        The effect of lactation number, stage, length, and milking frequency on milk yield in Korean Holstein dairy cows using automatic milking system

        Objective: The aim of the current study was to describe the relationship between milk yield and lactation number, stage, length and milking frequency in Korean Holstein dairy cows using an automatic milking system (AMS). Methods: The original data set consisted of observations from April to October 2016 of 780 Holstein cows, with a total of 10,751 milkings. Each time a cow was milked by an AMS during the 24 h, the AMS management system recorded identification numbers of the AMS unit, the cow being milking, date and time of the milking, and milk yield (kg) as measured by the milk meters installed on each AMS unit, date and time of the lactation, lactation stage, milking frequency (NoM). Lactation stage is defined as the number of days milking per cows per lactation. Milk yield was calculated per udder quarter in the AMS and was added to 1 record per cow and trait for each milking. Milking frequency was measured the number of milkings per cow per 24 hour. Results: From the study results, a significant relationship was found between the milk yield and lactation number (p<0.001), with the maximum milk yield occurring in the third lactation cows. We recorded the highest milk yield, in a greater lactation length period of early stage (55 to 90 days) at a 4× milking frequency/d, and the lowest milk yield was observed in the later stage (>201 days) of cows. Also, milking frequency had a significant influence on milk yield (p<0.001) in Korean Holstein cows using AMS. Conclusion: Detailed knowledge of these factors such as lactation number, stage, length, and milking frequency associated with increasing milk yield using AMS will help guide future recommendations to producers for maximizing milk yield in Korean Dairy industries.

      • 로봇 착유시스템의 착유성능 및 착유량에 미치는 영향

        부족한 노동력 해소와 유질 및 유량의 향상을 위해서 5축 다관절 매니퓰레이터와 착유컵 착탈 시스템 및 영상처리 시스템을 이용한 로봇 착유시스템을 개발하였으며, 착유우 실험을 통해 시스템 성능분석 및 착유량에 미치는 영향을 알아보았다. 1. 착유컵 장착시간은 최소 17초, 최대 38초, 평균 27초가 소요되었으며, 이는 착유성능에 영향이 없을 것으로 판단되었다. 착유컵 탈락은 약 1초 내에 유두에서 탈락하는 것으로 나타나 착유작업에 지장을 주지 않을 것으로 판단되었다. 2. 로봇 착유시스템을 이용한 착유량은 평균 착유량은 7.5 kg으로 나타났으며, 주간 착유량의 표준편차는 0.7 kg으로 나타났다. 비유곡선을 이용한 착유량 분석도 로봇 착유시스템에 의한 착유 시 착유량에 큰 영향을 미치지 않은 것으로 판단되었다. 본 연구에서 개발된 로봇 착유시스템은 착유컵 착탈 성능과 착유량에 미치는 영향에 관한 것으로 착유실내의 모든 착유작업을 수행하기 위해서는 착유전 유두세척, 유두 마사지 및 전처리 공정과 착유우 후처리 및 소독 공정이 모두 필요한 사항이며, 앞으로 연구가 필요할 것으로 사료된다. The authors of this study have developed a robot milking system composed of a multi-articular manipulator, a teat-cup attachment system, and an image processing system. In order to verify the efficacy of this system, we have conducted a performance analysis and measurement experiment of milk yield, using dairy cattle. It was concluded that teat recognition using the image processing system, teat-cup attachment, and detachment system did not binder milking. The milking yield of the robot milking system was analyzed based on a lactation curve. As a result, it was determined that the use of a robot milking system had no significant effects on milking yields. The robot milking system described in this study is designed specifically with a focus on teat-cup attachment and detachment performance, as well as the effect of these factors on milking yield. In the future, in-depth studies regarding the washing of the teats prior to milking, teat massage, pre-treatment and post-treatment processes after milking, and disinfection processes shall be conducted, in order to render this system feasible for use in an actual milking parlor.

        Study on Milkability Traits in Holstein Cows

        The present investigation was undertaken to study the milkability characteristics of Holstein cows. Out of 6,660 initial records 4,607 records were finally included in the analysis after deleting some records with an abnormal range of values for the traits considered. These 4,607 Holstein cows belonged to a total of 122 herds located in a province in Korea. The 'LactoCorder' instrument was used to electronically record the milkability traits at the milking parlor. A total of 19 traits were studied which were broadly classified into milk yield, milking speed, milking time and the electrical conductivity related traits. The SAS 9.1 statistical software was used to carry out analyses. The average maximum milk flow per minute was 3.21 kg/min, while the average milking speed during the main milking process (DMHG) had a mean value of 2.30 kg/min. The total milk yield was 14.14 kg, 62% of which was milked during the first three minutes of the milking. The average total milking time was 8.23 min. Among the three phases of the main milking process, the time of stable milk flow had the longest time (2.97 min) followed by the time at the decline phase (2.62 min). The average time taken to reach the plateau phase was 1.08 min, which can still be reduced further through improved managemental practices. Among milk yield traits, milk yield during the first two (MG2) and three (MG3) minutes of milking had high positive correlation with milking speed traits and negative correlations with almost all the milking time traits except time of incline in milk flow from 0.5 kg/min till the attainment of the plateau phase (tAN). Milking speed traits had negative correlations with total milking time, time at main milking process, time at plateau and with the time at decline. Since there was medium to high negative correlation between the milking speed and the time at plateau, there is a need for selection of cows which have intermediate milking speed so that it could require less milking time and also the optimum (higher and longer) plateau time. Proper pre-stimulation and avoiding over milking will help in further reducing the milking time and thus will add to the net profit of the farmer.

