Hunayurei is a Japanese ghost of Japan that emerges in the oral tradition of a group that was on the losing side of history. The word Hunayurei, found in early Buddhist tales, later established itself as a ghost symbolizing the fall of the Heike family. This is a possibility because the area where the Heike family resided is a sprawling area stretching along Japan's western coast. However, after the Meiji Restoration, the image of Hunayurei gradually changed as modernization accelerated. This paper tries to understand the changing patterns in these ghost stories by analyzing the story of Hunayurei Uwasanotakasio (1886) and the Hunayurei incidents of which increased sharply after the Russo-Japanese War.
