대통령 후보자 토론 노출이 젊은 층 현안 인식에 미치는 영향관계: 현안의 직간접 연관성, 정향욕구, 경성뉴스 및 연성뉴스를 중심으로

선행연구는 대통령 후보자 토론이 공중이 지각하는 현안의 중요성에 영향을 미친다고 설명하지만 현안의 차별성을 감안하지 않은 한계점이 있다. 현안은 젊은 층의 삶과 직결된 문제와 간접적으로 연관된 문제로 구분된다. 본 연구는 이 점을 주목해 현안을 젊은 층이 당면한 현실과 직접 연관되는 유형과 간접적으로 연관되는 유형으로 구분해 실제대통령 후보자 토론이 간접적으로 연관되는 현안을 강조할 때 젊은 층이 지각하는 현안중요성이 어떻게 달라지는가를 분석했다. 통제실험 결과, 대통령 후보자 토론에 노출되는 경험은 간접적으로 연관되는 현안의 중요성을 증가시킨 것으로 나타났다. 반면에 젊은 층에게 직접 연관되는 현안의 중요성은 토론에 노출된 이후 오히려 감소했다. 이는 대통령후보자들이 강조하는 현안의 중요성이 개입한 것으로 풀이된다. 젊은 층이 현안, 사실, 언론에 대해 갖는 정향욕구는 ‘대미관계’, ‘한국과 중국, 러시아, 일본과의 관계’의 중요성 인식에 영향을 미쳤으며 젊은 층이 소비하는 경성뉴스와 연성뉴스라는 뉴스유형은 ‘개인부채’의 중요성 인식에 영향을 미쳤다. Previous research explains that presidential debates influence young adults’ perceived importance of issues, but it does not consider the differential nature of issues. Issues are divided into issues directly relevant to young adults’ reality and those indirectly relevant to their reality. By focusing on this nature of issues, this study classifies issues into directly relevant issues to young adults’ reality and indirectly relevant issues and examines how young adults perceive the importance of issues when presidential candidates emphasize indirectly relevant issues. As a result of a controlled experiment, an exposure to the presidential debate increases the perceived importance of indirectly relevant issues. By contrast, the perceived importance of directly relevant issues is decreased after the exposure to the presidential debate. This indicates that the importance of issues highlighted by presidential candidates influence the young adults’ perception of issues. Their need for orientation toward issues, facts, and journalistic evaluations influences the perceived importance of the relationship between South Korea and USA and that of the relationship of South Korea with China, Russia, and Japan. The news type such as hard news and soft news that the young adults consume influences the perceived importance of personal debt.

대통령 후보자 TV토론에 나타난 현안의 현실 연관성이 젊은 유권자들이 지각하는 현안의 중요성에 미치는 효과

This study examines whether the relevance of issues emphasized by presidential candidates influences young adults’ perception of the importance of the issues by considering a verbal frame (real debate versus fictional debate) and an audio frame (natural voice versus altered voice). The results of a controlled experiment show that young adults exposed to the real-debate frame and those exposed to the fictional debate frame pay attention to the importance of the issues emphasized in the debates. Accordingly, framing effects are not found and the perceived importance of issues is increased after the exposure to the debate, referring to the agenda-setting effects of presidential debates on the public perception of issues. In particular, the issues the candidates emphasize are related to the reality that young adults face, which means that the relevance of issues to the reality is important. The issue of solutions to North Korean nuclear problems is considered to be most important by young adults exposed to the real-debate frame and the fictional-debate frame. Young adults’ need for orientation toward issues and facts has significant effects on their perception of issue importance. In addition, young adults’ need for orientation toward facts is significantly interacted with issues, which influences their perceived importance of issues.
