사이버 카니발로서의 대규모 다중 사용자 온라인 역할 수행 게임에 관한 고찰

MMORPG의 강력한 몰입감은 사용자들의 상호작용에 기반을 둔다. 따라서 MMORPG를 즐기는 것은 단순히 온라인 게임놀이를 뛰어 넘는 문화적 활동을 의미한다. 본 논문에서는 MMORPG의 집단 문화 활동을 중세 시대에 성행하였던 카니발의 문화적 특징과 비교고찰 하였다. 중세 카니발은 신분적으로 불공평한 사회의 완충욕구에서 비롯되었다. 카니발에 대한 인간의 집단 무의식은 사회전반의 틀을 지키고, 강력한 공동체적 의식을 결성하기 위한 인간 삶의 원초적 집단문화 형태인 것이다. 중세와 디지털시대라는 시대적 대척점에도 불구하고, 의미적 유사성을 지니는 카니발의 시공간과 MMORPG의 사이버시공간은 인간의 무의식적 욕망의 자발성에 근원하는 공통점을 가지고 있다. 산업화가 진행되면서 현실과 상상의 양가성을 실현하는 시공간으로서의 카니발은 더 이상 불필요한 것으로 여겨져 왔다. 그러나 인간 심층의식에서의 카니발적인 욕구는 여전히 살아 있었으며 기술이 매개가 되어 재탄생한 것이 MMORPG임을 본 연구를 통해 알 수 있었다 MMORPG's strong flow is based on the interaction of each users. Therefore playing MMORPG is the means of cultural activities far beyond enjoying a simple online game. In this paper, MMORPG's collective cultural activities are studied and are compared with prevalent carnival in the middle ages. The medieval carnival aroused from desire for the social buffer. The primitive human collective unconsciousness of the carnival can experience ambivalent world so that keeping the order of inequity social stratum has been kept and the whole strong sense of community has been fulfilled. In spite of era difference between the medieval age and the digital age, both the Carnival and the MMORPG essentially need the spontaneity of unconscious desire. Achieving ambivalent space and ambivalent time ,which are in between the real world and the imaginary world, are not regarded no longer as necessary as industrialization being progressed. However, the carnival is still alive in the deep sense of human needs in present day. Through this study, MMORPG is the new way of participating on a carnival which is reborn by mediating newer digital theology.
