On Some “Early Palaeolithic” Evidence of Japan – A Personal Observation

일본의 구석기시대 연구에서 소위 “전기구석기”에 대해서는 아직 많은 점이 불확실하다. 일본의 “전기구석기”가 “Lower Palaeolithic”이 아니라 “Early Palaeolithic”이라고 번역되고 있다는 점이 말해주듯, 이 용어는 1965년 전형적인 후기구석기가 등장하기 이전의 시기를 가리키는 일본학계의 특유한 개념이다. “전기구석기”와 관련된 자료는 1950년대와 60년대에 도호쿠대학 조사단이 발견한 자료가 아직도 중심을 이루고 있으며, 그 대표적인 유적으로는 오이타 현의 소즈다이 유적, 나가사키 현의 후쿠이 동굴 유적, 군마 현의 공게야마 유적, 무코야마 유적, 호시노 유적 등을 꼽을 수 있다. 소즈다이 유적의 경우, 소위 구석기층의 연대가 4만 년 전보다 앞선 시기일 가능성이 있지만, 유물로 분류된 석기중 많은 것은 자연적으로 만들어졌을 가능성이 있다고 여겨진다. 그러나 일부 석영제 석기와 멀리 떨어진 산지로부터 수입되었을 가능성이 있는 원석이 존재할 가능성을 감안한다면, 구석기 유물이 살아남아 있을 가능성을 배제할 수는 없을 것이다. 무코야마 및 호시노에서 수습된 자료 중 많은 것은 석기로 분류 함에 문제가 없다고 보인다. 1950년대에 공게야마 및 인근의 여러 지점에서 발견된 자료는 세련된 형태의 석기임에 틀림없다고 보인다. 유적의 층서 파악이 불가능한 현 시점에서 더 이상의 평가는 불가능하 지만, 그 전반적 형태와 기법은 유럽의 중기 구석기를 연상시키는 점이 있다. 전반적으로 볼 때 아직 많은 점이 불확실하지만, 일본에 보다 전형적 후기구석기 보다 이른 시기의 구석기 자료가 존재할 가능성은 크다고 여겨진다.

On Some “Early Palaeolithic” Evidence of Japan – A Personal Observation

This paper is a brief summary report of observations concerning the “Early Palaeolithic” problem of Japan. The existence of the “Early Palaeolithic” in Japan can be discussed with chronological and stratigraphic evaluation of the relevant sites and artifacts. Several key sites—Sozudai, Hoshino, Mukoyama, Gongenyama, Kiribara, Yamanoderayama and Fujiyama—are re-evaluated in terms of their lithic artifact composition, site formation, and their geological contexts. Notwithstanding that all of the suggested candidates are not to be genuine Japanese “Early Palaeolithic,” there is no reason to neglect the existence of early materials since the Japanese archipelago had been connected to the mainland Asia on and off to provide plenty of chances for early hominids to move into. Being covered by deep layers of volcanic materials, perhaps such earlier archaeological data are to be found; especially, specimens from the Akagi Mountain area shed a strong light on the possibility that the “Early Paleolithic” evidence will be found in the future, or that at least earlier sequence of Japanese palaeolithic would not be much different from that of neighboring areas.
