본 연구는 중앙아시아 투르판 지역 최대의 석굴로 손꼽히는 베제크릭(柏孜克里克, Bezeklik) 석굴과 우리나라에서 자연동굴을 적극 활용하면서 축조가 동시에 이루어진 골굴석굴을 비교한 논문이다. 이 두 석굴은 자연 개착과 인공 축조굴로 이루어진 혼합석굴이라는 공통점을 갖고 있다는 부분에서 시사하는 바가 매우 크다. 이에 따라서 Ⅱ장에서는 베제크릭석굴의 조성배경과 사상 및 현황을 살펴보았고, Ⅲ장에서는 석굴 조영 형식과 석굴에 조성된 다양한 벽화 주제 가운데서 현재 가장 잘 남아있는 ‘서원화(誓願畵)’를 중심으로 알아보았으며, Ⅳ장에서는 베제크릭석굴을 통해 골굴석굴의 위상을 살펴보고 상호 연관성을 고찰해 보았다. 그 결과 첫째, 베제크릭석굴은 개착식과 축조식 조영 방법으로 이루어 졌는데 골굴석굴도 이 두 가지 방식을 모두 보여 주고 있다는 것을 알 수 있었다. 골굴석굴이 베제크릭석굴과 유사한 측면은 수행굴의 외형을 자연스럽게 바위면을 놔두고 그 사이에 수행굴을 개착한 점을 들 수 있다. 그런데 골굴석굴은 대부분 자연암벽을 깍은 개착식이며 베제크릭석굴은 이와는 다르게 축조 방식으로 많이 조영했다는 차이점이 있었다. 둘째, 예배굴 내부 구조 형식에서 전실과 본실이 긴 장방형에 가까운 석굴에 속한다는 점을 알 수 있었다. 수행굴도 베제크릭석굴에서 소굴을 후벽에 조영했다는 점에서 승방 역할도 했다고 할 수 있는데 이 점도 골굴석굴과 연결되는 부분이다. 셋째, 베제크릭석굴 ‘서원도’ 도상에서 묘사한 건장하고 당당한 형태의 불상은 필선이 매우 유려하면서도 강한 힘이 표현되어 있는데 골굴석굴 마애불상의 형태와 가사 옷주름 표현도 이와 유사한 것을 알 수 있었다. 넷째, 베제크릭석굴의 벽화 주제는 매우 다양하여 좀 더 심도 있게 살펴봐야하겠지만 현황으로 봐서는 그 중심이 법화사상을 배경으로 조성하였다고 볼 수 있다는 것이다. 이는 골굴석굴의 조성 사상과도 일맥상통한다고 할 수 있었다. 이런 점에서 우리의 골굴석굴과 서역 베제크릭석굴의 비교 연구는 중앙아시아 미술의 중요성을 제시함과 동시에 우리나라 불교미술의 원류를 밝히는 데에도 중요한 연구가 될 것이라 생각한다. This study compares the Bezeklik (柏孜克里克, Bezeklik) caves, one of the largest caves in the Turpan region in Central Asia, and the Golgul Caves, which were constructed at the same time while actively utilizing natural caves in Korea. These caves of two separate regions have great implications from the point that they have a common point of being mixed caves consisting of natural excavation and artificial burrows. Accordingly, in Chapter II, the background, thoughts, and current status of Bezeklik Caves were examined, in Chapter III, of the caves building formats and the various mural themes created in the caves, the best remaining Seowonhwa(誓願畵)' was focused and examined, and in Chapter IV, through Bezeklik caves, this study examined the status of Golgul Caves and examined their interrelationships. As a result, first, it can be seen that the Bezeklik Caves were constructed by the cut-and-cover and construction-type methods, and that the Golgul Caves also show both methods. The similar aspect of Golgul Caves to Bezeklik Caves is that as for the outer shape of the discipline cave, its rock surface is naturally left, and the discipline cave is intersected between them. Besides, most of Golgul Caves are cut-and-cover, cut from natural rock walls, and unlike the Bezeklik caves, there was a difference in that they were built a lot by way of construction. Second, in the internal structure of the worship cave, it was found that the front and main rooms belong to caves that are close to the long rectangular shape. It can be said that the discipline cave also played a role of monks’ living quarters in that a small cave was built in the rear wall of the Bezeklik caves, and this point was also connected to the Golgul Caves. Third, the sturdy and stately form of the Buddha statue described in the ‘Seowondo’ iconography of Bezeklik Caves has a very fluid line and expresses a strong force, and the shape of the Golgul Caves rock cliff Buddha statue and the expression of the Kasa creases were similar. Fourth, the theme of murals in Bezeklik Caves is very diverse, so we need to take a closer look, but in terms of the current status, it can be seen that the center was created with the Lotus Sūtra thought in the background. It is said that this could be in line with the idea of the formation of Golgul Caves. Thus, through a study on comparison between our Golgul Caves and the Bezeklik caves in a country to the west of China, it is thought that it can present the importance of Central Asian art and will be an important study to clarify the original streams of Buddhist art in Korea.