        Total three hundred and fourteen dairy cows were used in this study to analysis of correlation between milking levels and automatic milking system (AMS). Cows were divided into five groups according to their milking levels (over 50 kg/day, 49~40 kg/day, 39~30 kg/day, 29~20 kg/day, 19~10 kg/day). All groups were compared with daily milking number, rejected number by AMS, residence time at AMS, milking time, flow rate of milk. Daily milking number and milking time were higher in the group of over 50 kg and 49~40 kg than that of other groups (p<0.05). There are no correlation on rejected number by AMS, residence time at AMS and flow rate of milk between milking levels and AMS. In addition, we found that the milk yield affected to feed intake and rumination of dairy cows. In conclusion, present results indicated that installation of AMS on dairy farms with high milk producing cows might be affected positively.

      • 착유 자동화를 위한 로봇 착탈 시스템

        A Robotic milking cluster system with the manipulator for an automatic milking system was designed and built for farmer to work easily and comfortably during milking processing. The cluster system was composed of screws, cams and links for power transmission, DC motors, the Quick Basic one-chip microprocessor, the vision system for image processing, and tea-cups. Software, written in Visual C+ and Quick Basic, combined the function of image capture, image processing, milking cluster control, and control into one control. The unit was made to transfer from four fixed points to four teats with four teat-cups. Performance tests of the cluster unit, the fully integrated system, were conducted to attach and detach the teat-cup on the teat of a artificial cow. The transfer programming provided for a teat-cup milking loop during the system starts and comes back the original fixed point at the manipulator of it for milking. It transferred the teat-cup with a success rate of more than 70%. The average time it took ot perform the milking loop was about 20 seconds.

        착유방식 및 지방 보충급여가 원유 및 지방특성에 미치는 효과

        AMS와 CMS 및 보호지방의 급여 여부가 우유 성분과 유지방 특성에 미치는 영향을 조사하기 위하여 본 연구를 실시하였다. 착유방식과 보호지방 급여 여부에 따라 AMS 및 CMS목장을 각 4개소씩 선정하여 월 1회 집합유 원유시료를 채취하였으며, 총 5개월간 유성분, 유지방구(MFG) 크기, 지방산 및 유리지방산 조성을 분석하였다. 착유방식에 따른 일반 유성분, MFG 크기, 지방산 조성의 유의적 차이는 관찰되지 않았으나, AMS로 착유된 우유의 유리지방산 함량이 CMS로 착유된 우유에 비해 유의적으로(p<0.05) 높았으며, 이는 AMS의 착유 횟수가 CMS에 비해 더 많았기 때문인 것으로 판단된다. 보호지방을 급여한 농장의 우유를 비급여 농장과 비교하였을 때 유성분에는 차이가 없었으나 장쇄지방산(LCFA)함량이 더 높은 것으로 나타났으며, 유지방구의 크기 또한 증가하는 경향을 보였는데 이는 급여한 보호지방의 주요지방산인 LCFA가 유지방으로 전이되었기 때문으로 해석된다. 또한 공시한 모든 AMS 목장에서 원유의 산패문제는 발생하지 않았는데, 유리지방산 함량이 CMS에 비해 유의적으로 높았지만 산패를 일으킬 정도로 높은 수준은 아니었던 것으로 판단된다. 이상의 결과를 바탕으로 할 때 AMS는 유성분 및 유지방 특성의 측면에서 CMS 대비 주목할 만한 차이를 보이지 않았으며 보호지방의 급여는 유지방구 크기 및 장쇄지방산농도에 영향을 미치므로 향후 목장형 유가공을 실시할 경우이를 응용할 여지가 있을 것으로 사료된다. This study was carried out to investigate the effects of different milking systems (AMS, automatic milking system and CMS, conventional milking system) and of supplemental fat feeding on milk composition and milk fat characteristics. The composition, MFG (milk fat globule) size, fatty acids (FAs), and free fatty acids (FFAs) of the milk from 4 AMS and 4 CMS dairy farms were analyzed on the basis of the milking system and feeding of protected fat. The milking system did not affect milk composition, MFG size, and milk FAs, but FFA content of AMS milk were significantly higher than that of CMS milk. Feeding of protected fat resulted in the production of milk much higher in LCFAs (long chain FAs); however, the milk composition was not affected by fat supplementation. Cows administered protected fat supplements produced milk containing MFGs with a large average diameter.

