Selective Muscle Activation With Visual Electromyographic Biofeedback During Scapular Posterior Tilt Exercise in Subjects With Round-Shoulder Posture

Vol.22 No.4

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of visual electromyography (EMG) biofeedback on the EMG activity of the lower trapezius (LT), serratus anterior (SA), and upper trapezius (UT) muscles, the LT/UT and SA/UT EMG activity ratios, and the scapular upward rotation angle during scapular posterior tilting exercise (SPTE). Twenty-four subjects with round-shoulder posture participated in this study. The EMG activities of the LT, SA, and UT were collected during SPTE both without and with visual EMG biofeedback. The scapular upward rotation angle was measured at the baseline, after SPTE without visual EMG biofeedback, and after SPTE with visual EMG biofeedback. The LT, SA, and UT EMG activities, and the LT/UT and SA/UT EMG activity ratios were analyzed by paired t-test. The scapular upward rotation angle was statistically analyzed using one-way repeated analysis of variance. If a significant difference was found, a Bonferroni correction was performed (p=.05/3=.017). The EMG activities of LT and SA significantly increased, and the EMG activity of UT significantly decreased during SPTE with visual EMG biofeedback compared to SPTE without visual EMG biofeedback (p<.05). In addition, the LT/UT and SA/UT EMG activity ratios significantly increased during SPTE with visual EMG biofeedback compared to SPTE without visual EMG biofeedback (p<.05). Significant increases were found in the scapular upward rotation angle after SPTE without and with visual EMG biofeedback compared to baseline (p<.017), and no significant differences were observed in the scapular upward rotation angle between SPTE without and with visual EMG biofeedback. In conclusion, SPTE using visual EMG biofeedback may be an effective method for increasing LT and SA activities while reducing UT activity.

Background : Knee pain is a common musculoskeletal concern that inconveniences daily life. A recent study revealed that knee pain occurs mainly when the knees are not aligned correctly during weight load training. Certain visual biofeedback methods enable the strengthening of the vastus medialis (VMO) muscle, whose activity keeps the lower limb in neutral alignment. However, the visual biofeedback devices in most studies are hard to use, and only a few have suggested methods for selective VMO strengthening using laser equipment during weight-bearing tasks. Objectives : The purpose of this study was to measure the electromyographic VMO and vastus lateralis (VL) activity during forward lunge with and without biofeedback. Methods : Twenty subjects with a healthy participated in this study. VMO and VL activity between forward lunges with and without visual biofeedback using a laser beam was compared. The VMO, VL, and VMO/VL muscle activity ratios with and without visual biofeedback were analyzed using paired t-tests with p < 0.05 as the significance level. Results : The VMO muscle activity was significantly higher (p = 0.020) during the forward lunge with visual biofeedback than that in the forward lunge without feedback. The VL muscle activity was decreased but not significantly (p < 0.05). The VMO/VL muscle activity ratio was significantly higher (p < 0.05) during the forward lunge with visual biofeedback than that in the forward lunge without biofeedback. Conclusions : In this study, there were significant increases in VMO muscle activity and VMO/VL muscle activity ratio with biofeedback. The results show that the use of laser equipment for visual biofeedback can affect selective muscle activation, and the visual biofeedback equipment can be useful in treatment or development of protocols for the performance of weight-bearing exercises or exercises intended to prevent knee injury.

Background: Short foot exercise (SFex) is often prescribed and performed in the sport and rehabilitation fields to strengthen intrinsic foot muscles. However, SFex is difficult to perform because of lack of feedback methods. Objects: The aim of this study was to compare the effects of SFex with and without electromyography (EMG) biofeedback on the medial longitudinal arch (MLA) of healthy individuals who maintained a static standing position. Methods: All participants (14 males and 12 females) were randomly divided into two groups(biofeedback and non-biofeedback groups). The EMG activity of the abductor hallucis (AbdH) and tibialis anterior (TA) and the MLA angle on the dominant leg side were measured with the participant in the standing position in the pre- and post-intervention conditions. The intervention session consisted of 15 minutes of SFex with (biofeedback group) or without (non-biofeedback group) EMG biofeedback. The groups were compared using two-way repeated measures analysis of variance. Results: The post-intervention activities of the AbdH muscle (p<.05) and the AbdH/TA ratio (p<.05) were significantly greater in the biofeedback group than in the non-biofeedback group. The activity of the TA (p<.05) and the MLA angle (p<.05) in the biofeedback group were significantly lower in the post-intervention condition than in the pre-intervention condition. Conclusion: The present findings demonstrate that the combination of SFex and EMG biofeedback can effectively facilitate the muscle activity of the AbdH and strengthen the medial longitudinal arch.

