교외 주택에서 창과 움직임을 통한 전시 시퀀스적 시각체험 방식에 대한 연구 - 스티븐 홀의 교외주택을 중심으로 -

Steven Holl is referred to as a phenomenological architect. His architecture emphasizes architectural experiences through light and materiality, and he carries out various projects in his own way. He is an architect who considers multiple senses important, but the visual experiences he creates are also a major subject of research. In this study, we will examine the visual experience method planned by Steven Holl. Suburban houses, which have fewer functional requirements than other facilities and are good for expressing the architect's thoughts, are one of the examples that can reveal the architect's ideas. The purpose of this study is to provide basic ideas for suburban housing design by analyzing the way visual experiences are provided through landscape through Stephen Holl housing analysis. To this, this study will look at the way landscapes are seen in houses, focusing on Corbusier's thoughts, and the visual experience is related to the perception of the subject because it occurs in the subject's movement. As a result of analysis of Steven Holl suburban houses, Steven Holl suburban houses create differences in the landscape by arranging multiple masses in different directions and provide multiple views from points where the building angles change. In the case of a single mass, windows are planned in multiple directions to vary the scenery accommodated in the windows. Movement in the internal space uses mostly a tracking method to face the window and a method of facing the window when the body is switched. Through this, Steven Holl made recognize fragments of the landscape in the process of approaching the window in relation to the movement and provision of various landscapes in suburban houses, and has a visual experience that integrates the external landscape through the window. This shows that the importance is placed on the experience of the seeing process rather than what is seen.

스티븐 홀의 건축에 나타난 시적연상방식 연구

The purpose of this study aims to investigate the characteristics of architectural association methods which apply Hall"s poetic concept by looking into how Hall extracts languages and images under what circumstances and by analyzing how the extracted elements are integrated into an architectural space through what association processes. First of all, poetic association functions in the architectural process are compared, and the value of using visual associations in architectural designs are investigated based on the results of the analysis. Next, Steven Holl"s poetic concept is investigated in the context of the concept extraction step, the idea expansion step, and the space composition step in order to find out how such association methods work in the process of architectural designs. The methods of reproducing, changing and using Steven Holl"s poetic concept can be summarized as follows in relation with experiential associations, multi-meaning associations and morphology associations: 1) Steven Holl"s experiential associations are a method of expressing perceived images in the form of languages in the process of interpreting land and programs. This method has the characteristics of reproducing various architectural ideas by generating a relationship between invisible characteristics of land in images and languages. 2) Steven Holl"s multi-meaning associations are a method of directly associating a project with related objects and incidents, or of coming up with a hidden meaning. It has the characteristics of changing ambiguous images of metaphoric, figurative or ironic languages into concrete architectural images. 3) Steven Holl"s morphology associations is a method of expressing morphology images and languages which are directly related to the images. Morphology associations have the characteristics of regenerating sensory experience elements into languages or images, which can be seen experiential associations; or they use metaphoric images in architecture by substituting them with other architectural elements, which can be seen in multi-meaning associations.

스티븐 홀의 뮤지엄 건축에 나타나는 공간체험의 현상적 표현 방법 및 특성에 관한 연구

The purpose of this study is to approach to the phenomenological point of view to explore a design method for providing a variety of spatial experience of the viewer according to the functional changes of the modern museum architecture. For that, this study intends to analysis and consider the Steven Holl‘s Museum applied to the phenomenological perception for architectural design. The method of this study is summarized as follows: 1) Consider the spatial role and function of the Museum Architecture in the phenomenological approach 2) Study on the phenomenological architectural concepts and expressional method of Steven Holl 3) Finally, propose the utilization for the experiential space that is required to implement the contemporary museum architecture. The results of this study are as follows: 1) Steven Holl"s phenomenological architectural concept is the basis of the perception and awareness and has connotations of temporality and it is figured out by the approach to the environment, sense and motion. 2) Steven Holl implement the architecture as a place of experience by connecting between the place and the environment through the development of a variety of scenes and situations and planning the phenomenon of multisensory space. 3) The spatial experience appeared in Steven Holl"s museum architecture is implemented through the diversity of the scene, the persistence of the situation, the autonomy of light and color, transparency of the haptic and the potential of the material and geometry.

스티븐 홀 주거 건축에서 나타나는 창의 개념과 구현의 방식 특성

Functions and meanings of the homes are being expanded due to the global pandemic situation. And various design elements and methods in order to enhance mind & physical comfort are becoming more important than ever. Among them, windows are emphasized as a central element. Steven Holl is a representative architect who has continued experimenting and realizing architectural spaces with windows as medium. Therefore this paper discusses values and methodological characteristics of windows in Steven Holl's residential projects. Among the 23 residential projects that have been carried out since the 1970s, seven cases were carefully selected, those which best represent the architect’s architectural message based on three major periods of his works. The results are as follows. Steven Holl’s windows in residential designs can be classified into four types: medium as to overcoming nature, medium for controlling continuity, energy circulation ring between internal and external system, and primitive sensitivity recovery. In conclusion, Steven Holl's windows expanded their roles and practical values in a form that focuses on the internal characteristics of space through continuous experiments and practice. Therefore, these results may contribute in developing practical solutions in designing diversified residential spaces especially in and after this pandemic period.

