21 Vol.10 No.5

The purpose of this study is to evaluate the healing environment of the library and propose measures to create a healing environment in the library. Through this, the library will become a ‘healing place for the soul’, a space where people who are hurt for various reasons can heal the hearts. In addition, the library can be a healing space that can improve people’s quality of life and make changes. For this purpose, the healing environment elements applicable to the library were derived and based on this, the library healing environment evaluation was conducted for the librarians of public libraries. As a result of the study, the librarians expressed a positive perception of the healing environment in the library, and the physical environment of the healing environment was rated higher than the psychological and social environment. Therefore, the librarians need to raise the awareness of healing environment and strengthen professionalism in order to revitalize library healing environment. The librarians should offer the users the pleasant and comfortable and secure spaces. In addition, the library should provide a variety of healing programs by topic and user, and promote the fact that the library can perform the function of the therapeutic activity.

A Study on Healing Environment Design Elements in Commercial Space

Vol.17 No.6

(Background and Purpose) Due to the prolonged COVID-19 and continuous social distancing, restrictions on daily life have increased, leading more people to feel depressed or lethargic, and interest in ‘healing codes’ such as health and rest is increasing in order to escape from the feeling of helplessness and fatigue caused by COVID-19 and burnout. Therefore, it is important to consider the psychological situation of customers and their needs when planning a commercial space. In particular, in the case of urban entertainment center, visitors spend their leisure time consuming various spatial contents to satisfy their emotional and psychological needs, so there is a need for research related to it. Against the background, this study intends to examine the healing environment design subject to urban entertainment center. The research trend of healing environment design in the early stage in Korea was mostly hospital and patient-related studies. After 2009, as the trend of people-centered research became prominent, studies related to rest areas such as parks and forests, cultural arts, residential complexes, and leisure appeared, but there were significantly fewer studies on commercial space. Also, most of the research was about physical environment elements among the healing environment components. (Method) As a method of research, it first looks at the concept of healing and healing environment design through literature research as theoretical consideration, and considers the need for healing environment design in commercial space. Second, it presents healing environment design elements that can be applied to commercial Space. Third, based on it, a case analysis is conducted focusing on urban entertainment center in Korea to derive characteristics of each healing environment design element. Finally, it derives the characteristics of healing environment design in urban entertainment center in Korea by synthesizing case analysis focusing on analysis items. (Results) As a result of deriving the healing environment design elements of the commercial space, the aesthetic elements showed the characteristics with formative expressions and open space design, and the nature-friendly elements showed their characteristics with direct and indirect expressions in terms of physical environment. In terms of psychological environment, extraordinary elements showed the characteristics with event element and overscale expressions, and entertaining elements showed the characteristics with cultural and participatory experience. These elements can be expected to give users psychological and emotional stability and to help them escape from stress by providing a positive environment by drawing users' interest. (Conclusions) As a commercial space has been transformed into a new consumption space that gains value through experience, it has become an experiential space where various activities can be performed. The experience refreshes people's mood and plays a role of emotional recovery and plays a healing function. In order to create an environment for the commercial space that brings out such diverse and new experiences, it is necessary to comprehensively consider the physical and psychological environment to plan.

Vol.37 No.5

This study analyzed the healing effect of the design elements of healing environment from the perspective of environmental stress, which is one of the contents of environmental psychology. By examining the objective healing effects of the design elements of the healing environment, this study attempted to prepare a theoretical basis for contributing to the construction of a systematic and systematic healing environment. This study consists of three phases. Firstly, three environmental stress theories (Attention Recovery Theory, Evolutionary Psychology, and Environmental Stress Model) were examined to review the academic basis of which the theoretical concept of the healing environment has been derived and developed. Second, we analyzed 16 previous research on the design elements of healing environment and used them as an analysis framework of this study. Thirdly, 11 foreign studies that proved the healing effects of healing environment design elements through objective research methods were considered and analyzed as an analysis framework, and the basis for applying design elements in constructing healing environment was prepared. The research results are as follows. First, the concept of healing environment was developed from Lazarus's psychological stress theory and Ulrich's theory of evolutionary psychology, suggesting that it can be used as one of the noninvasive healing tools that affect stress reduction. Second, the healing environment design elements could be divided into 15 factors and categorized as physical environment, psychological environment, and social environment, and it was found that most of them were mentioned and studied in the previous research in order of nature-friendly, aesthetic, and openness. Third, most of the previous research on the healing effects of the design elements of the healing environment were related to natural affinity and aesthetics, and it was found that the visual elements of the healing environment could affect the actual stress reduction.