Background Excessive muscle activation of the upper trapezius and decreased muscle activation of the lower trapezius can lead to changes in scapulohumeral rhythm. Many studies suggest that arm lift exercises are known to selectively strengthen the lower trapezius muscle. However, there has been no study on how compensatory actions, such as trunk rotation during arm lifting, affect the muscle activation of the upper and lower trapezius muscles. Objectives The study investigated the effect of pressure biofeedback on the muscle activity of the upper and lower trapezius muscles and the trunk rotation angle during arm lift exercises. Methods A total of 15 healthy adults were recruited for this study. Muscle activity of the upper and lower trapezius, as well as the trunk rotation angle, were measured during arm lift exercise with and without pressure biofeedback. Trunk rotation angles were analyzed using the Kinovea® program. Muscle activity of the upper and lower trapezius muscles and trunk rotation angle during the arm lift exercise with and without pressure biofeedback were statistically analyzed using paired t-test. Results With pressure biofeedback, upper trapezius muscle activity significantly decreased compared to without pressure biofeedback (p < 0.001). In contrast, lower trapezius muscle activity significantly increased during the arm lift exercise with pressure biofeedback compared to without pressure biofeedback (p = 0.002). Additionally, the trunk rotation angle significantly decreased with pressure biofeedback compared to without pressure biofeedback (p < 0.001). Conclusions Applying pressure biofeedback during arm lift exercise can effectively enhance the selective strength of the lower trapezius muscle by minimizing compensatory actions such as trunk rotation. This method has proven to be effective in strengthening the lower trapezius.

      • Portable Biological Signal Measurement System for Biofeedback and Experiment for Functional Assessment

Vol.2013 No.10

This paper presents a biological signal measurement system for biofeedback. The system was assembled based on system design concept, “portable” and “inexpensive,” in order to spread the biofeedback among people who want to promote their mental health and performance improvement. If a biofeedback system is portable, you are able to spend daily life wearing the system, and then the biofeedback will effectively work on mental problem or performance improvement for the user. Moreover, if a biofeedback system is made at low cost, most people who need some help for mental health are able to have their own biofeedback system. The assembled biological signal measurement system consists of an Android OS smart phone, micro controller (Arduino Mega ADK), and three biological sensors. The Android OS smart phone was adopted because of its compact size and cost. Experiments were conducted to verify the functions of the biological signal measurement system, and then the system could successfully capture the transitions of the subjects’ mental conditions for biofeedback.

Vol.7 No.1

Purpose : The purpose of this study figures out how the biofeedback exercise combined with a Shaker exercise and a jaw-opening exercise affects the suprahyoid muscle activation of stroke with a swallowing disorder. Methods : The study period was from June, 2018 to September, 2018, to 45 patients who were suitable for selection criteria. Participants were divided into three groups: a visuoauditory biofeedback group (VABG), and a visual biofeedback group (VBG), and a self-exercise group (SG). The three groups were divided into the Shaker exercise and the jaw-opening exercise, and the biofeedback training by themselves. Three groups performed an intervention three times a day, five times a week, and four weeks long. Also, suprahyoid muscle activity was measured with a pre-test, a post-test and a follow-up test. Results : To know the suprahyoid muscle activity after the intervention, there were statistically significant differences between the pre-test and the post-intervention(p< .01). All three groups showed the improvement with the mean comparing followed by VABG, VBG and SG. Comparing between the post- test and the follow-up test, all three groups showed the reduction of suprahyoid muscle activity with the mean comparing, followed VABG, VBG and SG. Conclusion : It found that it was more effective when providing a double-sensory biofeedback than when training with a single-sensory biofeedback. Therefore, it is necessary to provide a multi-sensory input when applying the biofeedback in rehabilitation of the swallowing disorder.

Comparison of Multifidus Muscle Activity and Pelvic Tilting Angle During Typing in Nonspecific Lower Back Pain Subjects with and without Visual Biofeedback

Vol.33 No.1

Purpose: Biofeedback using various ways has helped correct the sitting posture. This study compared the multifidus muscle activity, pelvic and 2nd sacrum tilting angle during typing in nonspecific lower back pain (NCLBP) subjects with and without visual biofeedback. Methods: Thirty subjects with NCLBP were enrolled in this study. An electromyography device was used to measure the multifidus muscle activity. An electromagnetic tracking motion device was used to measure the pelvic and 2nd sacrum tilting angle. The multifidus muscle activity, pelvic, and 2nd sacrum tilting angle were measured before and after typing for 30 minutes in the sitting position. An independent t-test was used to compare the changing values for 30 minutes between the group with and without visual biofeedback. Results: The changing values of the multifidus muscle activity, pelvic, and 2nd sacrum tilting angle were significantly smaller in the group with visual biofeedback than the group without visual biofeedback (p<0.05). Conclusions: In subjects with NCLBP, the visual biofeedback can be recommended to maintain the multifidus muscle activity, pelvic, and 2nd sacrum tilting angle during typing for 30 minutes.
