        Comparison of the Immediate Effects of Kinesio Taping on the Dynamic Balance of Stable Ankle and Functional Ankle Instability among Young Adults in Their Twenties: a preliminary study

        Purpose : Kinesio taping applied to the ankle varies, and if the overall ankle is taped as much as possible, several effects, including balance, can be expected, but clinically the cost reduction for intervention is very important. Therefore, this study attempted to find out the optimal way to the effect and cost of kinesio taping on ankle dynamic balance. Methods : The subject of this study was 24 university students in their 20s (male: 13, female: 11), who received sufficient explanation of the purpose and method of the study. The Cumberland ankle instability tool (CAIT) questionnaire was used for the degree of ankle instability of the study subjects. If the subject's CAIT score was 28 points or more, it was classified as a stable ankle, and if the score was 24 points or less, it was classified as functional ankle instability (FAI). In this study, Biodex Balance System<sup>®</sup> measurement equipment was used to calculate the dynamic balance of study participants. The application of kinesio taping was performed by one physical therapist to attach in the same way, and a method of wrapping the ankle joint was applied in the eight-shaped bandage. Results : The results are as follows in before and after taping of the stable ankle and FAI group. There was no significant difference in the overall, anterior-posterior, and medial-lateral stability index. The comparison is as follows between groups for the differences (post-pre value) in before and after the application of kinesio taping. There were no significant differences between groups in all the overall, anterior-posterior, and medial-lateral stability index. Conclusion : In this study, no significant difference in kinesio taping was found in the dynamic balance of stable ankle and FAI (overall, anterior-posterior, and medial-lateral). It is necessary to continue to study ways to find the maximum effect while minimally attaching them to the application method of ankle kinesio taping.

        This study was conducted in order to determine the effects of ankle taping on athletes' sports activities, Sixteen athletes were randomly selected and eight of them were taekwon do athletes and rest of them were wrestlers. Their activities were tested before and after their ankles were taped. The results obtained are as follows: 1. The flexibility of the athletes after ankle taping was poorer than that of the athletes before ankle taping. The difference was statistically significant(P>0.01). 2. The ability of balance of the athletes after ankle taping was better than that of the athletes before ankle taping. The difference was statistically significant(P<0.05). 3. The strength of muscles of the athletes after ankle taping was not better than that of the athletes before ankle taping. The difference was not statistically significant. 4. The power of the athletes after ankle taping was not better than that of the athletes before taping. 5. Agility of the athletes after ankle taping was better than that of the athletes before taping. The difference was statistically significant.(P<0.05). 6. Muscular endurance of the athletes after ankle taping was better than thant of the athletes before taping. The difference was statistically significant

        만성 발목 불안정성 환자에서 키네시오 테이핑과 MWM 테이핑 적용이 발목의 근력과 균형능력의 변화 비교

        Background: Ankle sprains, and the resulting ankle instability worsen to chronic due to recurrent ankle injuries or sprains, 78% of which are accompanied by posture instability and damage due to changes in the position of the talus of the ankle. The purpose of this study is to investigate the immediate effect of applying MWM taping on the patient's muscle strength and balance ability in patients with chronic ankle instability. Methods: 15 people with MWM taping and 15 people with Kinesio taping were applied, and after applying the taping of the ankle, 10 minutes of walking treadmill and 10 times of forward lunge operation, the change in ankle muscle strength and balance ability was confirmed. The strength test of the ankle was performed using a test device called Biodex system 4 (USA) for the movement of the dorsi-flexion and plantar flexion of the foot, and the balance of the two groups was measured using Biodex balance system (USA) to test balance ability. Results: The comparison of muscle strength changes in the ankle does not show a significant increase in the group applying MWM compared to the group applying kinesio taping (p<.05). In the comparison of equilibrium capabilities, the MWM taping group also showed a significant increase in the MWM taping group compared to the kinesio taping group (p<.05). Conclusion: When applying MWM taping and kinesio taping to patients with chronic ankle instability, there was no significant difference in comparison of muscle strength changes, but there was a significant difference in comparison of balance ability.

