현진건의 문학적 후견인과 개인적 재능 - 「희생화」, 「지새는 안개」를 중심으로 -

이 글은 현진건의 어린 시절을 보냈던 대구와 작가로 성장하는 데 기여한 인물[후견인]들에 대해 자전적 소설을 토대로 논의했다. 주 논의 대상으로는 단편소설 「희생화」와 「지새는 안개」이다. 현진건의 첫 소설 「희생화」는 그간 알려지지 않았던 가족사적 비극을 내포한 작품이다. 「희생화」는 <개벽사> 문예부장이던 당숙 현희운의 주선으로 <개벽>지에 발표되었다. 이 소설에서 독립운동가였던 셋째 형 현정건의 결혼 파탄의 시초와 해외 망명의 동기를 추정케 한다. 「지새는 안개」에서는 현진건이 기자로서 취업하게 되는 과정에서의 후원자를 얘기하고 있다. 「지새는 안개」를 통해 그간 알려져 있지 않았던 현진건과 숙부 현영운의 관계를 엿볼 수 있다. 이런 점에서 「희생화」, 「지새는 안개」는 현진건 형제와 서울 친척들 간의 긴밀한 유대가 드러난 작품으로 논의한다. 이 두 소설의 등장인물에게는 대구가 고향이라는 의미와 함께 가족사의 위기를 내포한 공간이다. 하지만 현진건이 개인적 재능과 성공한 작가로서 뒤돌아 본 대구는 빼앗긴 땅, 빈곤의 땅으로서 민족사의 비극을 담아내는 공간이기도 하다. 현진건의 수필 「여름과 맨발」을 통해 현진건의 빈곤 소재 작품에 나타는 빈곤층에 대한 체험적 통찰과 연민을 살필 수 있다. This study discusses Daegu, where Hyeon Jin-geon spent his childhood, and the contributors patrons who contributed to his growth as a writer based on his short stories “Sacrificial Flowers” and “Overnight Fog.” . His first short story, “Sacrificial Flowers,” involves a mysterious tragedy in the history of his family. It was published in Gaebyeok thanks to the arrangement made by Hyeon Hee-woon, his uncle and the head of the literature department at Gaebyeoksa. This story hints at the beginning of the failed marriage of his third brother, Hyeon Jeong-geon, who was an independence activist and his motivation for going into exile overseas. “Overnight Fog” depicts Hyeon Jin-geon's employment as a reporter. This story also reveals the whereabouts of Hyeon Yeong-woon, another uncle of his, who had been unknown to the public. Both the stories show the close relationships and solidarity among his brothers and relatives in Seoul. Daegu is not only the author's the home town, but it also symbolizes the crisis of their family history to the characters of the stories. Looking back on the city as a successful writer , however, Hyeon Jin-geon saw Daegu as a land that had been taken away, a town of poverty, and a placeholder for the tragedy of Korea's national history. He expresses his experiential insight into and compassion for the poor in his essay “Summer and Bare Feet” as well as in other works.
