총력전기 베스트셀러 서적, 총후적 삶의 선전물 혹은 위로의 교양서

일본은 중일전쟁 이후 2차 세계대전을 정의(正義)의 전쟁이자 성전(聖戰)이라고 했다. 미래를 예단할 수 없는 전시 상황, 그리고 ‘일본국가의 정의’와 ‘조선민족의 정의’의 사이에서 식민지 조선인은 선택을 강요받았다. 어떻게 살아야 할 것인가 하는 물음은 정치?경제?윤리적 문제를 복합적으로 함의하고 있었다. 삶의 방향을 결정하지 못한 젊은이들은 (일종의 멘토라 할 수 있는) 영혼의 지도자를 찾아 조언을 구했다. 그런데 식민지 조선 지식인 역시 위의 두 정의 사이에 서 있었다. 이들 앞에는 새시대의 견인차를 자처한 당국과 일본 지식인이 산출한 다양한 서적이 있었다. 식민지민-식민자 내의 복잡한 계층?계급적 관계를 재배치하려는 베스트셀러였던 것이다. 즉 이 무렵 젊은이를 포함해 식민지 조선인을 ‘위안’해주는 서적은, 단순히 마음을 위로하는데 그치지 않고 총후적 삶을 촉구하는 ‘완화된 형태’의 선전물이기도 했다. 그런데 이 서적의 범주에는 서구에서 들어온 번역물도 포함되어 있어 그 성격의 차이에 따라 서로 경합하며 식민 모국의 지배논리에 일조하면서도 아주 제한적이지만 식민지민만의 내면 공간을 창출할 가능성도 있었다. 요컨대 이 글은 총력전 시기 문학이 아닌 베스트셀러 문화사를 통해 당대 식민지 조선인의 내면공간의 성격을 가시화할 것이며, 더 나아가 이들 서적이 양산한 식민유산을 살펴볼 수 있을 것이다.