        Immediate Effects of Ankle Eversion Taping on Balance and Gait Function in Patients with Chronic Stroke: A Randomized Controlled Trial

        PURPOSE: This study examined the immediate effects of applying ankle eversion taping using kinesiology tape in chronic stroke patients―design: a randomized cross-over trial. METHODS: Seventeen stroke patients underwent three interventions in random order. The subjects were initially assigned randomly to an ankle eversion taping, placebo taping, or no taping for each intervention. Ankle eversion taping was used for mechanical correction and was involved in ankle dorsiflexion and eversion. The tape was stretched by 30-40%. Placebo tapping was applied in the same form as eversion tapping but was not stretched. The balance ability was assessed using the Y-balance test. The gait ability was assessed by maximum foot pressure and time of stance phase, and gait speed was assessed using a 10 m walk test (10MWT). All measurements were performed immediately after the intervention. RESULTS: The results showed that the dynamic balance and stance phase time in chronic stroke patients was improved after ankle eversion taping. The ankle eversion taping conditions increased significantly (p < .05) compared to the placebo and no taping conditions. CONCLUSION: The application of ankle eversion taping that uses kinesiology tape instantly increased the gait ability of chronic stroke patients. On the other hand, more research will be needed to identify the long-term effects of ankle eversion taping.

      • 발목 테이핑이 대학 운동선수의 자세조절 기능에 미치는 영향

          The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of ankle taping on single leg stability, isokinetic strength, endurance, and range of motion in athletes with ankle injuries within last six months. Twenty eight collegiate athletes were volunteered to participate in this study. Single leg stability, isokinetic strength, endurance, and range of motion were assessed before and after ankle taping. The results were as follows: 1. There was not signigicant difference in static stability, but dynamic single leg stability showed significant difference in overall stability(OS), anterior/posterior stability(AP) and medial/lateral stability index score(ML) after ankle taping at each level. 2 Both isokinetic ankle eversion 60°/sec showed significant difference between before and after ankle taping. There was difference in both isokinetic ankle inversion and eversion at 180°/sec. 3. Range of motion(ROM) showed significant difference between before and after ankle taping. In conclusion, ankle taping on athletes with ankle injuries was effective in enhancing single leg stability, isokinetic muscle function, and restricting ROM Ankle taping could reduce ankle injuries and prevent re-injury.

        Objectives : The purpose of this study is to investigate the clinical effect of Ankle Meridian Tendino-musculature Taping (MTT) on lateral ankle sprain. Methods : 47 patients with lateral ankle sprain were randomized into two groups : Control group was practiced with 8-shape ankle taping treatment. MTT group was practiced with 8-shape ankle taping treatment with ankle Meridian Tendino-musculature taping. We investigated visual analogue scale(VAS) and ankle circumference(cm) for effect evaluation. Results and Conclusions : The VAS score of Control group was statistically lower than Sample group between 1st and 4th treatment and the circumference measure was also lower than Sample group. So we may conclude that ankle Meridian Tendino-musculature taping treatment is recommendable of lateral ankle sprain.

