Measurement of Global Nursing Research Output: A Bibliometric Study (1996-2015)

Singh, Shivendra,Pandita, Ramesh Korea Institute of Science and Technology Informat 2018 Journal of Information Science Theory and Practice Vol.6 No.1

Purpose: This study aims to examine the research output in the field of nursing at the global level during the last two decades, viz., for the period 1996-2015, with special reference to India. Some of the aspects examined include the research growth in nursing literature during the period of study, leading nursing research countries at the regional and global level, and citation analysis. Scope and Methodology: This study is global in nature, but emphasis has also been laid on India's research contribution in nursing at the global level. Aspects like regional contribution to the nursing research output have also been assessed. This study is purely based on secondary data retrieved from SCImago Journal and Country Rankings. The figures in the study are based on one particular database and are not exhaustive; hence they simply reflect a trend in nursing research at the global level. Findings: During the period 1996 through 2015, a total of 550,490 research articles were published across the world by 212 nation states at an average of 2,596 articles from each individual country. On average, during the period of study, the number of nursing research publications grew at the rate of 7.36% each year. North America has emerged as one of the leading nursing research continents of the world by publishing 218,614 research articles, constituting 39.71% of the global nursing research output. The U.S. and U.K. are the world's two leading nursing research countries, which contributed 193,819 and 61,730 research articles respectively, comprising a 35.21% and 11.21% share of global nursing research output. India and China, apart from being the two fastest growing nursing research countries, have the potential to meet the global human resource demand in the field of nursing, given the skilled and trained human resource both these countries possess in nursing. Social Implication: There is always a need to share working knowledge in some professions and nursing is one of them. There cannot be a better medium than linking practice with theory through the research medium. Metric studies in turn help to get a better idea about the amount of work done in any given field at the national and international level, thus identifying the need thereof to improve upon those areas where there is research lag.

      • 국내 간호연구에 대한 교육실태 및 교수연구 지원에 관한 조사연구

박성애,하양숙,김금순,윤순녕,송미순,전경자 서울대학교 간호대학 간호과학 연구소 1994 간호학 논문집 Vol.8 No.1

A nationwide survey was taken place in order to study present status of nursing research education and faculty research support in Korean nursing education system. Sixteen out of 19(84.2%) baccaleureate program nursing schools and 26 out of 43 (60.5%) diploma program nursing schools responded to mailed questionnaire. Then data from 42 nursing programs were analyzed for the study. The study results show as below; 1. Nursing research education is increasing in beccaleureate and diploma nursing programs. In diploma nursing programs, 15 programs (71.5%) offered optinal nursing research courses. Most of these courses were opened recently (87% in 1-5 years), and reflects nursing educators' changing view regarding roles of clinical nurses in nuring research. In baccaleureate program, all 16 schools offered nursing research courses, 71.4% as required, 28.6% as optional, and 79.6% of these courses were open before 1985. 2. At least one nursing research course in required in all of master's programs. 3. The quality and quantity of support given to faculty members' research activities was poor in general. Respondents pointed out as difficulty of funding as the biggest problem in research activities. It was suggested that nursing scientists should take effort in order to give wide publicity for excellence and uniqueness of nuring science, especially to other academic societies and research funding organizations. It is suggested that hours of lecture and clinical instruction, support personnel for faculty research, academic activities(in nation and international) and publication should be included in future study of faculty research activities.

        정신간호학회지에 게재된 연구논문 분석

        이광자 대한간호학회정신간호학회 2001 정신간호학회지 Vol.10 No.4

This study was conducted to analyze the nursing research methodology and the key concepts used in articles published in the Journal of Korean Academy of Psychiatric Nursing. The purpose of this study was for reflecting the trends of psychiatric nursing research and suggesting the direction of future nursing research in Korea. The results are following. 1. There were 173 research studies in Journal of Korean Academy of Psychiatric Nursing from 1992 to 2000, yet the number increased in 1998, 110 research studies done since 1998 and it is 63% of the total research studies. 2. The most of the research studies are non-degree research studies. Thesis and research studies with fund have been rapidly increased since 1999. There were many individual research studies, but after 2000 year the collaborative research studies have been increased. 3. The prevailing research designs were the non-experimental design(60.1%), pre-experimental(13.3%), quasi-experimental(9.8%), and qualitative research designs(9.3%) in order. 4. As for the research subjects were patient(30.2%) and generally healthy persons(24.2%), next to primary care-givers, nutrses or nursing students and research articles. 5. The data collection method used most often self-report questionnaires using psychosocial measurement(66.2%). Intelview methods and physiologic measures were used relatively few times. In 1970's psychosocial measurement and self-report had been used a lot. After 1990's psychological measurement has been increased. 6. The domain of the key concepts that prevailed was health(39.3%) and human being domain(19.8%). The key concepts related to nursing domain(18%), and environmental domain(13%) were relatively low. The prevailing key words of the health domain were psychological health-stress, depression, mental health, self-esteem. The prevailing key words related to nursing domain were self-care activity, psychoeducation, group counseling, community mental health nursing program. This study has the limitation of focusing on only the superficial structural analysis rather than in-depth content analysis of each article. However, this study is the study for reflecting the trends of nursing research based on the Korean Academy of Psychiatric Nursing. Based on the research results, there are some prospect and proposition. 1. It is needed to study to check effectiveness of the post educational program for the patients and families. 2. In the research design, it is needed more qualitative research. In the main concerns of the psychiatric nursing research is "human's real experience to understand other peoples experience. 3. The present study has provided important psychiatric nursing concepts such as human being, health, environment, and nursing for understanding psychiatric nursing interventions. The key concepts related to nursing and environmental domain were relatively low.

