Objectives: The purpose of the study was to investigate the associated factors with oral health behavior in public health majoring students. Methods: Using convenience sampling method, the subjects were 474 health-related majoring students in Jeollanamdo. A self-reported questionnaire was completed from September 1 to 15, 2014. The questionnaire consisted of general characteristics of the subjects, oral health related characteristics, oral health knowledge and behavior. Data were analyzed using SAS 9.3 version. T-test, ANOVA, correlation and multiple linear regression analyses were performed to evaluate the related factors with oral health behavior. Cronbach’s  in oral health knowledge in this study was 0.52 and that in oral health behavior was 0.80. Results: The overall score of oral health behavior was 3.38±0.52. Of all behaviors, the practice in brush of teeth and tongue had the highest mean score. In multiple regression analysis, oral health knowledge in the nursing and dental hygiene students was positively associated with the oral health behavior(=0.04, p=0.003, =0.23, p=0.003, and =0.18, p=0.034, respectively). Necessity of dental care, one of oral symptom, and more than two oral symptoms were negatively associated with oral health behavior(=-0.14, p=0.002, =-0.11, p=0.037, and =-0.17, p=0.011, respectively). Conclusions: Higher oral health knowledge showed higher levels of oral health behavior. These results will enhance the quality of oral health behavior by increasing the level of oral health knowledge. The optimal oral health education program would be able to improve oral health behavior by increasing the level of oral health knowledge.

The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of oral health education experi-ence and interest in oral health on university students’ oral health behavior and oral health knowledge. This study was conducted with the purpose of demonstrating that proper oral health edu-cation programs should be developed in order to improve oral health management behavior. With regard to teeth brushing habits, the oral health care behavior of the subjects was of an overall high average value. Average figures relating to diet and prevention questions was similar. However, the average number of oral hygiene items came out lowest. Although it is good practice to brush up on oral hygiene, behavior related to oral hygiene was relatively poor. The subjects’ level of oral health knowledge contained the three items with the highest percentage of correct answers: ‘Tongue should be wiped when brushing’, ‘Brushing should be done by rotation (teeth from top to bottom and teeth from bottom to top)’, ‘Fluoride eliminates bad breath’, ‘Toothbrushes should be replaced with a new one within 3 months’, and ‘Knowledge of brushing’. The knowledge level of fluoride and oral hygiene products was low. The study demonstrated that those with a greater experience of oral health education took better oral health care, in terms of brushing and prevention. However, behavior in terms of diet and food showed almost no difference and it was hard to find patterns of good behavior. Experience in oral health education has led to a high level of ‘interest’ oral health care.

        구인영 한국도서(섬)학회 2019 韓國島嶼硏究 Vol.31 No.4

This study investigated the subjective oral health status and oral health-related knowledge, attitude, and behavior of traders in some farming and fishing villages to improve their knowledge and management attitude to oral health. This also necessitated understanding the traditional market traders’ oral health problems and the risk factors of oral diseases and further provide the baseline data that could contribute to the promotion of adult oral health. As for the subjects of the study, the results of a survey of the markets’ operating traders’ associations collected from 500 persons in some farming and fishing villages were used as the subjects of analysis. As for the research tools, this study investigated their general characteristics(sex, age, the highest level of education, economic conditions, and regularity of health examinations), subjective oral health status(pronunciation, mastication, pain, and halitosis) and oral health knowledge, attitude, and behavior. As for the data analysis methods, the hypotheses were verified through frequency analysis of questionnaires, reliability analysis, x2-test, t-test, One-way ANOVA, Scheffe’s post-test, and simple regression analysis, and the statistical significance level was p<.05. In a comparison of general characteristics and oral health status, there were significant differences according to age(F=4.226) and the highest level of education(F=5.059). In a comparison of general characteristics and the average oral health knowledge, there were significant differences according to age(F=4.241), the highest level of education(F=5.589), and economic condition(F=3.506). In a comparison of the average oral health attitude, there were significant differences according to sex(t=-2.789), age(F=3.482) the highest level of education(F=5.414), and economic condition(F=4.174). In a comparison of the average oral health behavior, there were significant differences according to sex(t=-3.887), the highest level of education(F=7.397), and regular health examination(t=3.880). It turned out that subjective oral health status had a significant negative(-) impact on oral health knowledge(t=-2.488) so the lower the level of subjective oral health status, the lower the level of oral health knowledge became. Based on the above results, to improve the traders’oral health status, it is necessary to deliver proper oral health care knowledge, and it is important to detect oral diseases early and to improve their awareness of the importance of preventive measures. In addition, it is judged that it is necessary to teach them about oral diseases and the need for treatment. Furthermore, it is necessary to provide an oral health program for each age group, to provide continuous oral health education, and to develop and apply an active promotion project.

