      • Factors Affecting the Health Promoting Behaviors in Working Men in Korea using Pender"s Health Promotion Model

Vol.2021 No.10

Aim: Working men in our country are making great efforts to ensure a successful life for work and family. In adulthood and middle age, it is easy to be exposed to chronic diseases, and it is easy to harm one"s health if one does not continue to make efforts to improve one"s health in daily life. Therefore, the purpose of this study was to provide basic data for developing health promotion programs for office male workers by applying Pender"s health promotion model to analyze factors affecting the health promoting behaviors. Method: The data was collected for 10 days from July 15, 2021, using a questionnaire for 149 office male workers. The data analysis was conducted with frequency, percentage, mean, standard deviation, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffe test, Pearson"s correlational coefficients, and stepwise multiple regression. Result: Health promoting behaviors and previous health-related activities (r=.58, p<.001), perceived profitability (r=.41, p<.001), self-efficacy (r=.53, p<.001), social support (r=.39, p<.001), self-esteem (r=.47, p<.001), action plan (r=.67, p<.001) showed a high amount of correlation at a statistically significant level. The factors affecting of a subject"s health promoting behavior were the establishment of an action plan (β=.36), self-esteem (β=.27), previous health-related behaviors (β=.27) and health conditions (good) (β=.21), and their variables accounted for 61.0% of the health promoting behaviors of the subjects. Conclusion: To improve health promoting behaviors for office male workers, it is necessary to try to develop and operate health promotion programs considering their variables. The system and support are needed to facilitate work- and community-oriented health promotion activities that can be planned and carried out by working men themselves. It is also necessary to encourage men"s self-esteem, perception of health and health-related behaviors.

        Jing-Juin Huang,Huey-Shyan Lin,Miaofen Yen,Wai-Ming Kan,Bih-O. 2013 Asian Nursing Research Vol.7 No.2

Purpose: Interventions targeting multiple risk behaviors have the potential to offer greater health benefits on public health. The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effects of a Workplace Multiple Cardiovascular Disease Risks Reduction Program (WMCVDRRP) on male participants at high risk for cardiovascular disease. Methods: One group pretest-posttest design was applied in this study. No control group was assigned as this study was the first one in Taiwan conducted to promote participants’ health using WMCVDRRP and thus with the nature of a pilot study. The program design was based on the collaboration between the health clinic at the corporation and a nursing school targeting six health behaviors. Of the 465 individuals who participated, data from 283 participants were included in the analysis. The change in any of six health behaviors and eight physical indicators were tested as the effect of the WMCVDRRP. Results: Nearly 40% of the participants improved their regular exercise, diet control, stress management, and medication adherence. Although the improvement in drinking behaviors did not show statistical significance, 21% of the participants changed in alcohol consumption and 21% quit smoking. Eight physical indicators including systolic and diastolic blood pressure, total cholesterol, triglyceride, body mass index, waist-hip ratio, body fat, and muscle weight improved significantly. Conclusion: Dual collaboration between the industry and nursing schools could establish a cost-effective program to improve health behaviors and health status of participants.

Purpose : The purpose of this study was to identify health promotion behaviors of elementary school teachers and investigate the factors influencing the health promotion behaviors. Methods : Data were collected from 234 elementary school teachers in the B Metropolitan City Office of Education from 5th to 30th October, 2016. The collected data were analyzed by descriptive statistics, t-test, ANOVA, Scheffé test, Mann-Whitney test, Kruskal-Wallis test, Spearman correlation coefficient and multiple regression analysis, using SPSS/WIN 23.0. Results : The elementary school teachers' health perception scored 2.94 out of 4, health status 1.59 out of 3, and health promotion behaviors 2.66 out of 4. The level of mental health status (1.67) was higher than that of physical health status (1.54) and the most practiced health promotion behavior was spiritual growth (3.15) and the least was health responsibility (2.00). Significant negative correlations were found between health perception and health status(r=-.59, p<.001) and between health status and health promotion behaviors(r=-.41, p<.001). A significant positive correlation was found between health perception and health promotion behaviors(r=.32, p<.001). The significant factors influencing health promotion behaviors were job stress and health status. These factors explained 19.6% of the health promotion behaviors. Conclusion : It is necessary to establish measures to increase the health perception and health promotion behaviors of elementary school teachers and improve their health status. In addition, since job stress and health status are factors influencing health promotion behaviors, it is necessary to actively manage job stress and health status in order to increase health promotion behaviors.

Vol.10 No.1

Objectives: Our objective in this study was to measure the frequency of healthrelated behaviors amongst ninth grade students in Korea. The study investigated the association of alcohol and tobacco use with other health risk behaviors. We also examined social influences that affected youth health behaviors. Methods: A survey questionnaire was administered to 3,739 ninth grade students across eight schools in two cities in Korea. The questionnaire measured the frequency of tobacco, alcohol, and substance use, sexual intercourse, anti-social behaviors, violence, feelings of social isolation at school, depression or attempted suicide, absenteeism from school, gambling, weight control, and seatbelt use. The survey accounted for the social influence of parents, siblings, peers, and other adults on students' health behaviors. Data was analyzed with frequency, chi-square test, and logistic regression. Results: Students reported higher frequency of most of health risk behaviors than is reported in other studies on youth health behaviors in Korea. Male students reported statistically higher frequency than female students of tobacco and alcohol use, violence, sexual intercourse, and gambling; female students reported statistically higher frequency than males of depression or attempted suicide, and feelings of social isolation at school. The absence of one parent or both parents affected students' health behaviors, particularly among female students. The tobacco and alcohol use were statistically strongly associated with most of other health risk behaviors among students. Compared with parents, siblings, and other adults, peers' influence on students' tobacco and alcohol use were much stronger. Conclusions: Korea youth health-related behaviors should be monitored consistently in a surveillance system at the national level, and be improved through multidimensional and multi-level health promotion efforts in Korea.