스티븐 홀의 교육시설건축에 나타난 감성적 공간의 표현요소에 관한 연구

The purpose of this study is to analyze the methods applied to educational facilities of Steven Holl's architecture, especially focusing on sensible elements in the public space. Steven Holl has realized distinct space by applying very specific and limited concept. such as perspective space, color, light and shadow, time duration and perception, haptic realm, and proportion & scale. Education facilities designed by Steven Holl, are influenced the sensible aspects of space, form, materials, patterns, and other various sensible elements. Beyond the limits of color and sculptural vocabulary, Steven Holl utilizes a variety of ways which shown in educational facilities design and is identified by the emotional phenomenology of perceptual experience. Various elements in the public space are reinforced through light and materials to make experiential space in the educational facilities. This study used a composition of space that combines various sensible elements, meanings, and senses to examine how Steven Holl's architecture can mediate and reproduce user' emotional experiences and discover the existential relationship between space and user in public space of educational facilities.

스티븐 홀 박물관 건축의 다중 전망 효과

The aim of this study is to review the multi-perspectival characteristics of Steven Holl’s museum architecture. Multi-perspectives in his works show not only museum characteristics that intend movement and spatial experience but also his own concretization of phenomenological architecture. Holl’s multi-perspectival characteristics are developed from the concept of parallax. Beyond, however, simple spatial experience, his multi-perspective can be considered as a case to dissolve Western dualism of the subject and the object in architectural field. Multi-perspectives in his architecture appeared as the maximization of visual experience through diversification of view points and vanishing points. Holl seems to intend to make the variation of vanishing points by overlapping of visual frames and changes of view points by movement. In this situation, lights plays important role in shaping multi-perspectives. Lights from various directions not only act as elements of view making but also affect view configuration its changes through time. In these respects, Steven Holl’s multi-perspectival approach is the his continuous and concrete realization method of phenomenological architecture beyond theoretical application.

스티븐 홀의 현상학적 건축구성방법론에 관한 연구-현상학적 개념의 건축적 공통부분을 중심으로-

Steven Holl is outstanding architect who has been applied his phenomenological thinking to his works. he has been reported that he had adhered to focus his interest on coherent phenomenological theme and sublimated his architectural concept succesfully. This study focuses on relationship how phenomenological concept has common ground with architectural parts and with the study on phenomenological application methodology of architectonics of Steven Holl. In the case of Holl, with the theme of sense and flesh, he molds phenomenologically sensitive space. His works contains coherent phenomenolgical concepts such as distrust of rationality, synthesis of consciousness, and qeustions of perception. The Methodologies of connection with environment(nature or bridge), regional values, placeness, light and time are considered in his works(books and architectural works) as anchoring, interwining and parallax for phenomenological process in his concepts. His methodologies of enlisted works contain many valuable concepts of phenomenological intuition and would be applicable to contemporary and future architecture for humanism.

스티븐 홀의 ‘Simmons Hall’ 건축특성 분석

This study considers the Massachusetts Institute of Technology Simmons Hall(2002), located in Massachusetts, the US out of Steven Holl’s works based on the phenomenology and the porous architectural concept which has been established into his own concept. This study also analyzes the architectural characteristics focusing on the communal space, unit plan, and elevation/section of the dormitory, and performs the analysis by using the space syntax in the aspect of visual structure.

스티븐 홀의 공동주택 공간구조 분석

This study draws the architectural characteristics, targeting the Linked-Hybrid located in Beijing, China, out of the works based on the porous architectural concept that has been established through the phenomenology which is the basis of Steven Holl’s works. Also, this study aims to analyze the architectural characteristics focusing on the unit plan and public space of apartment houses, and also to conduct the analysis with the use of space syntax in the aspect of visual structure.

The purpose of this study is to explore how to make use of the light and expression methods to embody phenomenal space by considering the representation techniques and characteristics of a variety of "Phenomenal light" in his works focused on the Steven Holl"s views that thought the light as object of creating space. The process is summarized as follows: (1) Study on the relationship between light and color, Classify concept and type of phenomenal light by phenomenal color (2) Consider the characteristics and expression methods of the phenomenal light in the Steven Holl"s architecture (3) Finally, organize the concepts and representation techniques of phenomenal light, and then present method to embody phenomenal space by light. According to this, the results are as follows: (1) Perceptual color by the light of the sense forms a variety of perception and texture of light and shadow according to the contrast of shades and the change of materiality, thus embodying multisensory space with the light as the medium approach that helps to experience formal and tactile senses. (2) Spatial color by the light of volume distinguishes the flow and movement of sight, and embody inducing space with the light as Atypical activity that forms atmosphere of space through concentrated or overlapped mass of light and darkness. (3) Existential color by the light of the light source visualizes the existence of the uncertain light, and embody the receptive space with the light as emotional communication that forms symbolic and psychological meaning through metaphorical phenomena of colored light.
