언어적 기호가 지시하도록 의도되는 사물이 실제로 존재하지 않는 경우 그 언어적 기호는 과연 유의미한가? 만일 그렇다면 그 같은 유의미성이 어떻게 가능한가? 이는 프레게가 그의 고전적인 1892년 논문 “뜻과 지시체에 관하여”에서 다루는 문제들 중의 하나이다. 우리는 프레게가 그 문제를 풀기 위하여 언어적 기호의 뜻(Sinn)과 지시체(Bedeutung)를 구분하고 언어적 기호는 그것이 지칭하는 지시체를 결하더라도 어떤 뜻을 소유함을 통해 그 유의미성을 확보한다는 입장을 개진했다고 종종 듣는다. 이것이 지시체 없는 뜻의 문제에 관한 이른바 더밋 류의 고전적인 프레게 해석이다. 그런데 비교적 근래에 새롭게 제시되었지만 적지 않은 영향력을 끼치는 에반스의 해석에 따르면, 지시체가 없는 표현에 뜻을 귀속시킬 수 있는 이론적 근거의 여지가 프레게 의미론의 틀속에 사실상 존재하지 않는다. 이 두 해석 중 어느 것이 더 타당할까? 지시체 없는 뜻의 문제에 관한 프레게의 확정적이고 최종적인 입장은 무엇일까? 이 물음들과 관련하여 본 논문에서 필자는, 우리가 통상적으로 간주해 온 것과는 사뭇 달리 지시체 없는 뜻의 문제에 대한 프레게의 실제 입장이 상당히 애매하며 그리고 바로 그 애매성이 그 문제에 대한 더밋과 에반스의 상호 모순적인 해석에 나름대로의 타당성을 각각 제공하기에 프레게의 입장은 어떤 형태의 이론적인 수정 내지 관점의 변경을 필요로 한다고 주장한다. 필자는 그 주장이 어떻게 성립하는지를 밝히면서, 지시체 없는 뜻의 문제에 대한 프레게의 난점이 어떤 방식에서 보다 더 적절하게 해결될 수 있는지를 언어의 지향성과 정신의 지향성 사이의 병행성과 그 특징을 해명함으로써 제시한다. Could the linguistic signs that do not have any referents in the world be meaningful? If so, how is such meaningfulness possible? This is one of the main issues that Frege dealt with in the classical 1892 paper 'On Sense and Reference'. We are often told that in order to solve the problem, Frege made a distinction between the sense and reference of a linguistic sign, and provided the view that even if a linguistic expression lacks a referent, it can in principle be meaningful by way of having a sense (or senses) associated with that expression. This is the classical interpretation of Frege's semantics suggested by Dummett and his followers. Meanwhile, according to the recent new interpretation made by Evans, in Frege's semantics there is no real theoretical room for ascribing a sense (or senses) to the expression that lacks a referent. Between those two interpretations of Frege's semantics, which is correct? What could be Frege's ultimate solution for the puzzle about sense without reference? In this paper the author argues that Frege's real position concerning the philosophical issue is, in fact, quite ambiguous, and that since the ambiguity seems to bring about the two opposing interpretations in question, Frege's stance on the issue requires some theoretical modifications or a change of view. The author, while trying to make the claim clear, suggests how to overcome Frege's ambiguity about the problem of sense without reference, chiefly by means of clarifying the parallelism between the intentionality of language and that of the mind.
