Vol.12 No.3

The purpose of this study is to academically investigate how K-pop cover dance activity is closely related with improvement in physical expression ability of various emotions. Emotion that people can feel are classified into 6 major emotions and 18 detailed emotions. This study selected and charted internal characteristics of each emotion and body movements that commonly appear on face, hand, arm, leg and body when each emotion appears on the outside. This study created "BESS emotion model" that represents a relationship between emotion and physical expression mode of the emotion by classifying into Body, Effort, Shape and Space categories according to the Bess Movement Analysis Theory of LMA(Laban Movement Analysis). The study empirically analyzed K-pop dance point movements using the established ‘BESS emotion model.’ 18 K-pop dance song that contain 18 detailed emotions in lyrics were selected and compared point dance moves with ‘BESS emotion model.’ It was identified that emotions contained lyrics and body movements that express the emotion are consistent with the‘BESS emotion model.’ ‘BESS emotion model’ that shows which movement needs to be taken when expressing a certain emotion is expected to be used as an academic basis for K-pop dance education in school for growing children, learning K-pop cover dance in various culture center and dance academy and development of K-pop dance choreography.

Vol.4 No.1

Recently, endeavors for recognizing human emotion from full body movements. Especially, dance which is close to common human motions that are the most typical of expressing human emotion, have been made. Korean dance includes Korean peculiar emotion, which discriminates Korean dance from Western dance. Therefore, the unique method for analyzing and recognizing emotion from Korean dance has been strongly required. To the best of our knowledge, there is no method for recognizing emotion from korean dance in the literature. In this thesis, we propose a method for recognizing emotion from Korean dance and analyzing Korean dance using the recognition results. The method consists of four steps. First, dance performances associated with pre-defined emotions are extracted from several representative Korean dances based on professional dancers' qualitative analysis and danced by professional dancers. Second, the dance performances are captured using multiple cameras and quantitative features associated with dance performances are extracted from the camera images using a series of image processing algorithms. Furthermore, the features are analysed by ICA(independent Coponent Analysis) more useful than PCA(Principle Component Analysis).Third, the mapping between the dance performances and the pre-defined emotions is estimated using neural network. Finally, given arbitrary dance performances, their corresponding emotions are recognized using the neural network. Thus, the purpose of this thesis is extracting sequential emotional patterns of Korean dance using the emotion recognition method. and proposing a criterion for specifying the characteristics of Korean dance quantitatively. The quantitative analysis can concrete the results of the existing researches on understanding the characteristics of Korean dance depend only on the qualitative analysis. We expect that this thesis provides a systematic framework for understanding the characteristics of the whole Korean dance through the qualitative and quantitative analysis of some representative Korean dances.

Vol.0 No.39

This study examined the relation between exercise addiction and emotion in 165 adolescents who were participating inr dance club activities, and drew conclusions as follows. First, with regard to the relation between exercise addiction and the pattern of participation in dance club activities, according to experience in dance club, exercise addiction was significantly more frequent in adolescents with dance experience of `three years or longer` than in those with experience of `less than a year.` According to satisfaction with participation, exercise addiction was significantly more frequent in adolescents who replied `Very satisfied` than in those who replied `Little satisfied`, According to experience in dance competitions, exercise addiction was significantly more frequent in adolescents who participated in dance competitions `three times or more a year` than in those without experience in dance competitions. Second, with regard to the relation between emotional difference and the pattern of participation in dance club activities, according to experience in dance club activities, emotional difference was larger in those with dance experience of `1~3 years` but the difference was not statistically significant. According to satisfaction with participation, emotional difference was significantly larger in adolescents who replied `So-so` than in those who replied `Very satisfied` and according to experience in dance competitions or presentations, emotional difference was significantly larger in adolescents without such experience than in those who participated in dance competitions or presentations `once or twice a year` or `three times or more a year.` Third, in the results of multiple regression on adolescents` addiction to dance club activities and their emotion, a high correlation was observed between addiction and emotion. In addition, exercise addiction appeared to have explanatory power to emotion, and emotion was affected significantly by the sub-factors of addiction `focus on health,` `strong desire,` `withdrawal symptom,` and `interpersonal relation` in their order. With the transition of dance culture over time, adolescents are participating in various dances voluntarily and actively, and creating adolescent-specific cultural society that is even contributing to the globalization of Korean culture. Because excessive absorption and addiction may have a harmful effect on emotion, however, guidance is required for adolescents` participation in dance activities.

