Vol.43 No.5

The popularity of cosmetic procedures has increased over the past decade. Korean consumers have shown different levels of demand for the two types of cosmetic procedures (surgical and nonsurgical). This study examines the effect of appearance pressure from family, friends, and social media on the internalization and face/ body satisfaction that can determine the levels of acceptance for each cosmetic procedure among young Korean females. Data was collected from 379 females in their 20s and 30s, using an online survey questionnaire. Statistical analysis were performed using SPSS 24.0 and AMOS. The results indicated that only social media pressure significantly influenced young women's internalization of attractive appearance. Internalization was negatively associated with face and body satisfaction. Face satisfaction was negatively related to the acceptance of cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures; however, body satisfaction was not related to the acceptance of cosmetic surgical and nonsurgical procedures. This study highlights the significant importance of social media and its powerful impact on developing young women's body image perceptions.

The most common complications of lasers and light based treatment include burns, blister, hyper/hypopigmentation and scarring. The filler may show infection, vessel occlusion and necrosis as severe side effects. Objectives: To investigate adverse effects in cosmetic procedures. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed medical records of patients who showed adverse effects after cosmetic procedures and visited our clinic between 2011 and 2016. Results: In 2 patients treated with IPL, one showed hypopigmentation and one complained burn. A female patient presented with keloid scar on her abdomen after CO2 treatment for seborrheic keratosis. Among 11 cases of side effects after filler injection, 10 female showed a nodular lesion on their faces and one patient presented with erythematous patch and pustules on her face. Lastly, a female patient who had a history of fat transplantation on her right parietal area of scalp showed hair loss. Conclusion: The concern about cosmetic procedures has been focused mainly on how we can use it effectively to patients in terms of treatment outcomes. Every clinician should fully aware of associated complication of aesthetic intervention before beginning treatment, followed by close follow-up and appropriate treatment.

Vol.26 No.3

This study sheds light on the phenomenon of how modern society is linked to the role of advertisements based on the discourse analysis of reviews of cosmetic procedures posted on the online community. The analysis conducted based on move structure and discourse function. The move structure of the data involved (a) the title, (b) explaining the motivation for undergoing the cosmetic procedure, (c) explaining the options for the solution and the reason why s/he chose it, (d) reporting the process and progress, (e) explaining the result, and (f) encouragement for the readers. In addition, for the discourse functions, there are (a) Evaluation, (b) Interpretation, (c) Request, (d) Advising, (e) Promising, (f) Thanking, (g) Congratulating, and (h) Sympathizing. In the section of media discourse analysis based on the Fairclough"s approach, this paper covered the dimension of ‘text’, ‘discourse practice’, and ‘sociocultural practice’. For the text analysis, this study analyzed the text based on the ‘representation of the world’, ‘identities’, and ‘relations’. After this analysis, this paper discovered how the late modernity and self-identity and text can be interactive with each other, under two topics: “truth and commitment in pure relationships” and “the influence of ‘mediated experience’ in terms of options of lifestyle”. In the early modern age, the relations between producer and consumer of discourse could be a pure relationship based on truth, sympathy, and reliability; but there was a risk that this relationship and the discourse could be manipulated by certain interest groups. Therefore, many interest groups have intervened into the discourse with some of their own disguised information.

The branching patterns and termination points of the facial artery: a cadaveric anatomical study

Vu Hoang Nguyen,Lin Cheng-Kuan,Tuan Anh Nguyen,Trang Huu Ngoc Thao Cai 대한두개안면성형외과학회 2024 Archives of Craniofacial Surgery Vol.25 No.2

Background: The facial artery is an important blood vessel responsible for supplying the anterior face. Understanding the branching patterns of the facial artery plays a crucial role in various medical specialties such as plastic surgery, dermatology, and oncology. This knowledge contributes to improving the success rate of facial reconstruction and aesthetic procedures. However, debate continues regarding the classification of facial artery branching patterns in the existing literature. Methods: We conducted a comprehensive anatomical study, in which we dissected 102 facial arteries from 52 embalmed and formaldehyde-fixed Vietnamese cadavers at the Anatomy Department, University of Medicine and Pharmacy, Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Results: Our investigation revealed eight distinct termination points and identified 35 combinations of branching patterns, including seven arterial branching patterns. These termination points included the inferior labial artery, superior labial artery, inferior alar artery, lateral nasal artery, angular artery typical, angular artery running along the lower border of the orbicularis oculi muscle, forehead branch, duplex, and short course (hypoplastic). Notably, the branching patterns of the facial artery displayed marked asymmetry between the left and right sides within the same cadaver. Conclusion: The considerable variation observed in the branching pattern and termination points of the facial artery makes it challenging to establish a definitive classification system for this vessel. Therefore, it is imperative to develop an anatomical map summarizing the major measurements and geometric features of the facial artery. Surgeons and medical professionals involved in facial surgery and procedures must consider the detailed anatomy and relative positioning of the facial artery to minimize the risk of unexpected complications.

