Rhododendron molle G. Don, an endemic species of the Ericaceae family, possesses valuable medicinal and horticultural values. In this research, R. molle cp genome proved to be a typical quadripartite structure with the length of 200,878 bp. In particular, the lengths of large single-copy region (LSC), small single-copy region (SSC), and inverted repeat regions (IR) were 198,019 bp, 629 bp, and 1117 bp, respectively. Among the 149 unique genes, 97 were protein-coding genes, 44 were tRNA genes, and 8 were rRNA genes, respectively. Leucine was the most representative amino acid (10.663%), while Cysteine was the lowest representative (1.178%). A set of 30 codons showed obvious codon usage bias, while 29 were A/U-ending codons. Six gene regions showed high levels of nucleotide diversity (Pi > 0.02). Totally, 273 SSRs were identified. Maximum-likelihood (ML) phylogenetic analysis revealed that R. molle was relatively closed to the R. pulchrum and R. delavayi. High similarity was detected among Ericaceae species, and the coding regions were more conserved than the non-coding regions. Expansion and contraction detected in IR region could be the main length variation in R. molle and related Ericaceae species. This research will supply rich genetic resource for R. molle and related species of Ericaceae.

A new species of the genus Agonopterix Hübner (Lepidoptera: Depressariidae), A. asebiella Arashima, Yagi & Hirowatari sp. nov., has been described in Japan. Images of the imagoes and the male and female genitalia and partial details of the biology are provided with similar species for comparison.

This study was conducted for clarifying distribution and characteristics of marshy Ericaceae plants on Mt. Changbai in China. The marshy Ericaceae plants in wetland of Mt. Changbai were investigated on about 1400 m altitude. This region is various developmental wetlands and vegetation mixture of needle-leaf trees and broad-leaf trees. This region also is start point of the coniferous forest zone in Mt. Changbai. As results of these researches, L. palustre var. diversipilosum and L. palustre var. decumbens populations were investigated in Larix olgensis var. amurensis community. R. lapponicum subsp. parvifolium var. parvifolium community appeared as a typical community. Environmental conditions of L. palustre var. diversipilosum and L. palustre var. decumbens populations`` habitats are more soil humidity and shade condition. R. lapponicum subsp. parvifolium var. parvifolium community habitat, however, has more deposits and humidity condition. Therefore when the plants were cultivated, we should recognize the growth condition such as maintenance of humidity and control deposits. The flora of marshy Ericaceae species habitats was investigated as 28 families, 49 genera, 45 species, 14 variety, 1 forma, 1 sub-species, and total 61 taxa.

The investigation was made about distribution and ecological characteristics of Rhododendron mucronulatum var. mucronulatum, R. dauricum and R. schlippenbachii on Mt. Changbai in China. The Ericaceae plants are known to be highly ornamental and easy to cultivate. The results of investigations are like followings. The plant species diversity was the highest in habitats of R. mucronulatum var. mucronulatum, followed by those of R. schlippenbachii and R. dauricum. R. mucronulatum var. mucronulatum community was found in the northwest exposure areas of 300m in altitude. Corylus heterophylla, Carex humilis var. nana, Atractylodes japonica species also grew in the R. mucronulatum var. mucronulatum community. R. dauricum communities were widely distributed in the west exposure areas of 1226-1860m above sea level. R. schlippenbachii populations were found in areas of under 300m above sea level, which has dry soil. But humidity of air was relatively high in the place. Artemisia japonica, Lespedeza bicolor and Dactylis glomerata were found around the habitats of R. schlippenbachii. Phalanx type of plants were dominant near the habitats of Ericaceae plants as 61%. Further, there appeared higher plant life totalling to 72taxa comprising 54 species, 16 varieties and 2 forma with 31 families and 59 genuses at the whole survey area. Among these, Compositae plants excellent in resistance to environment was surveyed the most, accounting for 30.0%.

A fungal strain was isolated from surface-sterilized roots of Rhododendron mucronulatum, a plant species belonging to the Ericaceae family, collected from Mt. Minjujisan, Korea. This fungal strain was identified as Rhizodermea veluwensis based on its morphological characteristics and based on phylogenetic analysis of its internal transcribed spacer regions and large-subunit rDNA. R. veluwensis has not been previously reported in Korea, and for the first time, we report and describe it herein.

To identify an analgesic/anti-inflammatory component from the leaves of Rhododendron aureum (Ericaceae), phytochemical isolation and pharmacological assays (writhing assays and vascular permeability assay for analgesic action in mice; carrageenan-induced paw edemaand TPA-induced ear edema assays of anti-inflammatory action in rats) were performed. Four compounds were isolated from the active fraction (BuOH fraction) by silica gel column chromatography and identified as (-)-rhododendrol, (-)-rhododendrin, avicularin and hyperoside by spectroscopic methods. Rhododendrin, the main compound of the BuOH fraction, exhibited significant analgesic actions in mice and anti-inflammatory actions in rats. This compound accounted for 3.1% of the MeOH extract and 0.48% of dried leaves, respectively, on HPLC analysis. These results suggest that rhododendrin is the major biologically active substance in the leaves of R. aureum with analgesic/anti-inflammatory activity.

Three compounds were isolated from the twigs of Vaccinium oldhami (Ericaceae) through repeated column chromatography. Their chemical structures were elucidated as taraxerol, scopoletin, and proanthocyanidin A-2 by spectroscopic analysis respectively. Among these compounds, scopoletin and proanthocyanidin showed cytotoxic activities against human cancer cell lines(A549, SK-OV-3, SK-MEL-2, and HCT15).

Nineteen polymorphic microsatellite loci are described for Rhododendron aureum Georgi (Ericaceae), an endangered species in Korea, and the closely related Rhododendron brachycarpum. The sequences containing repeat motifs were identified using low-depth next generation sequencing and 148 microsatellite loci were examined for amplification success and the detection of polymorphisms. All 19 loci were polymorphic and the number of alleles for these markers varied from 4 to 25, with an average of 15 alleles per locus. Three R. aureum loci showed departure from Hardy-Weinberg equilibrium (HWE) and one R. brachycarpum locus deviated significantly from HWE. These microsatellite loci will be useful for investigating the genetic diversity and population structure of both species.

The Rhododendron powdery mildew fungus Erysiphe izuensis has been recorded throughout Asia, including China, Japan, Korea, and Russia. In Korea, E. izuensis has been identified based on morphological characteristics of the anamorph found on introduced Rhododendron spp. We here describe the first identification of E. izuensis collected from Rhododendron yedoense f. poukhanense in Korea. Morphological characteristics of the teleomorph as well as internal transcribed spacer sequences of the species are provided. Moreover, we describe the characteristics of the primary conidia and conidial surface pattern of E. izuensis for the first time.
The Chemical Constituents and their Antioxidant Activity of the Stem of Rhododendron mucronulatum

From the n-BuOH soluble fraction of the 70% aqueous acetone extract of Rhododendronmucronulatum stem, twelve compounds were isolated. On the basis of spectral data, they were identified asscopoletin (1), (+)-taxifolin (2), quercetin (3), ()-catechin (4), (+)-epicatechin (5), scopolin (6), lyoniside (7),ssioriside (8), fraxin (9), (+)-lyoniresinol-3α-O-β-D-glucopyranoside (10), (+)-taxifolin-3-O-α-L-arabinopyranoside(11), and astragalin (12), respectively. All isolated compounds were tested antioxidant activity against 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl (DPPH) radical. Compounds 2 and 3 showed the potent antioxidant activity, andcompounds 5, 8, and 11 showed moderate activity.