The purpose of this study was to analyze and conduct factors influencing oral health knowledge according to the general characteristics and oral health behavior of multicultural immigrant adults. Using a cross-sectional study design, a total of 300 multicultural immigrant adults were surveyed, and 297 were finally analyzed. Statistical analysis was performed using the IBM SPSS Statistics 21 program. The main countries of origin were China, Indonesia, and Bangladesh, the most common age was in their 30s, and the period of residence in Korea was 1-5 years. In their home country, the level of oral health education experience was high at‘no’175(58.9%). As for unmet dental treatment, 221(74.4%) said ‘there is’, which is three times higher than ‘no’. The main reason for unmet dental treatment was ‘because the cost is burdensome’. Multiple regression analysis was conducted to determine the factors influencing oral health behavior on oral health knowledge. Oral health behaviors that affect oral health knowledge include brushing teeth more than twice (B=1.170, p<0.05) and subscribing to national health insurance (B=0.871, p<0.01), which have a positive(+) impact on oral health knowledge. Having unmet dental treatment(B=-1.122, p<0.001) appeared to have a negative(-) effect on oral health knowledge. As a result of this study, multicultural immigrant adults confirmed the need for a multicultural oral health support project to learn how to brush their teeth correctly, sign up for national health insurance, and solve unmet dental care needs, and it is believed that it can be applied as a component of a multicultural oral health promotion program.

Objectives: This study was carried out with the aim of utilizing it as basic data in a plan for oral health promotion by analyzing oral-health awareness in high school students of some districts in our country, and by analyzing physical, mental and social influential factors in oral health, through using OHIP(Oral Health Impact Profile). Methods: It surveyed by carrying out self-administered questionnaire research targeting 536 boy & girl high school students in the 1st and the 2nd grade at 3 high schools in some districts of Gyeonggi Province. Results: 1. As for experience of having not visited dental clinic, a case of having not visited accounted for 32.5%. On the other hand, a case of having visited accounted for 67.5%. As for the appearance of oral health education, only 2.8% responded as saying of having experience. 97.2% responded as saying of having not taken oral health education. 2. As for oral health state perceived by oneself, the response as saying of `thinking it to be healthy` and that `there is something wrong` showed the distribution of 34.1% that is the same ratio. As for oral health interest, a case of having a little interest(58.4%) or of being so much interested(12.5%) showed 70.9%. A case of having no special interest(24.8%) or of having no interest at all(4.3%) showed the level of 29.1%.3. As for oral health knowledge, the toothbrushing knowledge was the highest with 4.54 marks out of 6-point perfection. The toothbrush knowledge(4-point perfection) showed low point with 2.05 marks. 4. By gender, a case of men was high in OHIP(Oral Health Impact Profile) for the functional restriction and physical pain. On the other hand, in the remaining sphere, women were indicated to be high in OHIP. The statistically significant difference was indicated in the spheres such as physical pain, psychological discomfort, a drop in psychological ability, a drop in social ability, and social separation. 5. According to oral health state perceived by oneself, a case of thinking it to be healthy was indicated to be high in OHIP for every sphere. A case of thinking it to have gum disease was indicated to be low in OHIP for every sphere. The statistically significant difference was indicated in every sphere except the sphere of functional restriction. 6. As for a factor of having influence upon OHIP according to oral health knowledge, it was indicated that the higher toothbrush knowledge leads to having more influence upon OHIP. Conclusions: It could be known that the oral health knowledge and OHIP are varied as well according to the oral health interest level. Also, the oral health education proper for subjects is not being performed. Even as for frequency of visiting the dentist, a regular visit is failing to be made. In consideration of these points, the diversified and effective educational program is likely considered to be necessarily developed and improved that subjects can have more interest in oral health.