        착유방식이 목장형 유가공으로 제조된 고다치즈의 품질 특성에 미치는 영향

        최근 보급이 증가되고 있는 AMS가 목장형 유가공장에서 생산되는 치즈의 특성에 미치는 영향을 알아보기 위한 연구를 실시하였다. 첫 번째 연구에서는 AMS 및 CMS 농장에서 원유를 채취하여 동일한 조건에서 각각 고다치즈를 제조하여 6개월 숙성시킨 다음 일반성분 및 유리지방산 분석과 관능평가를 실시하였고, 두 번째 연구에서는 목장형 유가공장 7곳에서 제조한 고다치즈 시료를 채취하여 일반성분과 조직 특성을 비교하였다. 본 연구 결과, 고다치즈의 일반성분은 조회분을 제외하고는 착유 방식이나 목장에 따른 유의적인 차이가 나타나지 않았고, 유리지방산은 각 목장에 따른 차이를 보여주었으나 관능평가에 영향을 미치지 않았으며, 착유 방식에 의한 유리지방산 및 관능평가 결과에서도 유의적인 차이도 발견할 수 없었다. 조직 특성 역시 목장 간에 유의적 차이가 컸던 관계로 착유방식에 따른 차이는 나타나지 않았다. 결론적으로 착유방식은 목장형 유가공장에서 제조한 고다치즈의 특성에는 영향을 미치지 않을 것으로 판단되며, 향후 같은 고다치즈라 하더라도 각 목장별로 차별화하여 전통과 개성이 있는 목장형 유가공 제품으로 발전할 가능성을 보인 것으로 사료된다. This investigation was carried out to study effects of different milking systems on the characteristics of Gouda cheese produced at farmstead milk-processing plants. In the first study, raw milk was collected from automatic milking system and conventional milking system farms, and Gouda cheeses were prepared under the same conditions. After 6 months of aging, the chemical composition was analyzed and free fatty acid (FFA) analysis and sensory evaluation were carried out on the products. In the second study, Gouda cheese samples were collected from seven farmstead milk-processing plants and the chemical composition and texture profile analysis were evaluated. No significant differences were found in the chemical composition of Gouda cheese according to different milking systems or different farms except crude ash. FFA analysis showed significant differences among farms, but sensory evaluation showed no significant differences. No significant differences were observed in FFA content and sensory assessment of different milking systems. Texture profile analysis revealed that there were significant differences in each cheese made at different farm plants, but there were no differences when different milking systems were used.

        SOME MECHANICAL FACTORS AFFECTING MACHINE MILKING CHARACTERISTICS UNDER SEMI-ARID CONDITION

        The effect of mechanical factors and season of the year on milking characteristics (milk yield, time of milking, rate of milk flow, stripping time and tripping milk) were studied on 26 Holstein Friesian cows, raised under Saudi Arabia environmental conditions. Cows were in the third and fourth lactation and reached the peak. Cows milked twice a day with equal intervals. Three vacuum levels (34, 38 and 42 cfm) and two pulsation ratios were used to form six vacuum-pulsation combinations. The study was carried during two seasons Autumn-Winter (S1) and Spring-Summer (S2). After absorbing the cow equations least square analysis was used to analyze the data. Vacuum level 38 cfm and pulsation ratio 70:30 was the best among all combinations of vacuum level-pulsation ratio. No significant effect (p < .01) for season, up to the seventh half minute, on the rate of milk flow. However, season of the year has a significant effect on total milk yield, stripping time and stripping milk.

        낙농경영에 있어서 자동착유시스템 도입의 경제성 분석

        Many dairy farms in Korea have been using a different type of conventional milking systems (CMS) such as tandem and herringbone. CMS require farmers to collect milk twice a day. Compared to this, automatic milking systems (AMS) require less time and labor intensity for milking. However, dairy farmers do not know whether or not AMS are economically beneficial for them due to the lack of information about AMS. Therefore, this study compared the various features of AMS and CMS using economic analysis such as cost analysis and break even point analysis. In conclusion, AMS do not have a higher economic efficiency than CMS because dairy farmers need more time and cost to install AMS than CMS. On the other hand, AMS reduce working hour and labor intensity for milking. Therefore, farmers can spend more time for feeding management or disease control instead of milking. These could increase a lifespan of dairy cow which is economically beneficial for dairy farmers.

        Chlorella protothecoides의 밀킹 전후 연속 배양 시스템을 통한 유용물질 분석

        Chlorella are source of valuable compounds as lipids, proteins, carbohydrates, bioactive compounds. To continuous obtain the high-value materials of Chlorella protothecoides, we performed continuous cultivation after applying milking techniques to C. protothecoides grown with culture for 7 days in optical panel bioreactor (OPBR) system. Fatty acid and lutein in extracts from pre- and post-milking of C. protothecoides were analyzed using gas chromatography and high performance liquid chromatography, respectively. C. protothecoides were rich in unsaturated fatty acids with a high content of oleic acid(C18:1), which is suitable as a biofuel feedstock. The fatty acid content in pre- and post-milking of C. protothecoides was decreased from 126.424㎎/g d.w. to 119.341㎎/g d.w, and the lutein content decreased from 0.258㎎/g d.w. to 0.178㎎/g d.w. The results of this study demonstrate the feasibility of milking C. protothecoides for production of lipids for biofuels production. It was confirmed that microalgae can continuously obtain lutein present in a trace amount through a continuous culture from milking.
