Intra-regional trade of ASEAN+3: Trends and issues for the economic integration of East Asia

나희량 한국외국어대학교 국제지역연구센터 2015 International Area Studies Review Vol.18 No.2

This paper examined the structures and characteristics of ASEAN+3 intra-regional trade through an analysis of intra-regional trade share, the intra-regional trade intensity index, and the regional trade introversion index in terms of primary goods, intermediate goods, and final goods. We could see that the economic integration of ASEAN+3 would be enlarged and deepened through the progress and advancement of intra-regional trade. However, we found that although the volume and share of intra-regional trade has been growing, this may not indicate or guarantee the inherent advancement of the economic integration of the region. In particular, since the global financial economic crisis in 2008–2009 the introversion of the EU and NAFTA has grown, while that of ASEAN+3 has reduced. In this respect, it would be vital to make and practice innovative plans to develop intra-regional trade so that the foundation of the FTA among ASEAN+3 countries could be the catalyst for substantial development of intra-regional trade. Furthermore, in order for intra-regional trade to continue to develop, a more comprehensive and higher level of intra-regional economic integration is required. This can be realized through regulation, specific plans, and practical effort. Finally, to maximize the effect of intra-regional trade liberalization this needs to go beyond the boundary of intermediate goods and expand into final goods, especially consumption goods.

Vol.25 No.1

This study examines the trends and issues of intra-regional trade of ASEAN ahded of ASEAN Economic Community in 2015. For comparative study we examine the cases of EU, NAFTA, and MERCOSUR as well. ASEAN has achieved the economic development through trade liberalization and export-oriented strategy. Furthermore, intra-regional trade of ASEAN has been accelerated along with the launch of a regional free trade agreement AFTA in 1993, and free trade agreement(FTA) with China, Korea, Japan, India, and EU since the mid-2000s. For example, ASEAN’s trade volume has increased sharply and the intra-regional trade share has increased gradually during last 30 years (1980~2012). However, the quantitative growth like increase in the scale and share is not sufficient condition for the improvement of level of trade of qualitative growth. For ASEAN, intra-regional trade intensity index and regional trade introversion index have decreased in spite of the increase ofthe volume and share of intra-regional trade. On the contrary for EU, NAFTA, MERCOSUR, the intra-regional trade intensity index and regional trade introversion index have increased gradually meaning of the advance of intra-regional economic integration in these economic area. In particular, in order to successful launch of the ASEAN Economic Community by 2015 the strengthening of the linkage of production line and supply chain among ASEAN countries are necessary. Therefore, for the development of more comprehensive intra-regional trade development and a high level of regional economic integration, the liberalization of intra-regional trade should be advanced and the orders and norms for the trade need to be sought. In addition, intra-regional trade needs to be oriented toward final goods, especially consumer goods. The deepening intra-regional trade with a quantitative growth of trade in the region would be the one of the essential factors for the successful realization of the ASEAN Economic Community.

        동북아지역의 국제무역단위구조와 지역간 네트워크 분석

        심승진 한국동북아경제학회 2011 동북아경제연구 Vol.23 No.3

Using the inter-regional trade unit structure, this study investigates how a unit of intra-regional trade in a certain region induces the intra and inter-regional trade in the whole world. For this, using the inter-regional trade matrix, we draw an inter-regional trade unit structure among 5 main regions, including ortheast Asia, Southeast Asia. North America, EU and ROW(Rest of the World). Also we use the social network theory in the study. The analysis can derive some characteristics :(1) Northeast Asia region has very open linkages in intra-regional and inter-regional trade. (2) There is very strong intra-regional trade inducement in the Northeast Asia region and it gets stronger as time goes on. (3) In the network of intra and inter-regional trade, the Northeast Asia has an affinity with other regions. We expect that the intra-regional trade in the Northeast Asia induces the trade not only in the region but also in other regions to a great extend. The results may be very suggestive in bringing up a new frame of the FTA discussion in the Northeast Asia.

Global Value Chains and Regional Connection: Asia’s Shifting Inter- and Intra-Regional Trade Linkages

이준구 부경대학교 글로벌지역학연구소 2022 Journal of Global and Area Studies(JGA) Vol.6 No.3

The global value chain (GVC) mainly concerns the geographic dispersion and integration of the production-consumption system in the contemporary world economy. However, little work has been done conceptually regarding the GVC’s relationship with macro-regions like Asia, or in conjunction with regionalization. To address the gap, this paper examines the regional connection and interaction within Asia and beyond from the lens of GVCs. It introduces a GVC understanding of the global economy and discusses how the macro-regional dynamics can be comprehended in the context of GVCs and various interactions of intra- and extra-regional firms. The study proposes an analytical framework for GVC configurations relative to inter-regional and intra-regional connections. The paper then examines the evolving nature of Asia’s regional connection as the most dynamic region with contemporary GVCs. It specifically analyzes international trade networks in two GVC-intensive sectors, i.e., textile and apparel, and electronics, and highlights how inter- and intra-regional trade networks vary across sectors and product types and have changed over time. The study concludes by discussing Asia’s future regional connection amid post-pandemic uncertainties over GVCs.

