회 2020 대한물리치료학회지 Vol.32 No.4

Purpose: This study examined the electromyography (EMG) activity of the abdominal muscles and the ratio of the oblique abdominal muscle activity to the rectus abdominis muscle during a single-leg holding position with isometric shoulder abduction (SLHISA) in the supine position on a foam roller. Methods: Nineteen healthy males were recruited to the study. Each subject was asked to lay on a round foam roller and perform single-leg (nondominant) holding with contralateral shoulder abduction to one of three angles (45°, 90°, or 135°) in random order. The surface EMG signals of the bilateral rectus abdominis (RA), external oblique abdominis (EO), and combined internal oblique abdominis (IO) and transverse abdominis (TrA) muscle were collected during the tasks. The EO/RA and (IO & TrA)/RA ratios were determined using surface EMG. One way repeated measure ANOVA with three SLHISAs was used to assess the significant abdominal muscle EMG activity and the ratio of the oblique abdominal muscles activity to the RA muscle. The statistical significance level was p<0.05. Results: The results were as follows. The SLHISA 135° showed significantly higher EMG activity of both RAs, left EO, and right IO & TrA muscles (p<0.05). The right EO and left IO and TrA muscles/RA were significantly different among the SLHISA angles. The SLHISA 45° showed a significantly greater ratio of right EO/RA and left IO & TrA/RA (p<0.05). Conclusion: SLHISA on a foam roller is useful for lumbopelvic stabilization exercise by increasing the activity and recruiting a specific pattern of the oblique abdominal muscle.

Vol.13 No.1

The purpose of this study was to study the effect of external loads on the thickness change of the transverse abdominis, intra oblique muscle, and extra oblique muscle when prone hip extension with knee flexion. This study was conducted on 25 healthy adults, and prone hip extension with knee flexion was performed with 0kg, 1kg, and 2kg of sandbags worn on the ankles in a prone position. The change in muscle thickness was measured using ultrasound equipment. The thickness of the transverse abdominis and internal oblique muscles increased significantly when prone hip extension was performed with an external load applied rather than prone hip extension without an external load. There was no significant change in muscle thickness of external oblique muscle. We propose that providing an external load when performing prone hip extension is more effective for activation of deep abdominal muscles.

Effects of Shoulder Abduction in Opposite Directions on EMG Activity in the Abdominal Muscles during Single Leg Raising in the Supine Position on the Foam Roller in Healthy Subjects

        윤성준,김문환 대한물리치료학회 2015 대한물리치료학회지 Vol.27 No.4

Purpose: The purpose of this study was to examine the electromyographic (EMG) activity of the abdominal muscles and to compare the activity ratios of the bilateral rectus abdominis (RA) to oblique abdominal muscles during shoulder abduction in opposite directions with single leg raising (SLR) performed in the supine position on a foam roller. Methods: Fifteen healthy subjects were recruited to the study. Each subject lay on the foam roller and performed left single leg raising with right or left shoulder 90° abduction (Abd); performed in a random order. Surface EMG recordings of selected abdominal muscles (i.e., the RA, external oblique abdominis [EO], internal oblique abdominis [IO], and transverse abdominis [TrA]) were normalized to maximum voluntary isometric contraction. EO/RA and IO and TrA/RA ratios were determined with surface EMG. Data were analyzed by Independent t-test. The statistical significance level was p<0.05. Results: The results were as follows: (1) the right RA, left EO, and right IO and TrA muscle activities increased significantly at the left SLR with left Abd compared to the left SLR with right Abd (p<0.05); and (2) the ratio of right EO/RA activity increased significantly at the left SLR with right Abd compared to left Abd (p<0.05). Conclusion: These findings suggest that left SLR with left Abd on a foam roller is an appropriate exercise for activation of specific oblique abdominal muscles.

Comparison of Trunk Muscles between 3 Different Squats in Normal Adults

        최아란,정지혜,이승원 물리치료재활과학회 2024 Physical therapy rehabilitation science Vol.13 No.1

Objective: This Study aimed to examine the changes in muscle activity of trunk muscles by performing three squat exercises on normal adults. Design: cross-sectional studyMethods: Thirty-two adult subjects participated in this study. General squat, overhead squat, and overhead squat combined with abdominal stabilization were randomly performed for 5 seconds, 3 times, to calculate the average muscle activation. Muscle activation was normalized using electrodes on the rectus abdominis, external oblique, internal oblique, and erector spinae muscles to measure maximum voluntary isometric contraction (MVIC) for 5 seconds, repeated 3 times each. Results: There was a significant difference in the mean and maximal muscle activity of the bilateral erector spinae (ES) when comparing the squat to the overhead squat (p<0.05). There was a significant difference (p<0.05) in the mean and maximal muscle activity of the bilateral external oblique (EO) when comparing the overhead squat to the overhead squat combined with the abdominal stabilization technique. When comparing the squat to the overhead squat with abdominal stabilization, there was a significant difference in the mean and maximum muscle activity of the bilateral RA, EO, and left Internal oblique (IO) (p<0.05), and there was a significant difference in the maximum muscle activity of the bilateral erector spinae (ES) (p<0.05). Post hoc tests showed significant differences between squatting methods for the RA, EO, IO, and ES (p<0.017). Conclusion: The results of this study showed that squats combined with abdominal stabilization were more effective at activating core muscles than squats or overhead squats alone.
