The Role of Implicature in Creating Sensationalism in News Headlines

This study explores the role of implicature in creating sensationalism in news headlines. This study examines 500 news headlines through content analysis and statistical analysis using SPSS, including inter-rater reliability testing to explore three main questions: (1) In what ways do news headlines use implicature to generate sensationalism? (2) How frequently do different types of implicature occur within sensational and non-sensational headlines? (3) To what extent do the functions of implicature differ, and which functions dominate in sensational headlines? The study categorizes headlines based on the presence and complexity of implicatures, identifying the types and functions that contribute to sensationalism. The findings suggest that sensational headlines frequently employ multiple or complex implicatures to evoke strong emotional responses, such as curiosity, fear, or surprise. In contrast, non-sensational headlines tend to use fewer or simpler implicatures. This research highlights the significant role of implicature in shaping reader perceptions and underscores the ethical implications of using sensationalism in journalism. The study contributes to understanding of linguistic strategies in media and offers insights into the mechanisms behind sensational news reporting.
'근대의 선정주의'로서 신파극의 변형과 연쇄극의 출현에 대한 연구

In this paper I discuss the emergence and aethestic of the Yeonsae drama in the context of the transformation of the Sinpa drama and the sensationalism of the modern. Consequently I propose the revised understanding of the Yeonsae drama below. First, it is time to appearing and contesting of various sensationalisms of the modern in 1910s, that is considered to the peroiod of the colonial domination of the military force by Japan imperialism. Second, Yeonsae drama was not the imitation of Rensgeki(Japan), but the result of the situation of the Sinpa drama’s industrial collape, the competition of Umigwan and Danseongsa around the initiative of the box office, and the passion and the effort of Chosun filmmaker(Park Seungpil and Kim Dosan). Third, Yeonsae drama is not the “metamorphsis of theater”(Yun Baiknam), but the vernacular modernism, which was the formation by new experiment of Sinpa drama and was the result of reception of American serial film’s sensationalism. That is the experience of the new sense by the modern. Fourth, that Yeonsae drama is the origin of Korean cinema is not attributed to the appearance of Korean people in silver screen, but the refraction and the amplification of the sensationalism by the Yeonsae drama.
박경리 초기 장편소설의 여성/문학사적 위치—전쟁, 여성, 선정주의는 어떻게 여성문학의 전통이 되었나

This article intend to actively evaluate Park Kyung-ri’s novels Relapsing Fever(Jae Gui-yeol) and Lament(Aega), which have so far been poorly dealt with in the field of research, as a prototext at the starting point of the tradition of Park Kyung-ri’s writing, which embody the characteristics of war, woman and sub-genre of sensationalism. First, in Relapsing Fever(Jae Gui-yeol) and Lament(Aega), the war engraved in youth-women’s survival and daily life is shaped by the stigma of sexuality called Yang Gong-ju and the ideological stigma of being a family of communist. The two novels incorporated the conditions of women under wartime, which were presented in early short stories, into sensational and melodramatic elements such as passionate or romantic love, kidnapping, sexual violence or disappearance of female characters. In addition, the two novels unravel the sexuality of war widows in a sensational way, such as love, affection for her husband’s younger brother, and fraternal affair. And these show the possibility that the young generations seek communication and solidarity through individuality, emotion and passion, while presenting the ideal of romantic love, passionate and fateful love The two novels question the fluidity of the canon outside of the male-centered canon, as portraying the unstable post-war society differently from the male narrative. The main motifs of the two novels are later extended to the sexuality or survival of war widows (Market and Battlefield), the anxious love narratives of young women (Seasonal Fish Market, the Blue Canal, and the Green Zone). In conclusion, Relapsing Fever(Jae Gui-yeol) and Lament(Aega) are the prototexts that exemplify the world of Park Gyeong-ri’s full length popular novels in 1960’s, and should be evaluated as a female writing tradition unique to Park Gyeong-ri. 이 글은 한국전쟁에 대한 젠더화된 인식과 비판이라는 범주에서 지금까지 연구장에서 미흡하게 논의됐던 박경리의 장편소설 『재귀열』과 『애가』를 전쟁, 여성, 선정주의라는 하위장르의 특성을 구현한 박경리 글쓰기의 전통의 출발점에 있는 프로토텍스트(prototext)로 보고 적극적으로 평가하고자 한다. 먼저 『재귀열』과 『애가』에서 청년–여성의 생존과 일상에 기입된 전쟁은 양공주라는 섹슈얼리티의 낙인, 코뮤니스트의 가족이라는 사상적 낙인으로 형상화된다. 두 소설은 초기 단편소설에서 맹아적으로 제시되었던 전시 하 여성의 조건을 여성인물의 열정적이거나 낭만적 사랑, 납치, 성폭력, 실종과 같은 선정적이고 멜로드라마적인 요소에 녹여냈다. 또한 두 소설은 전쟁미망인의 섹슈얼리티를 남편의 동생에 대한 연정이나 애욕, 친족간의 불륜이라는 선정적 방식으로 풀어내는 한편, 낭만적 사랑, 열정적이고 운명적인 사랑이라는 이상을 제시함으로써 전후를 책임질 남녀 청춘 세대가 개인과 감정, 열정을 통해 소통과 연대를 모색할 가능성을 보여준다. 두 소설은 전후의 불안한 사회를 남성의 서사와는 다르게 그렸다는 점에서 남성 중심의 정전 외부에서 정전의 유동성을 심문한다. 50년대 후반에 발표된 두소설의 주요 모티프들은 이후 60년대 장편소설들에서 전쟁미망인의 섹슈얼리티나 생존의 서사(『시장과 전장』)로, 여성–청년의 불안한 사랑의 서사(『파시』, 『푸른 운하』, 『녹지대』)로 확장되어 간다. 그런 점에서 『재귀열』과 『애가』는 이후 장편들의 세계를 예시하는 프로토텍스트로서, 박경리 고유의 여성글쓰기의 전통으로 평가해야 할 것이다.