      • How is Youth`s Emotion Cultivated in Dance Education? : An Exploratory Study

Vol.2016 No.1

Purpose: As emotional problems of youth are getting serious, there has been a growing interest in developing youth’s emotion. However, most of research and programs have focused on the cognitive aspects of emotion and dealt with special populations of youth with behavior problems. In this context, this study is an exploratory study investigating the cultivation of emotion in general youth populations. The purposes of this study are to identify positive emotional experiences of youth in dance education and explore the factors that contribute to the cultivation of youth’s emotion. Research questions are as follows: (a) What are the positive emotional experiences of youth in dance education?, (b) What are the factors that have a positive impact on youth’s emotion? Method: Qualitative research method was conducted for this study. Participants were 16 to 22 years old students (n=20, 9 males and 11 females) who were engaged in dance education lessons. Data were collected by open-ended questionnaires, non-participant observations, and in-depth interviews. Data were analyzed inductively and trustworthiness of data was enhanced through member checks and peer debriefing. Result: Two aspects of youth’s emotional experiences . personal and interpersonal emotions - were classified. The personal emotion included an immediate and instinctive sense of feelings (e.g. pleasure, excitement, and happiness, etc.) and complicated combination of those feelings (e.g. a sense of fulfillment, confidence, and self-examination, etc.). The interpersonal emotion was shown in terms of various layers from empathy with others to a sense of consideration, faith, and duty toward others. There were three main factors promoting youth’s emotional cultivation. Diverse narrative contents, songs, movies, readings, writings, and discussions, with dance techniques enriched youth’s emotional experiences. In addition, appropriate teachers’ indirect teaching behavior and positive interactions with classmates played a crucial role in contributing to the cultivation of youth’s emotion. Conclusion: Dance education can be seen as essential for cultivating youth’s emotion. Furthermore, youth’s emotional cultivation (e.g. caring, cooperation, and responsibility) is closed to character development. For the further research, it will be needed to study the roles of teachers and foundations of dance education programs in order to maximize positive youth’s emotional experiences.

Vol.65 No.-

The purpose of this study is to explore ways to apply emotional marketing in dance marketing, in order to overcome the limitation of conventional marketing and to switch potential audiences to real audiences in dance. The conventional marketing is only for audiences who are interest in dance, without pursuing profits in dance art. Therefore, this study suggests emotional marketing strategies after researching and analyzing the current condition of dance marketing. This emotional marketing is divided into 3 parts, which are sensitive marketing, cultural marketing, and impressive marketing. Emotional marketing is actively applied in dance festivals, and people use experience marketing in outdoor performances by drawing friendly reaction toward dance performance. Other marketing strategies expect emotional marketing to use posters which are not tried in dance contests, so it is urgent to develop new marketing strategies for ordinary people who will be new audience in dance world, in order to overcome the limitation of performance only for dance majors. Emotional marketing shares an area with art in stimulating people`s emotion. It could display its real worth when it is combined with dance performance. Also, it is necessary to develop a long-term strategy which could enhance more relations with dance art. This does not mean promoting temporary effect, which just includes the elements of the emotional marketing. Rather, this should be related with experience marketing such as dance education. This could influence positively on the development of the arts expressing people`s inner side as well as dance performance.

Vol.33 No.3

The purpose of this study is to investigate the impact of Korean dance on emotional intelligence and social development by educating upper grade elementary students in insular areas who are experiencing dance classes for the first time. The research questions selected are 1. What level of differences in emotional intelligence does Korean dance make for upper grade elementary students in insular regions? and 2. What level of differences in sociability does Korean dance make for upper grade elementary students in insular regions? The subjects of the study were two classes of fourth grade elementary students in insular areas of Wando-gun, Jeollanam-do, and both classes were new to dance, and the experimental group took Korean dance classes under the name of ‘ Encountering the Dance’ once a week for 40 minutes while the comparative group took dance classes once a were for 40 minutes under the theme ‘ Playing with the Dance’ . The class was conducted by the same dance instructor, and the questionnaire was first given out before the dance class began, and handed out to students again eight weeks after the dance class was over. As a result of the study, it was found that the sub-areas of emotional intelligence (emotional perception, emotional expression, ability to control emotions, and empathy) of the experimental group, which took Korean dance classes, all rose, showing a positive effect. In addition, in the sub-areas of the sociality index (reliability, autonomy, domination, diligence, service, stability, sociability, and compliance), there were significant differences in the sub-factors, excluding stability. In the comparative group, there was a significant difference in emotional recognition factors in the emotional intelligence index, and for the sociability index of the comparative group, there was no significant difference except for diligence. The results of this study suggest that first, dance and art education should be universal, something anyone can experience and share. Second, systematic and planned Korean dance education programs can positively change emotions and socialization for students. In other words, a universal and systematic dance education, dance education programs utilizing the collective activities of Korean dance, and the composition and expression methods of folk dances have a very significant educational effect, so dance education should be conducted while the development of education programs for various ages continues.