A Study on Public Design Applicability Through Extraction of Healing Environment Elements

Vol.12 No.5

(Background and Purpose) The paradigm of the urban environment is also shifting as it is undergoing rapid urbanization. In this process, various social problems are exposed, and the public space, emphasizing the functional aspect in the existing urban environment, has limitations in meeting the needs of the users. These problems led to increased interest in the psychological environment, and it has become an opportunity to recognize the need for an urban environment that meets user needs. The purpose of this study is to analyze the types of healing environments through preceding research and to propose the feasibility of their applications to public design through the extraction of healing environment elements based on the analysis. (Method) In Chapter 2, we theoretically examined the concept of the healing environment and the trends of the preceding research. In Chapter 3, we reconstructed the healing environment types through the analysis of preceding research. In Chapter 4, we derived concrete elements according to reclassified healing environment types, and conducted a comprehensive analysis. In Chapter 5, we presented the results of the research based on the preceding research. (Results) In the analysis of the preceding research, nine types of existing healing environments derived based on frequency were reclassified as physical environment, psychological environment, social environment, and behavioral environment. First, among the types of healing environments, the physical environment has objective and physical characteristics, and its concrete elements like pathfinding and accessibility have the same meaning as “accessibility” in public design evaluation items. Second, the psychological environment is an intrinsic factor. Concrete elements derived from this type of healing environment include privacy, comfort, habitability, and intimacy. Third, the social environment holds an objective and its related factors. Concrete elements derived from this type of healing environment include social interaction, communication, sociality, public sphere, system, regulation, and program. Fourth, the behavioral environment is an external factor, and its concrete elements include information exchange, environmental adaptability, and interaction. (Conclusions) Natural factors in the physical environment have an effect of providing psychological stability to the users which infers it is essential in obtaining healing effect of the users. In the psychological environment, it is found that psychological stability and healing concepts are applied by providing a space for users, based on the element of comfort. In the social and behavioral environments, it was found that creating the space where the community can be activated is highly important. This can be applied as a vital component in public design which emphasizes publicness. This study has its significance in recognizing the importance of the user-centered psychological environments in healing environments, and its value is in that it suggests the possibility of applying the elements of healing environments to public design.

This exploratory research examines a new approach to the healing environment in the changed health paradigm, and seeks to conceptualize the extended characteristics of the healing environment in the context of mental health promotion. This study aims to, first, define the concepts of health, mental health, and the healing environment in the changed paradigm, and second, develop the healing characteristics of the physical environment for mental health promotion and create indicators. For these purposes, this study performed a theoretical exploration that could support the concept of the healing environment for mental health promotion by expanding its scope into not only architecture, psychology, and psychiatry but also philosophy of architecture and environment psychology, which concerns the relationship between humans and the environment. This study considers related theories and attempts to establish a new concept from a convergent perspective. The characteristics of the healing environment categorized as a result of exploratory research on previous studies and theories include (a) physical protection promotion, (b) psychological comfort promotion, (c) social exchange promotion, and (d) personal self-esteem promotion. Establishing the concept of the healing environment for mental health promotion is important to implement the actual healing environment. Based on the concept, more specific design indicators and guidelines could be developed to conduct applied research.

Vol.16 No.1

(Background & Purpose) Contemporary society is burdened by excessive stress and mental and physical disorders along with the transition into an ultra-aging society. As a result, there has been a heightened interest in healing spaces. The healing space is a place for activities that seek to produce holistic healing, that is, physical, behavioral, and psychological healing, through actions engaging the human body and senses. This study was intended to present new possibilities and opportunities in the design of healing spaces by applying the elements of multi-sensory stimulation environment to create a healing space design that provides psychological comfort. (Method) First, this study defined the concept of healing and the multi-sensory stimulation environment based on theoretical considerations. Second, this study proposed an evaluation and analysis model by identifying the characteristics of spatial configuration and multi-sensory stimulation environment through consideration of preceding studies and literature in connection with healing space design elements and characteristics of multi-sensory stimulation environment. Third, this study analyzed the relationship between healing space design and multi-sensory stimulation environment by selecting advanced cases of elderly nursing homes and elderly housing in the healing space design through the analysis model, and examined the meaning of this study by verifying specific design elements and characteristics. (Results) Human dignity is a key component in determining quality of life and the importance given to protecting human dignity while designing contemporary spaces reflects the desire of contemporary people to pursue well-being. Research on healing space design should be continued to restore human dignity and create spaces that encourage human connection and easy communication. In this study, the multi-sensory stimulation environment elements were divided into extensibility, repetition, interrelationship, temporality, and immersion, while the environmental elements of healing space design were classified into physical, functional, cognitive, social, and psychological environmental elements. The results of analysis showed that most of the healing space design and characteristics of multi-sensory stimulation environment were well reflected, but natural environment elements were found to be still insufficient. (Conclusion) The healing design of the future should focus on well-being and posit the healing space as a healer that supports individuals in finding the meaning of life and expressing their emotions. Spatial design that improves the quality of life as a true healing space will be achieved when the elements necessary for healing space design and the characteristics of multi-sensory stimulation environment are evenly reflected. This researcher hopes that the results of this study would provide useful data for healing space design in the future.