Correlates of Health Behaviors in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease

2010 Asian Nursing Research Vol.4 No.1

Purpose To investigate the effect of cardiac knowledge and cardiac self-efficacy on health behaviors after controlling for influences from associating factors of health behaviors in patients with coronary artery diseases (CADs). Methods A descriptive correlational and cross-sectional design was used. Subjects with CADs were recruited from outpatient clinics of three academic medical centers. The cardiac knowledge, cardiac selfefficacy, and health behaviors were measured by Coronary Heart Disease Awareness and Knowledge Questionnaire, Cardiac Self-Efficacy Scale, and Health-Promoting Lifestyle Profile II respectively. The data collected were statistically analyzed by descriptive statistics, t test, Kruskal-Wallis test, analysis of variance,Pearson’s correlation analysis, and the hierarchical multiple regression analysis. Results A total of 157 subjects were recruited for this study. The mean age of subjects was 59.38 ± 10.04years, and three-fourths (75.2%) were male. Subjects showed relatively low cardiac knowledge, moderately high cardiac self-efficacy, and moderate level of health behaviors. The overall model significantly explained 48% of variance in health behaviors (F = 14.52, p < .001). Among predictors, age, education, smoking status, experience of receiving patient education, and cardiac self-efficacy significantly affected health behaviors, and cardiac self-efficacy had the greatest effect on health behaviors (β=.39). However, cardiac knowledge had no statistically significant influence on health behaviors after controlling for the other factors. Conclusion The findings suggested that cardiac self-efficacy was shown to be the most influencing factor on health behaviors but cardiac knowledge had no influence on health behaviors. The nursing interventions tailored on the patient characteristics should be developed in order to improve the health behaviors of patients with CADs. [Asian Nursing Research 2010;4(1):45–55]

2021 Asian Journal of Physical Education of Sport Scien Vol.9 No.2

The study was conducted to identify health risk behaviors and cluster types of female adolescents in Korea, explore their mental health status accordingly, and help come up with mediation measures to improve their health in the future. In this study, we analyzed the second raw data in 2017 through the 13th online survey of youth health behaviors. As a result, the overall distribution of mental health conditions and health risk groups among teenagers in Korea was more negative for high school students than middle school students, and there was a lack of sleep time, especially due to lack of physical activity. For cluster types according to the four health risk behaviors, O/E values were high, especially at extremes of patterns that did not do all or any health risk behaviors. Mental health status differed significantly depending on the pattern of clustering of health risk behaviors, and even if the same number of health risk behaviors, the impact on mental health status differed depending on the type of health risk behavior. Since health risk behaviors are closely related to each other and affect the mental health status of adolescents, it is necessary to seek arbitration in consideration of clustered health risk patterns rather than focusing on only one risk behavior.

Relationship of Smoking with Self-perceived Health and Selected Health Behaviors

Choi Eun-Jin Korean Society for Health Education and Promotion Vol.21 No.4

The purpose of this study was to analyze variables associated with smoking and selected health behaviors. This study targeted adult men and women over 20 of age. The sample population was drawn from the national sample, and the samples were chosen from the telephone book. A total of 1,500 cases were collected through a telephone based interview survey. As a tool for this study, a structured questionnaire was developed. the variables included self-perceived health status, and selected 7 health behaviors; smoking behavior, physical activities, eating habit, weight control, alcohol consumption, stress management, and cancer exam. The healthy life practice actions of Trans-theoretical model have been classified into five stages. Smokers were more likely than non-smokers to positive attitudes toward smoking and the impact of smoking in this study. This means that smokers's awareness toward the impact of smoking is very week. Smoking behavior was significantly related to other health related behaviors based on the correlation analysis. However, gender, engaging in regular physical activities, moderate consumption of alcoholic beverages, and receiving a cancer examination were the variables that can explain and predict a person's stages of adopting a non-smoking behavior. Self perceived health status was closely related to other health behaviors. Gender, age, and monthly household income were important demographic variables that have significant relationship with the self-perceived health status. Among the health behaviors, regular physical activities and weight control were significant predictable variables. Similar results have been found in the National health and Nutrition examination survey in Korea. As a result of this study, it was found that among the selected health behaviors, engaging in physical activity was an important variable to increase positive sense of health and non-smoking behaviors. Educational and policy level input is needed to increase awareness and provide chances to participate in fitness activities. To those who maintain exercise, the environmental support and diffusion of knowledge information and education data should be strengthened. To change attitudes toward smoking, more in-dept awareness campaign and education should be provided according to people's different behavioral status. In addition, not only diffusing health education data and delivering knowledge information through related programs, but also environmental support system that helps an individual maintain his/her action is required. Such a support system means settlement of the health enhancement base of school, workplace and community should be carried out, and the policy level support and regular programs should be provided and spread to the unit of community.