Managing Complications in Abdominoplasty: A Literature Review

Vidal, Pedro,Berner, Juan Enrique,Will, Patrick A. Korean Society of Plastic and Reconstructive Surge 2017 Archives of Plastic Surgery Vol.44 No.5

Background Abdominoplasty, with or without liposuction, is among the most frequently performed aesthetic procedures. Its main objective is to improve the body contour by means of excising redundant skin and fat tissue. Although abdominoplasty is considered a safe procedure with high satisfaction rates, intraoperative and postoperative complications can become a challenge for the surgical team. The aim of this article is to offer a synopsis of the most common complications arising after abdominoplasty, along with evidence-based guidelines about how to prevent and treat them. Methods A systematic MEDLINE search strategy was designed using appropriate Medical Subject Headings (MeSH) terms, and references were scanned for further relevant articles. Results According to the published case series, local complications are considerably more common than complications with systemic repercussions. Approximately 10% to 20% of patients suffer a local complication following abdominoplasty, while fewer than 1% suffer a systemic complication. Prevention and management strategies are critically discussed for complications including seroma, haematoma, infection, skin necrosis, suture extrusions, hypertrophic scars, neurological symptoms, umbilical anomalies, deep venous thrombosis and pulmonary thromboembolism, respiratory distress, and death. Conclusions The complications of abdominoplasty vary in severity and in the impact they have on the aesthetic outcomes. Recommendations for prevention and management are based on various levels of evidence, with a risk of observer bias. However, most complications can be treated appropriately following the current standards, with satisfactory results.

‘즉각적인 몸 변형’ 기술로서의 미용성형과 몸 관리의 정서

        태희원(Tae, Hee-won) 계명대학교 여성학연구소 2012 젠더와 문화 Vol.5 No.2

One of the primary characteristics of current cosmetic surgery market is the emergence of the cosmetic surgery pharmaceuticals like botox, or filler, which bring the concept of ‘rocedure rather than cosmetic surgery’ ‘rocedure’is seen to expand the categories of body parts and elements which need cosmetic surgery intervention since it is an injection, not a surgery. The special featuresand effects of these cosmetic surgery pharmaceuticals are central vehicles of cosmetic surgery routinization. In this context, this paper explores changes from the emergence of cosmetic surgery pharmaceuticals which are seen to ensure standard quality and results of cosmetic surgery. Moreover, I analyze the meaning and results of this process in relation to the concept of cosmetic surgery, the understanding of doctor-patient relationship and the meaning of body management practices. It is partly true that ideal norms of appearance or seductive rhetorics made by the cosmetic surgery industry, which are adept at fashioning needs and desires, seduce women to have cosmetic surgery. But I found that adeeper technical and cultural shift results from the emergence of cosmetic surgery pharmaceuticals. These technologies create the moralistic norm that women have toerase the traces of life and labor and reinscribe the sign of ‘eveloping self’on their body. Additionally, they functions as normalizing ways of ‘nnovative’? cosmetic surgery technologies, offering diverse options like prevention, enhancement, transformation to segmentalized bodily elements.

Objectives: This study was conducted to evaluate experience in aesthetic/cosmetic procedures, future planning status, and its related factors in college freshmen. Methods: The current study assessed data collected from 1,086 college freshmen who participated in a self-administered questionnaire sur-vey. A path analysis model was designed. A study model was designed to figure out effects of related determining factors on possible future experiences in cometic plastic surgery. Results: Among the study subjects, 2.5% of male and 28.9% of female students had cosmetic surgery in the past with a total of 28.9% who had cosmetic surgeries before college entrance. In addition, 3.9% of male and 16.5% of female subjects were planning cosmetic surgery in the future. For female students, a path analysis model was designed to evaluate effects of self-esteem, body image, and sociocultural attitude toward appearance through acceptance of cosmetic surgery and the past experience on planning of cosmetic surgery in the future. Even though the standard-ized path coefficient reflecting the effect of self-esteem on acceptance of cosmetic surgery was not statistically significant, the effects of the past experi-ence on the future plan was statistically significant at 5% significant level. All the other coefficients were found to be significant at 1% significant level. The magnitude of the indirect and direct effects of acceptance of cosmetic surgery was found to be the strongest, 0.394. Conclusions: Considering the present result, the proportions of those willing to have cosmetic surgery in the future were 16.5% for female college freshmen. Therefore, a proper approach is required to understand the present phenomenon and a health education course regarding this topic is also necessary in college as well as before college entrance.