        산업간호학회지 논문의 연구동향 분석

        임경희,박경민 한국직업건강간호학회 2001 한국직업건강간호학회지 Vol.10 No.2

This study examined all the papers published in the Journal of Occupational Health Nursing from 1991 to May 2000 based on an objective frame of evaluation. The purpose of study is to prospect the trend of occupational nursing research and to provide an optimal direction for future occupational nursing service. The results of total 94 studies were analyzed as follows. 1. The number of papers published in 1991- 1992, 1993-1995, 1996-1997 was not significantly increased. However, the number of papers were obviously increased after 1998. 2. In the design of research, survey studies were definitely dominant. But, they are gradually decreasing and experimental studies are increasing. 3. In the fields of research, health problems, health risk factors and health awareness were higher than others. Occupational health nurse's task and job satisfaction were main areas of research until the middle of 1990's. However, after then, not only health problem, risk factor and awareness of health but also health promotion and preventive health behavior are increasing in the research areas. 4. The collaborative researches have gradually increased and the type of author has been varied. The number of researches completed by funds was undertaking only 3 among the total 94. 5. In the research analysis, except for case studies and literature studies, the research subjects have been shifted from the occupational health nurses to the industrial workers, and more diversified. The sample size has been enlarged and the major place of the study is industry. The questionnaire was used in many studies as instrument for data collection and measurement. But, complementary methods of diverse instruments have been increased. The method of data analysis has obviously showed some changes moving from descriptive statistics to inferential and advanced statistics. 6. The ways of nursing intervention have prominently diversified in experimental studies. The contents of case studies were mainly focused on the health management programs and activities in industry. The research concepts and the contents of literature study were also changed progressively in various way. Based on the above findings, conclusions are extended to the following discussion: Since the Korean Academic Society of Occupational Health Nursing was instituted in 1990, the researches of occupational health nursing have shown an acute methodological development in both quantity and quality. However, they were considered still in the lack of research verifying the effects of nursing intervention program. Also, the development of nursing intervention and nursing theory lacked. Therefore, more empirical researches are strongly needed to utilize the field of occupational health nursing in Korea Researchers are also encouraged to exert more efforts to get research funds.

간호학 전공 대학원생들을 위한 연구윤리 과목 개발, 운영 및 효과평가

        오의금,김상희,김소선,김선아,조은희,유재용 한국의료윤리학회 2011 한국의료윤리학회지 Vol.14 No.4

Purpose: This study was conducted to develop and evaluate a research ethics course in a graduatelevel educational program in nursing. Methods: This study consisted of three major parts. First, an initial course was developed based on a review of the existing literature regarding research protocols and the ethical issues involved in research. Second, this initial course was delivered to the graduate students in one nursing program and a quasiexperimental study was applied to evaluate the course. Third, based on an analysis of quantitative responses from the participating nursing students, as well as input from a panel of experts, a final research ethics course was developed for this graduate program in nursing. Results: The initial course involved the following six content areas: the concept of research ethics, bioethics and research ethics, research ethics for the protection of human subjects, statistical analyses in research ethics, ethical issues in publishing and intellectual property, and research ethics in nursing. The quantitative research reports showed a significant increase in the nursing students’ perception, self-efficacy, and knowledge regarding research ethics. Further analyses show that graduate nursing students still need structured course work in order to increase their ability to carry out good research. Additionally, a course in research ethics in nursing was designed as a 1-credit, pass/fail official course consisting of the following five content areas: the concept of research ethics, the protection of human subjects in nursing, data management and research ethics, statistical management and research ethics, and publication and research ethics. Conclusion: This study was carried out to develop and evaluate a course in research ethics for a graduate-level educational program for nursing students.