본 연구의 목적은 한국 신문의 편집형태와 선정성 보도를 실증적으로 분석하는데 있다. 본연구는 2013 년 5월 조선일보, 중앙일보, 경향신문, 한겨레에 보도된 ‘윤창중 사건’의 1면 제목과각 신문의 사설을 비 교했다. 분석결과 첫째, ‘윤창중 사건’ 을 다룬 4개 신문 1면에서 편집의차이가 있었다. 조사기간 동안 1 면에 ‘윤창중 사건’관련 기사 게재 건수와 제목의 크기에서 보수신문과 진보신문의 차이가 났고 뉴스가 치의 중요한 잣대인 제목을 선정성을 중심으로 척도분석을 한 결과, 경향신문과 조선일보가 상대적으로 선정적인 보도를 한 것으로 나타났다. 반면, 각신문이 ‘윤창중 사건’을 다룬 사설을 보면, 동일한 조사기 간 동안 중앙일보와 조선일보가 4건,경향신문이 3건 한겨레가 2건을 게재해 보수신문이 이 사건을 더욱 주목한 것으로 나타났다. 하지만 내용이나 논조의 차이는 없었고 사설 제목이나 기사에서도 선정성보다는 국격을 강조하는 내용 이 대부분이었다. 이 연구는 기사의 가치판단 기능을 가진 1면 제목의 크기와 내용 등편집행태와 각 신 문 사설의 논조를 선정성이란 척도로 분석했다. 따라서 이 연구는 신문편집에대한 기초적 분석의 사례 라는데 의의가 있다. The purpose of this thesis is to investigate and consider the aestheticism pursued by the Pre-Raphaelites from a revisionist perspective; analyzing the process and purpose of the transformation brought about by the Pre-Raphaelites’constructive use of characteristics catering to both popular tastes and sensationalism. By making the connection between popular culture and aestheticism, this dissertation aims to explore the perspective that the Movement was not merely an exclusive intellectual struggle away from common culture towards artistic purity, but rather a societal result of the balanced integration of elite approaches and popular inclinations regarding art. While the public’s growing consumption and possession of art proved to be somewhat of a burden in 19th century England, simultaneously there was also concern regarding the degrading impact of the undeveloped artistic sense of the masses on British art. During this era, conservative critics expressed concern regarding the unwelcome intrusion of inferior working-class culture on national standards of cultivation. Such critics firmly believed in the separation classy art from those favored by the masses. The Pre-Raphaelites emerged from the background of such debates, and was established as a compromise between the era’s growing demands for popular art and ideals hailing pure artistic merit and value. Although the Pre-Raphaelites initially possessed an aim to reform the Royal Academy of Arts, a victory on academic terms was not what would leave a mark in the history of art. In addition, the concept that art should ultimately become differentiated from the everyday life, and the formalist belief that the form is indeed superior to the subject imposed a serious regulation to the development of modernism and strive toward independent expression. The character of British modernism is defined by the composite, yet dynamic relationship between art and society. The Pre-Raphaelites did not discover aesthetic potential through a confining process of anti-public characteristics and purism, but rather contributed to the advancement and transformation of modern art by recognizing and incorporating popular culture into the pursuit of aestheticism. Therefore, English aestheticism can be stated to have constructively reflected the trends of the era while simultaneously resisting societal value and advocating the liberation of the artist as well as uncovering true aesthetic potential.
中韩意识流小说人物“自我觉醒”分析— 以施蛰存《春阳》和李箱《翅膀》为中心