        발목 테이핑이 정상 성인의 균형에 미치는 영향

        연구배경: 정상 성인에게 발목 테이핑을 시행하였을 때 좌우 자세 치우침과 흔들림의 변화를 알아보고, 연령에 따른 그 효과의 차이를 알아보고자 하였다. 방법: 먼저 281명의 건강한 성인 자원자를 대상으로 발목테이핑 착용 전후에 평형감각 검사를 시행하였다. 이후 239명의 정상성인 자원자를 대상으로 발목 테이핑의 가적용(sham ankle taping)에 따른 차이를 확인하고자 가적용 전후에 따른 평형감각 검사를 시행하였다. 두 군은 모두 연령에 따른 차이를 확인하고자 65세 미만과 65세 이상 연령의 두 군으로 나누어 분석하였다. 평형감각검사는 Mediance?? (Human-Tech Inc, Korea)를 사용하여 시행하였고 발목테이핑의 방법은 국제 밸런스테이핑 협회에서 지정한 방법으로 시행하였다. 결과: 발목 테이핑 착용 후 65세 미만 젊은 연령군에서는 자세 흔들림이 의미 있게 감소되었고, 노인군에서는 자세치우침이 의미 있게 감소되었다. 발목테이핑 가적용군에서는 자세치우침과 흔들림의 의미 있는 변화가 없었다. 결론: 위의 결과로 발목테이핑이 나이에 따라 다른 양상으로 자세균형을 호전시킴을 알 수 있었으며, 정확한 발목 테이핑 방법의 중요성도 확인하였다. Background: This study is designed to evaluate the effect of ankle-taping on postural sway and limb load asymmetry (LLA) in normal adults. Methods: 281 healthy subjects volunteered. These subjects were performed the balance task on two different conditions, with ankle-taping or not. Likewise, 239 healthy subjects volunteered and performed the balance task on two different conditions, with sham ankle-taping or not. All subjects were divided into two groups; younger (<65 years) and older (≥65 years) groups. Postural sway and body weight distribution were recorded while the subjects were standing on two adjacent force platforms (Mediance??; Human-Tech Inc, Korea) during 30 seconds trial. All subjects chose a comfortable stance with feet apart and asked to look straight ahead at a fixed point in a quiet room. Results: There is no significant change in sham ankle-taping group. In young age group, postural sway is decreased significantly by ankle-taping (P<0.05). In old age group, LLA is decreased significantly by ankle-taping (P<0.05). Conclusion: The result indicate that ankle-taping improve balance in different pattern according to age. And proper methods of ankle-taping should be needed.

        Effect of Muscle Taping and Joint Taping on Static and Dynamic Balance in Normal Adults with Chronic Ankle Instability

        Purpose : This study was conducted to investigate the effect of muscle taping and joint taping on static and dynamic balance in normal adults with chronic ankle instability. Methods : The subjects of this study were 32 people who met the inclusion criteria. This cross-sectional study was conducted using the Kinesio tape, an elastic tape, was used. Subjects were randomized to exclude the effect of sequence, and no taping, joint taping, and muscle taping were applied as taping interventions. One-leg standing test and a Functional reach test were conducted to measure static balance, and Y-balance test was conducted to measure dynamic balance. One way repeated ANOVA was performed to investigate the difference in balance ability according to the taping intervention. If there was a significant difference, a post-hoc was performed using the Bonferroni method. Results : In the case of static balance, joint taping showed more significant results than did no taping and muscle taping (p<.05), and muscle taping showed more significant results than did no taping (p<.05). In the case of dynamic balance, muscle taping showed significantly larger results than did no taping and joint taping (p<.05) and joint taping showed significantly larger results than did no taping (p<.05). Conclusion : This study found that mechanical stimulation of muscles and joint compression by elastic taping increased ankle stability and improved static and dynamic balance. In particular, for static balance, joint taping was more effective than muscle taping, and for dynamic balance, muscle taping was more effective than joint taping. Applying the appropriate taping method to individual subjects has the advantage of maximizing the therapeutic effect for the recovery of balance ability. Similarly, the application of various tapings to subjects with ankle instability will have a positive effect on functional improvement.

