In this paper, the trend of studies of automotive ergonomics in Korea is reviewed to contribute to R&D for the high quality and more competitive products of vehicles in the world. First of all, ergonomic and emotional engineering approach, and its subjects are suggested briefly for providing the concept to non-ergonomist. Activities and papers of, mainly, KSAE and ESK for past ten years are surveyed and reviewed only in terms of automotive ergonomics. In results, driving task performance, and ergonomic design factors of vehicle such as cab, safety device, seat, ITS, controls and displays, and so on have been studying partly. But, these subjects have been studying mainly by ergonomists since 2000. It means the study of automotive ergonomics in Korea is the beginning step up to now. Therefore, it is needed that automotive engineers make actively effort to introduce ergonomic approach to their researches, also it is recommended that automotive engineer and ergonomist will be a co-operator in this field.

In this paper, a designing case of the Formula-style vehicle for KSAE student Formula competition is introduced. The 250cc engine vehicle is built for the competition and the designing process is composed of five modules. During the designing project, the fundamental performance of the modules was evaluated using FEM. For example, the frame design was focused on weight reduction and it was built by CATIA V5, and FEM method was used to analyze the designed frame on static and dynamic characteristics. In case of optimized the cowl shape, FLUENT was used to get the drag and lift coefficient from the cowl shape. In detail, to optimize the cowl shape, aerodynamic modeling was carried out and the final shape was determined. As a result, the 250cc engine vehicle for KSAE student Formula competition was built and the fundamental performance was investigated.

The KSAE Baja, a race held by Korean Society of Automotive Engineers annually, designated a weight regulation. So the most important factor is the engine’s performance. For this, the engine’s components need modification and after this tuning , it needs the optimization procedure of fuel control and ignition timing due to the change of the air flow. This research is to apply the electronic control system to the mechanical control system, the carburetor, and modify the engine’s components to gain more performance.

This paper presents the procedure to design a space frame car with lightweight and high performance based on the restrictions imposed by the KSAE Baja rules. The initial concept design is performed to identify the location of space frames by means of topology optimization considering stiffness, strength and natural frequencies. Detail designs of different number of frames with the same total weight are proposed and the performances are compared to evaluate the effectiveness.