Vol.15 No.7

(Research Background and Purpose) Rural area has life and emotions, including nature, and tourism activities using rural resources and various healing resources are possible. The recovery experience through tourism has a positive effect on tourism satisfaction and life satisfaction, and is shown to have a healing effect. However, there are no studies that have actually established spatial planning by reflecting the elements of the healing environment. Considering the perspectives of suppliers and consumers, residents' opinions should be reflected in a realistic operating dimension, and it is important to establish a spatial planning that reflects the needs of potential tourists in response to market changes. Therefore, in this study, a spatial planning of rural healing tourism was established by collecting opinions of stakeholders focusing on the elements of healing environment. (Research Method) The site of this study is A village in Gyeongnam, and the participatory design method was applied. To this end, first, the concept of rural healing tourism and the elements of healing environment were examined based on previous studies. Second, resource survey was discovered through field studies and FGI with residen. Third, the demand for preferred healing facilities and services was identified for potential rural healing tourists. Fourth, opinions on the spatial planning of rural healing tourism were collected from experts. (Analysis Results) The elements of the healing environment derived from previous studies were nature affinity, accessibility, independence, safety, comfort, openness, social exchange, and aesthetics. In this study, a spatial planning was established for lodging facilities, restaurants, air space, water healing space, healing garden, flower tea cafe, pavilion rest space, and tracking information board. As a result of establishing a spatial planning by reflecting the elements of healing environment in each facility, safety and nature-friendliness were generally reflected in the healing facility, followed by comfort and accessibility. (Conclusion) In this study, safety, nature-friendliness, comfort, and accessibility were mainly reflected in the establishment of a spatial planning of rural healing tourism derived through participation of stakeholders and collecting opinions. This suggests that it is more important to provide a natural, safe, and comfortable space than aesthetics in a healing environment. Research on the establishment of spatial planning reflecting the elements of the healing environment is still insufficient. With this study as an opportunity, research on spatial planning for rural healing tourism needs to be conducted more actively, and in particular, practical ways to increase the healing effect through spatial design applying the elements of healing environment and participatory design methods should be sought.

Analysis of Electroencephalogram and Electrocardiogram Changes in Adults in National Healing Forests Environment

Vol.21 No.6

This study analyzed the changes in Electroencephalogram(EEG) and Electrocardiogram(ECG) depending on the healing environment in order to find a way to improve the forest healing program based on the healing environment in response to the demand for qualitative improvement of the program since the program is a charged service. This study selected eight sites running forest healing programs at four national healing forests (i.e., Saneum, Cheongtaesan, Daegwanryeng, and Jangseong) - two routes per national healing forest - considering forest environments. This study chose NUMBER standard sampling plots (20×20m) and measured three atmospheric environment items, seven physical environment items, two soil environment items, and eight vegetation environment items including forest sound and anion at each plot to evaluate physiological changes in it. EEG and ECG, which have been widely used in forest healing evaluation, were utilized as criteria. Seventy three subjects were selected with taking the age, drug, caffeine, smoking, and the time of last meal into consideration. As a result, EEG changes were correlated with three atmospheric environment items, six physical environment items, one soil environment item, and two vegetation environment items. ECG changes were significantly correlated with two atmospheric environment items, six physical environment items, two soil environment items, and two vegetation environment items (p<.05). It is expected that 11 environmental factors such as temperature, density, and altitude affecting EEG (e.g., alpha balance and gamma balance) and ECG (e.g., HRV mean) could be used as effective tools in developing more differentiated programs for improving healing effects.

Vol.43 No.2

As concerns for health increase, health-seeking tourists’ activities are increasing globally. In Korea, health-seeking activities based on nature have also increased significantly. To grasp this social phenomenon, therefore, this study delves into tourists’ healing psychology through empirical analysis focusing on tourists’ mindfulness, healing restorative environment, and the impacts on quality of life for participants in a nature-based healing program. This study found that healing tourists visiting “Forest Healing” ultimately improved their quality of life through their participation in the healing program. In detail, the higher the level of mindfulness, the greater the influence on nature emotional control, the healing restorative environment perception, and the greater the influence on attention restoration through healing restorative environment perception. Additionally, healing restorative environment perception and attention restoration influence on program satisfaction, and program satisfaction increased tourists’ quality of life. However, nature emotional control did not directly influence program satisfaction, but it indirectly influenced it through healing restorative environment perception. The results prove healing restorative environment is a very significant part in finding out the relations among tourists’ mindfulness, healing restorative environment, and the impacts on quality of life.
