Performance Comparison of Liquid-Cooling with Air-Cooling Heat Exchangers Designed for Telecommunication Equipment

        Jeon, Jong-Ug,Choi, Jong-Min,Heo, Jae-Hyeok,Kang, Hoon,Kim, Yong-Chan The Society of Air-Conditioning and Refrigerating 2008 International Journal Of Air-Conditioning and Refr Vol.16 No.2

Electronic and telecommunication industries are constantly striving towards miniaturization of electronic devices. Miniaturization of chips creates extra space on PCBs that can be populated with additional components, which decreases the heat transfer surface area and generates very high heat flux. Even though an air-cooling technology for telecommunication equipment has been developed in accordance with rapid growth in electrical industry, it is confronted with the limitation of cooling capacity due to the rapid increase of heat density. In this study, liquid-cooling heat exchangers were designed and tested by varying geometry and operating conditions. In addition, air-cooling heat exchangers were tested to provide performance data for the comparison with the liquid-cooling heat exchangers. The liquid-cooling heat exchangers had twelve rectangular channels with different flow paths of 1, 2, and 12. Silicon rubber heaters were used to control the heat load to the heat exchangers. Heat input ranged from 293 to 800W, and inlet temperatures of working fluid varied from 15 to $27^{\circ}C$. The heat transfer coefficients were strongly affected by flow conditions. All liquid-cooling heat exchangers showed higher cooling performance than the air-cooling heat exchanger. The heat exchanger with 2-paths could provide more controllability on the maximum temperature than the others.

Feasibility test of the concept of long-term passive cooling system of emergency cooldown tank

Kim, Myoung Jun,Moon, Joo Hyung,Bae, Youngmin,Kim, Young In,Lee, Hee Joon Elsevier 2015 Annals of nuclear energy Vol.80 No.-

Abstract

When a passive cooling system is activated in the accident of a nuclear reactor, the water in the emergency cooldown tank of that system will eventually be fully depleted by evaporation. If, however, the evaporating water could be returned to the tank through an air-cooled condensing heat exchanger mounted on top of the tank, the passive cooling system could provide cooling for an extended period. This feasibility of new concept of long-term passive cooling with an emergency cooldown tank was tested by performing an energy balance test with a scaled-down experimental setup. As a result, it was determined that a naturally circulating steam flow can be used to refill the tank. For an air-cooled heat exchanger, the cooling capacity and air-side natural convective heat transfer coefficient were obtained to be 37% of the heat load and between 9 and 10.2W/m2/K depending on the heat load, respectively. Moreover, it was clearly verified that the water level in the emergency cooldown tank could be maintained over the long-term operation of the passive cooling system.

Highlights

The concept of long-term passive cooling system of emergency cooldown tank (ECT).

Existing natural circulation of steam from ECT and measurement of its condensing flow.

Evaluation of cooling capacity and heat transfer of air-cooled condensing heat exchanger.

Numerical analysis of the cooling performance of a totally enclosed air-to-air cooled motor using a dual cell heat exchanger model

        성상철,Seung-Ki Kim,오명도 대한기계학회 2021 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.35 No.6

The cooling performance improvement of a heat exchanger was investigated for a totally enclose air-to-air cooled high-voltage induction motor. Using dual cell heat exchanger model, 3D full mesh of the motor was created and the cooling improvement effect of the motor was numerically evaluated according to use of various design factors, such as tubes with 8 internal fins, the number of baffles, and heat exchanger housing that recycles exhaust air. The numerical models were verified through experimental testing. The results show that applying the tubes with internal fins and heat exchanger housing to recycle exhaust air to the motor reduces the average temperature rise in the stator winding by about 2.7 °C and 1.2 °C, respectively. But increasing the number of baffles in the heat exchanger from one to three increases the average temperature of the stator winding by 3.1 °C due to the increased pressure drop across tube banks. We can conclude that air flow resistance analysis of the entire system should be considered and also important on cooling performance in a TEAAC motor with external heat exchanger.

Numerical analysis of Air-cooled heat exchanger for single-phase flow with variations of outdoor air temperature has been performed. A complete set of correlations of the heat transfer in both refrigerant and air sides was employed for predicting the heat transfer rate. The numerical results derived from the correlations were verified with experimental results. The energy consumption for a hybrid cooling tower has been compared for variation of a outdoor air temperature. The results showed that the hybrid cooling tower in low outdoor temperature offers a significant improvement in energy efficiency. The thermal analysis aids significantly in the solution of the design problem of hybrid cooling tower.

In conventional air-handling units, when the circulated air from the air-conditioned space pass through the cooling coil, the air is over-cooled to eliminate the moisture as well as to decrease the temperature. The purpose of this study is to estimate the thermal performance and energy saving of the cooling/reheating system using heat exchanger which can save both cooling energy and reheating energy by exchanging heat between the cooled air and reheated air. The energy balance equations to estimate the state of the air for each components were provided and the heat transfer rates and the energy saving rates for the system were calculated from the equations. The results showed that the energy saving was up to 40% under present conditions, and saving rates were significantly affected by the air velocity, inlet conditions and the effectiveness of heat exchanger.