        국제 텔레커뮤니케이션 교역의 지역화

        김경모(Kyung-Mo Kim) 한국언론학회 2003 한국언론학보 Vol.47 No.4

Regionalism has recently been an important dimension in the world economy and international telecommunications as well. This research examines the longitudinal trend of regional integration in the trade of telecommunications equipment among the Asia-Pacific countries. Using the network analysis, the trade of telecommunications (SITC number 764 item) among 40 countries are analyzed. The results reveal that regional integration has stably proceeded in the Asia-Pacific region during the 1990s in a sense that both the volume and link of intra-regional trade in telecommunications have slowly increased. The trade networks are very stable with the coexistence of center-periphery and subregional structures. The determinants of the network structure in intra-regional trade are examined through the spatial interaction model. The implications of intra-regional trade in telecommunications are discussed in the context of the regional trade policies and telecommunications development.

Port Choice by Intra-Regional Container Service Operators: An Application of DecisionMaking Techniques to Liner Services Between Malaysian and Other Asian Ports

Noorul Shaiful Fitri ABDUL RAHMAN,Theo Notteboom,Muhamad Nasir RAHMATDIN,Mohammad Khairuddin OTHMAN 한국해운물류학회 2019 The Asian journal of shipping and Logistics Vol.35 No.4

Intra-regional container service operators are challenged to design regular and reliable liner services connecting regional ports at the lowest cost and shortest transit time while considering customer demand. This paper focuses on the selection of ports of call in regular intra-regional container services, an under-researched part of the container shipping market. A combination of decisionmaking techniques (i.e. Analytical Hierarchy Process, fuzzy link-based and Evidential Reasoning) are presented to assist intra-regional container service operators in selecting ports of call. The proposed methodology is empirically applied to container services between Malaysian and other nearby Asian ports. While Port Klang is the main gateway to Malaysia, the results show that other Malaysian ports should play a more prominent role in accommodating intra-Asian container services. This research can assist maritime stakeholders in evaluating intra-regional port-to-port liner service configurations. Furthermore, the novel mix of decision-making techniques complements and enriches existing academic literature on port choice and liner service configuration.

Intra-regional Trade Effects of ASEAN Free Trade Area in the Textile and Clothing Industry

( Mohammed Faiz Shaul Hamid ),( Mohamed Aslam ) 세종대학교 경제통합연구소(구 세종대학교 국제경제연구소) 2017 Journal of Economic Integration Vol.32 No.3

This study investigates intra-regional trade effects of the ASEAN Free Trade Area in the textile and clothing industry by focusing on trade competitiveness and complementarities. Using a novel method of investigating intra-regional trade through 20 bilateral pairs of ASEAN countries, the study analyzed 1,040 observations at the HS3 level to determine revealed comparative advantage and intra-industry trade. The results for both revealed comparative advantage and intra-industry trade in the context of the textile and clothing industry show that most ASEAN countries compete predominantly in trade of unprocessed products or raw materials. Consumer or finished products do not exhibit a high degree of competition, which suggests that product diversification has enabled ASEAN countries to actively export to the global market. The results also show trade-creating and trade-diverting effects in a number of products categories, categories, suggesting that this divergence may disrupt ASEAN`s vision of becoming a regional hub for the textile and clothing industry.

      • 부산의 산업별 생산비용과 역내수요로 본 산업발전방향

        지해명 동의대학교 경제경영전략연구소 2005 經濟經營硏究 Vol.3 No.1

A major problem behind the stagnation of Pusan economy is that the proper amount of private capital does not flow into Pusan area. To select appropriate industries for the region, this research adopts the methology of production cost and intra-regional demand for producers. Regional technical and trade coefficients are used for estimating production cost. The regional technical and trade coefficients are estimated through the product-mix approach and the entropy maximization model, respectively. The intra-regional demand is derived based on the trade coefficients, regional supply and regional demand. Following the methodology, promising industries for the region are selected. Using the multiplier analysis of MRIO model, the effect of the industries on the regional economy is evaluated. This research concludes that developing precision industry may be an alternative to promote economic growth for Pusan.

THE IMMEDIATE IMPACT OF EURO ON INTRA-REGIONAL TRADE: AN EVENT STUDY APPROACH

RUHUL SALIM,SHAHRIAR KABIR 중앙대학교 경제연구소 2010 Journal of Economic Development Vol.35 No.3

This article applies the event study approach to assess the immediate impact of Euro on intra-regional trade among the European Union (EU) members. Here, the post-Euro intra-regional trade has been compared with the pre-Euro intra-regional trade, while the implementation of Euro has been considered as the event. The results show that the trade enhancement at the immediate post-event period is 1.2 times of the immediate pre-event period for France, Germany, Italy and Spain, while immediate trade enhancement for all Euro-members is 1.14 times. The estimation has been statistically justified by using the gravity model. This study thus provides the first empirical evidence on the assessment of currency union impact on intra-regional trade by using the alternative method, the event study approach.