The “New Sensationalism” in China and the “Nine-member Association” in South Korea emerged as prominent modernist literary movements during the 1920s and 1930s in both countries. As modernist schools, Shi Zhecun and Li Xiang are both good at writing stream-of-consciousness novels. These schools were heavily influenced by Western modernist literary trends as well as Japan’s new Sensationalism. The theoretical foundation of Freud’s psychoanalysis played a crucial role in the development of Western stream-of-consciousness novels, offering significant ideological tools and techniques for this literary style. A comparative analysis of the stream-of-consciousness novels “Spring sun” and “Wings” from China and South korea in the 1920s and 1930s reveals similarities in era, cultural context, literary genre (both being stream-of-consciousness novels), artistic techniques (such as symbolism), and narrative space. Two novels exhibit different ideological expressions in their pursuit of self-awareness: “Spring Sun” represents an “anti-feudal” ideology, while “Wings” embodies an “escape” ideology. Both novels underscore the author’s desire for self-awareness. Set against similar historical backdrops and adorned with symbolic titles, these narratives illustrate the protagonists’ endeavors to break free from societal constraints and seek personal fulfillment. Despite diverging in their ideological portrayals of freedom, they highlight the authors’ profound yearning for self-transcendence and liberation. Due to the unique characteristics of the authors, the destinies of the protagonists in the two novels take different paths by the conclusion.

This article is an effort to characterize the poetical subject of Sharon Olds by examining her erotic voice. She strategically uses the most provocative language, such as cock and cunt, to shock readers, while shamelessly exposing not only sexual activities of her own but also those of her parents, sister, and children. Her popularity among general readers, apparently coming from her wide openness to sex, sometimes arouses critical response that she is sensational, repetitive, and shallow. However, Olds’s scandalous language is often successful in charming readers to listen to her inner voice, erotic as it may be, to what goes beyond sensationalism. First, Olds’s sensational verbal usage can be acknowledged as a legitimate approach to literature if only supported by her candidness, and contributable to conjuring up thematic potentialities as in “The Pope’s Penis” and “Ode to the Clitoris.” Second, her seeming repetitiveness harbors varieties and even developments as the motif of sex and love changes from about parents’ puritanical pressure to about her father on his deathbed, and to about divorced husband. Additionally, her poetry sometimes deals with other subject-matters than sexual eroticism as in “Still Life in Landscape.” Third, in her most successful poems, such as “Sex without Love” and “Stag’s Leap,” she is so versed at using multi-layered metaphors, and so complicated in responding to sex and body, as to show her sense of balance and thematic depth.
CCTV영상의 보도 특성과 선정성, 현실 재현에 관한 연구

