1880년대 우리나라에 들어온 개신교는 지난 100여 년 동안 놀라울 정도로 성장했다. 외국의 새로운 문화를 소개하고 생활 개선을 주도하는 등 경제, 사회 전반에 걸쳐 많은 영향을 끼쳤으며 기독교인이 1,000만 명에 도달하는 성과를 이루었다. 그러나 최근에 한국 교회가 성장의 정체기를 맞이하면서 영성의 문제와 사회복지 참여 문제는 교회의 화두로 등장하게 되었다. 작금의 한국 기독교가 처한 영성과 사회복지실천의 문제를 동시에 해결 할 수 있는 방안으로 이현필과 그의 공동체 귀일원을 제시하고자 한다. 본 논문의 목적은 이현필의 영성과 사회복지 활동을 살펴보고 그의 사회복지 실천이 사회복지계에 미친 영향과 의미에 관하여 고찰하는 것이다. 이를 위해 관련 문헌들을 중심으로 연구를 수행하고자 한다. 이현필의 삶에 대해 천대받는 자들을 보살핀 사회복지 실천가로서 뿐만 아니라 말씀을 깊게 묵상한 영성가로서 그리고 호남지방과 경기도 일대의 순회하며 복음을 전한 전도자로서의 모습도 조명해 보았다. 이현필의 생애는 예수 그리스도의 삶을 따르려는 나눔과 섬김의 실천이었으며, 그의 기독교적 영성은 청빈, 순결, 순명, 사랑, 죄의식으로 대표된다. 이현필과 제자들은 사회적 약자를 보살핌에 있어 철저하게 기독교 영성의 바탕 위에서 행하였다. 이러한 사회복지실천은 사회복지 서비스 제공자와 대상자로 구분되는 2차적 관계가 아니라 가족의 개념인 1차적 관계를 형성하는 가족 공동체의 실현, 그리고 기독교 영성과 사회복지 전문성이 결합된 귀일원의 복지 모델을 탄생시켰다. 최근 들어 새로운 복지 제도들의 도입과 더불어 기독교계의 사회복지에 대한 높은 관심은 바람직한 현상이다. 기독교의 사회복지 참여는 사회 전반의 의식수준 향상과 더불어 단순한 진입의 문제가 아닌 질 높은 수준의 질을 요구하는 단계로 진화하고 있다. 교회가 사회복지 현장에 참여하려면 기독교적 영성과 사회복지의 전문성으로 철저하게 준비되어야만 한다. 이현필의 귀일원 모델은 사회복지에 관심을 갖고 있는 한국교회에 시사점을 제시하고 있다. 끝으로 이현필 공동체와 같이 영적으로 무장되어 이웃과 함께하라는 주님의 명령을 감당해 낼 수 있는 교회들이 많이 나오기를 기대한다. Since Christianity was introduced in South Korea in the 1880s, it has developed significantly over the past hundred years. However, currently the Korean church has reached a stagnant period and given this soul-searching time, the issues of spirituality and community service have surfaced. The purpose of this thesis is to trace the life, spirituality, and social welfare activities of Lee Hyun-pil and evaluate how his activities have affected the social welfare realm in order to provide implications to the Korean churches that have interest in community service. This research has been implemented based on relevant literature. Lee practiced sharing and serving others which resembled Jesus Christ' life. Lee's Christian spirituality can be represented by terms such as honest poverty, purity, martyrdom, love, guilty conscience. Lee and his followers assisted and took care of the socially weak based on Christian spirituality. This social welfare practice was not a secondary relationship which is between social welfare recipient and service provider, but a first-hand relationship of family. Thus, it has resulted in the birth of Gwiilwon, a social welfare model of family community realization, Christian spirituality, and social welfare professionalism. The current trend of introducing new welfare policies and the fact that the Christian society is highly interested in social welfare is highly desirable. In order for the church to participate in the field of social welfare, Christian spirituality and social welfare speciality must be thoroughly prepared. Lee Hyun-pil's model of Gwiilwon proves as an ideal solution.

본 논문은 한국 기독교의 영성운동과 사회봉사의 관계를 고찰하였다. 먼저, 기독교 영성이 무엇인지 알아보았다. 기독교 영성학자 샌드라 쉬나이더스(Sandra Schneiders)의 영성의 정의를 바탕으로 기독교 영성이 무엇인가를 자세히 살펴보았다. 다음으로, 위에서 살펴본 정의를 바탕으로 기독교 영성이 사회봉사와 어떤 관계가 있는지를 제시하였다. 마지막으로, 한국기독교 영성과 사회봉사의 관계를 보여주는 대표적인 두 가지 운동 즉, 귀일원과 다일공동체를, 그 출발점과 사회봉사의 관계, 영성훈련의 특징이라는 측면에서 고찰하였다. 결론적으로, 두 운동 모두 예수를 사랑하고 예수를 따르려는 것이 모든 활동의 동기였으며, 특히 사회봉사활동은 그 동기에서 나오는 자연스러운 영성훈련이었다. This paper studies the relationship between Korean Christian spirituality and social service. First, it deals with the definition of Christian spirituality. Using the definition of spirituality by Sandra Schneiders, this paper explores various aspects of Christian spirituality. Second, based on the definition, it develops how Christian spirituality relates to social service. Finally, this paper explores two representative Christian spiritual movements, Guiilwon and Dail Community, focusing on its beginning, its perspective on social service, and spiritual practices. In sum, for both movements, the motivations are to love and follow Jesus Christ and all their activities including social service have been naturally flowed from those motivations.