        비탄력 발목 테이핑이 기능적 발목 불안정성을 가진 농구선수의 관절가동범위, 고유수용성 감각 및 기능적 수행능력에 미치는 영향

        본 연구의 목적용 비탄력 발목 테이핑이 남자 농구선수의 경기 중 관철기통범위, 고유수용성 감각, 그리고 기능적 수행능력에 미치는 영향을 규명하는 것이었다. 기능적 발목 불안정성을 가진 남자 대학 농구선수 10명이 연구대상으로 본 연구에 참여하였으며, 이들은 테이핑 처지와 통제 처치에 반복적으로 참여하였다. 각 처치를 적용하여 l쿼터 10분으로 구성된 총 4쿼터의 모의 농구경기를 실시하도록 하였고, 각 시점에서 관절가통범위, 고유수용성 감각, 그리고 기능적 수행능력을 측정하여 처치 간에, 그리고 시점 간에 비교·분석하였다. 본 연구에서 얻은 결과를 요약하여 제시하면 다음과 같다. 1) 테이핑 처치 시 관절가동범위가 배측굴곡-저측굴곡 각도와 내번-외번 각도 모두 통제 저지에 비하여 유의하게 낮게 나타났다. 또한 테이핑 처치 시 관절가동범위는 시점이 지날수록 유의하게 증가된 반연, 통제 처치 시에는 시점 간에 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 2) 테이핑 처치 시 고유수용성 감각이 모든 방향에서 통제 처치에 비하여 높게 나타났다. 테이명 처치와 통제 저지 내에서 시점 간에는 유의한 차이가 나타나지 않았다. 3) 테이핑 처치 시 기능적 수행능력이 팔자형 호프 테스트와 정사각형 호프 테스트 모두 통제 처지에 비하여 유의하게 우수한 것으로 나타났다. 두 처치 시 모두 시접이 지닐수록 저조해지는 양상을 보였다. 이상의 결과를 종합해 보면, 비탄력 테이평은 기능적 발목 불안정성을 가진 농구선수의 관절가동범위, 고유수용성 감각, 그리고 기능적 수행능력의 향상에 효과적인 것으로 결론지을 수 있으며, 그 효과가 40분의 농구와 유사한 운동 전반에 걸쳐 지속되고 있는 것을 확인할 수 있었다. The purpose of the study was to investigate the effects of the adhesive ankle taping on range of motion, proprioception, and functional performance capability in basketball players. Ten male collegiate basketball players with functional ankle instability participated in two trials, i.e., taping trial and control (non-taping) trial, repeatedly in a counterbalanced order. Two trials were apart by at least one week. Four quarters of l0-min simulated basketball game were performed in a day of the trial with taping or without taping. Before I(st) quarter. after 2(nd) quarter, and after 4th quarter, range of motion and proprioception were measured. In addition, before I(st) quarter, after I(st) quarter, after 2(nd) quarter, after 3(rd) quarter. and after 4th quarter, functional performance capability was measured. The data were compared between two trials, and among three or five tests depends on variables. Main results of the present study were as follows: 1) ROM of ankle joint in the taping trial was significantly lower than the control trial. The ROM increased significantly as the tests progress in the taping trial, whereas the ROM remained unchanged through the tests in the control trial. 2) Proprioceptions of all directions were significantly greater than the control trial. In each trial, no significant difference was found among tests. 3) Functional performance capability was significantly better in the taping trial than the control trial. There was a trend to get worse in the functional performance capability as tests progress in both trials. It was concluded that the adhesive ankle taping was effective for limiting excessive ROM to prevent injuries as well as improving proprioception and functional performance capability during the basketball game in basketball players with functional ankle instability.

        스쿼트 운동 시 발목 관절에 키네시오 테이프의 적용이 넙다리 네갈래근과 뒤넙다리근의 활성에 미치는 영향

        Background: During squat exercises, Ankle joint stability during squat movement transfers forces produced by unstable supports or various loads to the leg joints and trunk, reducing the risk of injury; therefore, a reference is needed for correct ankle joint posture during squat exercises. The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of ankle joint stability on quadriceps femoris and hamstring activation during squat exercises. Design: Quasi-experiment one group pretest-posttest design. Methods: The participants in this study were 20 volunteers who performed squat exercises with and without kinesiology tape. We measured quadriceps femoris and hamstring activation using surface electromyography. The ankle joint was stabilized with kinesiology tape using the ankle balance taping (ABT) method. A paired t-test was performed to compare differences between taping conditions. Results: Vastus medialis and vastus lateralis activation were greater following squat exercises with kinesiology tape than without; however, the difference was not significant. Medial and lateral hamstring activation was not significantly different between taping conditions. Conclusion: Although it is difficult to maintain stability using kinesiology tape alone, ankle joint stability is believed to affect quadriceps femoris muscle activity, which increases the effectiveness of the squat exercise.