극적인 사건사고의 순간을 포착한 CCTV영상은 각종 범죄 해결에 결정적 역할을 함과 동시에 생생한 뉴스에도 큰 기여를 하면서 CCTV영상을 이용한 TV뉴스보도가 증가하고 있다. 이런 가운데 TV뉴스에서 CCTV영상이 어떻게 보도되고 현실 재현 특성은 어떠한지 KBS와 MBC 저녁종합뉴스를 분석했다. 분석결과 일평균 두 개 이상의 CCTV영상이 사회 분야의 범죄, 사건사고, 자연재해 뉴스를 중심으로 방송되어 뉴스의 주요 구성요소로 자리 잡고 있었다. CCTV영상을 이용한 뉴스보도의 연성화 수준은 높지 않았으나 선정성에 있어서는 문제가 있었다. 폭행, 집단싸움, 동물학대 등 잔인한 폭력 소재의 CCTV영상이 많이 사용되고 있었고 보도 형식에 있어서도 타블로이드 스타일 편집과 폭력과 범죄 장면의 보여주기 위주의 선정적인 보도가 빈번히 이루어지고 있었다. 현실 재현 특성은 다수의 CCTV영상이 편집을 통해 재구성되고 각종 디지털영상효과와 시간흐름 조작 기법이 이용된, 즉 뉴스제작자가 보여주고자 하는 장면과 순간을 재구성한 작위적이고 과매개적인 전략을 취하는 것으로 나타났다. 또 리얼리티의 강화를 위해 CCTV장면 하나하나를 묘사하는 방식으로 기사와 영상을 일치시키고 CCTV화면에 기자가 직접 출연하는 기법 등이 사용되고 있었다. 마지막으로 본 연구 분석을 바탕으로 CCTV영상의 문제점과 영상 저널리즘적 함의를 논하였다. This study examined how the CCTV videos were used and represented the reality in TV news, with significantly increasing use in TV news due to the unique characteristic of capturing dramatic news events and moments. The 1422 items of 28days’ news of two major terrestial TV station, KBS and MBC, were analysed. Finding showed that first, 119 CCTV videos used in 68 items and average 2 CCTV videos, mostly offered by public facilities, were daily used mainly on social affair news of the crime and disasters. Second, the level of soft news among the news using CCTV videos was almost same as previous studies but the level of sensationalism was apprehensive. The CCTV videos frequently showed cruel crime sins and a group fighting, a animal abuse, moreover, the ways of representation, trying to show the violent videos per se, were sensational. Third, the mode of reality representation was hypermediated, rather than immediated, by using editing and digital visual effects, time shifting. Furthermore, the accordance of story and video and the appearance of a reporter on CCTV videos were used to reinforce the reality and the credibility. At last, the journalistic implications and problems of CCTV videos was discussed.
뉴스생산 환경에 따른 방송 보도의 선정성 네트워크 분석·프레임 분석

이 연구는 계층모델을 토대로 뉴스생산 환경에 따라 미투 운동 보도의 선정성에 차이가 있는지 규명하기 위해 뉴스에 대한 네트워크 분석과 프레임 분석을 실시했다. 유명인에 대해 지상파보다 종편 뉴스의 선정성이 더 높았다. 지상파는 사건 중심으로 보도를 한 반면 종편은 피해 상황, 피해자의 심경, 가해자가 한 말이나 행동 등 성폭행 상황을 자세하게 묘사하고 안희정 전 지사에 대한 비난, 주변인 인터뷰를 통해 더 선정적으로 보도했다. 미투 운동 보도에서 방송은 가해자 중심으로 보도했다. 사건의 이름과 헤드라인에서 이러한 경향이 두드러졌는데 가해자인 안 전 지사가 ‘합의에 의한 관계’였다고 언급한 ‘합의 관계 프레임’이 일관되게 나타났다. 안 지사에 대한 ‘가해자 비난 프레임’도 있었다. 미투 운동 보도에서 방송은 폭로 저널리즘의 전형을 보여줬으며 미투 운동의 사회적 의미나 권력 관계를 중심으로 사건을 분석하고 해결방안을 제시한 보도는 찾아 볼 수 없었다. 연구를 통해 방송의 선정성 문제는 기자 개인의 문제가 아니라 미디어 관행, 조직적 차원의 문제로 접근해야 한다고 제안했다. This study explored news coverage on the sex crimes and analyzed news by network analysis and frame analysis based on the layered model to compare news coverage on the celebrity. As a result, in case of celebrity the broadcasting focused more and the tone of news is more sensational. The news in ground wave broadcasting more detailed on the sex crimes. It blamed the An, the governor of Chungnam more and the news is more sensational by interviewing marginal man. In #Metoo case, broadcasting news focused on the offender. The title of case name and the headline are framed based on the offender. Especially consensual relationship frame is dominated in the sex crime news. This study also can see the offender blaming frame and in the viewpoint of agenda-setting. It is difficult to find the cause of #Metoo movement and the structural approach on the case. This study highlighted the importance of layed model when analyzing the sex-crime news related with #Metoo movement.
