Vol.16 No.6

Artificial lighting accounts for a significant portion of the energy use in office buildings. Therefore, daylighting is considered one of the fundamental design features of energy-efficient buildings. However, complex daylighting simulation tools are not suitable for most designers to help in the decision-making process. This paper provides the results of a simulation analysis to determine the potential energy savings of daylighting effects reducing electrical energy consumption for office building. A whole building simulation tool is used to determine the effects of daylighting on lighting electricity use as well as total electricity use for typical office buildings. It was determined that daylighting does not provide significant additional lighting energy savings when glass transmittance is increased over 0.7. A simplified method is developed based on the analysis results to estimate the annual electrical energy savings attributed to daylighting.

Vol.9 No.2

The purpose of this study is to propose some alternatives for securing a right of light for units within the high-rise residential building complex. Through the literature review, national building codes on the right of light are investigated and both natural daylighting and lighting techniques using equipments are studied. Supposing that a natural daylighting system is a possible alternative to bring daylight into the building, several methods to secure the right of light for buildings in high-rise building complex are proposed through the shadow analysis of different building arrangement, The results of study are as follows; For the shaded areas for the units of lower part of building that is located on the northern part of complex, reflecting mirror can be introduced. Solar radiation area (diffuse light) per unit area of the reflecting mirror is about 20-25m2 and transmission efficiency is about 75%. Regardless of the amount of sunlight, the units of facing north direction is completely excluded from sunlight, but natural daylight can be introduced through the use of reflecting mirror or light duct. For enclosed core spaces without windows to outside, the light pipe equipments from the top floor are effective solutions for daylighting. The enclosed spaces within units can bring daylight with light cable. With the effect of ultraviolet light for interior space, many side effects like sterilization and dehumidification can be obtained.

Perimeter block housing has been implemented in various new town development in Korea since 2000 as an alternative urban housing type as verse to high-rise development mostly common in urban residential areas. Perimeter blocks are relatively new built forms in Korea and considered more inferior in natural daylighting to free-standing buildings. Natural light is one of the most important amenities to insure inhabitable residential spaces, and perimeter block housing has to be carefully designed in consideration of natural daylighting. The objective of this research is to develop a design methodology of Perimeter block housing with the optimization of natural daylighting satisfying Rights to light. The case of Eunpyung Newtown is analyzed extensively in order to define the principles of solar shading and daylighting in Seoul. The result shows that the minimum distances between perimeter block housing, south-north=1.8h, east-west=0.7h, need to be satisfied in order to meet minium two hours of daylighting for the livingroom windows facing south or east. In addition, The minium distance between the buildings at each 15° azimuth angle is calculated based on the daylighting simulation. Azimuth angle 45°, 60°,?30°, and -45° are turned out to be the optimum azimuth angle. The design explorations are implemented to the preliminary massing of perimeter block housing using the principles of south-north=1.8h for closed blocks and the principles of minium distances between the buildings at various azimuth angle for open blocks with tower. The simulations are verified that the design alternatives meet the standard of Rights to light and the high Floor Area Ratio(FAR).

We developed a parabolic reflector based daylighting system which can be used as an alternative indoor daytime lighting device such as for fluorescent lamps. The system comprises three main components:a daylight concentrator made of 4 pairs of parabolic reflectors and mirrors, a silica optical fiber bundle based light transmitter, and 4 light diffusers for the final indoor delivery of the collected daylight. We analyzed the performance of the system and revealed the system efficiency and daylighting factor. All test methods follow the rule, NR PV601:2007-daylighting system, governed by Korea Energy Management Corporation.

Vol.9 No.5

Daylighting in educational environment is very important as it has an effect on students' performance as well as in their visual health. It is regarded as a good energy conservation method in saving energy used for lighting. This study conducted initial daylight measurements to analyze luminous environment in classrooms of Korean elementary school. The results indicated that the typical classroom had a reasonable level of daylight. However, it also found that the classroom had some problems of the uniformity of illuminance and the contrast of brightness of surfaces in the classroom. It is argued that daylighting design for school classroom should consider these aspects to make daylit classrooms ideal so as to provide comfortable visual environment.

Optical Characteristics and Applicability of a Fiber-optic Hybrid Daylighting System Exploiting Sunlight and Artificial Light

Vol.24 No.2

Purpose: Using sunlight and artificial light for illuminating indoor spaces (dimlit areas) was studied by operating a fiber-optic hybrid daylighting system capable of delivering constant flux of visible light streams, which enables the implementation of constant lighting despite the variation in sunlight during daytime. Method: The system adds artificial light to a stream of sunlight when there is deficiency in sunlight to meet the target illuminance according to the feedback signal generated by the photo-sensor based control strategy developed in this work. The photometric characteristics of the mixed stream of sunlight and artificial light were analyzed and the applicability of the system was tested under actual operating conditions. Spectrum variations of light were measured and analyzed to investigate the validity of light mixing, i.e., hybrid daylighting. Besides its photometry, the control of illuminance in hybrid daylighting was explored by using a test cell on a clear and a partly cloudy day. Result: Results are presented in terms of photometric properties including spectral radiance and illuminance measured as appropriate. The mixing (adding) of artificial light to meet the target illuminance was quite successful and the illuminance remained close to the desired value within an allowable tolerance of ±3.5%.

Optical Fiber Daylighting System Combined with LED Lighting and CPV based on Stepped Thickness Waveguide for Indoor Lighting

2016 Current Optics and Photonics Vol.20 No.4

We present a design and optical simulation of a cost-effective hybrid daylighting/LED system composedof mixing sunlight and light-emitting diode (LED) illumination powered by renewable solar energy forindoor lighting. In this approach, the sunlight collected by the concentrator is split into visible andnon-visible rays by a beam splitter. The proposed sunlight collector consists of a Fresnel lens array. Thenon-visible rays are absorbed by the solar photovoltaic devices to provide electrical power for the LEDs. The visible rays passing through the beam splitters are coupled to a stepped thickness waveguide (STW)by tilted mirrors and confined by total internal reflection (TIR). LEDs are integrated at the end of theSTW to improve the lighting quality. LEDs’ light and sunlight are mixed in the waveguide and they arecoupled into an optical fiber bundle for indoor illumination. An optical sensor and lighting control systemare used to control the LED light flow to ensure that the total output flux for indoor lighting is a fixedvalue when the sunlight is inadequate. The daylighting capacity was modeled and simulated with acommercial ray tracing software (LighttoolsTM). Results show that the system can achieve 63.8% opticalefficiency at geometrical concentration ratio of 630. A required accuracy of sun tracking system achievedmore than ±0.5o. Therefore, our results provide an important breakthrough for the commercialization oflarge scale optical fiber daylighting systems that are faced with challenges related to high costs.
