Vol.18 No.2

This study attempted to investigate hair and scalp care attitudes through self-diagnosis. The following research problems were examined to suggest a direction for hair and scalp care and for use as basic data for home care suggestions. First, the demographic characteristics of subjects were analyzed. Second, hair and scalp care self-diagnosis was examined. Third, demographic characteristics by hair and scalp care self-diagnosis were investigated. Fourth, differences in care attitude by self-diagnosis were examined. For empirical analysis on the purpose of the study, women living in Seoul were examined from November 1 to 20, 2016. The results found the following: First, hair and scalp care attitudes are comprised of four elements: interpersonal relationships, psychological stability, conspicuous consumption and hygienic management. Second, according to hair and scalp care self-diagnosis, ‘good scalp condition’ was higher than ‘poor scalp condition.’ Third, in terms of hair and scalp care attitudes by age, high scores were found in 20s, 30s and 50s and older in interpersonal relationships. From a hygienic management standpoint, a significant difference was found in those in their 20s and 50s and older. In terms of marital status, ‘married’ revealed outstanding results from the perspective of interpersonal relationships. In terms of occupation, a significant difference was observed in hygienic management. For home care through self-diagnosis, it is necessary to use hair products or to color hair or perm properly. To have a better look, in addition, it is necessary to use related products such as hair treatment packs. Since these products include chemicals, however, they could cause some harm to the scalp. Therefore, it is necessary not to use these products too much and to keep the scalp clean and healthy through their proper use and through scalp massage.

Vol.20 No.2

In modern times, scalp and hair damage has risen due to various causes such as stress, environmental pollution and dietary habits. As a result, people have shown more interest in having a healthy scalp and hair, and at the same time, their perception of scalp and hair care has increased. So far, hair cosmetology has concentrated on hairstyling such as coloring, bleaching, perm and haircut. With an emergence of the need for scalp & hair care for healthy hair and hairstyles, however, there has been a paradigm shift from hairstyling to hair care. This study performed a questionnaire survey on the perception of scalp and hair and the care patterns for these among college women majoring in cosmetology and other fields and analyzed differences to help them have a better understanding of customers’ scalp and hair and enhance customer satisfaction by suggesting effective scalp & hair care methods. According to the survey, scalp and hair perception was high in both those majoring in cosmetology and non-cosmetology-major students. However, the latter was less aware of the fact that scalp and hair can be damaged if hair is braided too tightly or too often, and that median scalp massage is helpful in scalp & hair care. In addition, scalp & hair care was high in college women majoring in cosmetology with a statistically significant difference. Based on the above results, it is necessary to help people gain a correct understanding of scalp and hair and suggest proper scalp and hair care methods.

Vol.8 No.3

The interest on scalp and hair is increasing even among men as well as women. Men's active efforts to have healthy scalp, attractive hair are increasing and not just simply regard the problem of scalp·hair such as hair loss, and relevant market shows increased growth. Thus, this study verified the gap between awareness and reality on the importance of caring for scalp·hair by examining the awareness on scalp·hair on men through surveys. Further, it was hoped that the study will have positive effects on the attitude of men on caring for scalp·hair, marketing techniques and treatment for relevant industry. The results showed that the interest on scalp·hair care for men in Gangnam, Seoul were high but it was discovered that the interest did not lead to actual treatment or care. These resulted in the need for increasing interests and knowledge on scalp·hair before actual treatment or care based on the fact that many respondents were not aware of the nature of own scalp·hair. Lastly, the costs for caring scalp·hair were relatively lower unlike other caring for appearances such as plastic surgery, skin care. It is why the industry needs to consider about rationalizing the costs for treatment to make scalp·hair industry to become more popular.
