이 글은 ‘『화엄경』「보현행원품」의 사상과 문학적 담론’에 대하여 문학의 敍事構造와 散文그리고 韻文의 特性, 이품(品)에 함의된 철학적 특성을 중심으로 살펴본 논문이다. 동서고금을 막론하고 불후의 명작이라 불리는 고전작품은 예술성과 윤리성이라는 두 개의 정신이 서로 알맞게 조화를 이루고 상호 보완적인 관계 속에 놓여있는 것을 목격할 수 있다. 본 논문에서 살펴본 『화엄경』보현행원의 10가지 행원의 노래는 이러한 정신을 含意하고 있는데, 여기서 고도의 문학적 장치를 사용하고 있다는 것을 알 수 있다. 보현행원품 은 『화엄경』의 마지막 결론에 해당되는 내용으로, 선재동자의 구법행각의 마지막 장면에 포함되는 품으로, 이 글의 목적은 『화엄경』「보현행원품」에 대한 문학적인 접근을 통해서 『화엄경』 「보현행원품」에 담긴 서사구조와 산문, 그리고 운문의 특성을 해석함으로써, 문학적 담론을 분석해보고자 하는데 있다. 이를 통해서 기대되는 효과는 대승경전의 문학성과 보현행원품 에 담긴 문학적 담론에 따른 인본주의적인 접근의 효율성을 높일 수 있다는 것이다. 왜냐하면 『화엄경』「보현행원품」은 설화적․종교적․교리적 차원의 단순한 경전이 아닌 대승적․독창적․문학적 차원의 수승하고 창조적이면서도 풍부한 문학담론과 예술적인 작품성을 동시에 구비하고 있기 때문에, 병든 현대인의 정신을 치유할 수 있다. 불교는 깨달음과 실천이 항상 동행하는 것[上求菩提下化衆生]이라 할 수 있는데, 이것을 「보현행원품」에서 여지없이 보여주고 있다. 따라서 「보현행원품」 은 悟道를 지향하는 모든 구도자의 피나는 수행에 대한 결과는 반드시 보현보살의 10가지 행원으로 귀결되어야 한다는 메시지를 던져주는 감동적인 가르침이라 할 수 있다. This paper aims to explore the literary narrative structure as well as the prose and verse characteristics with regards to the philosophy and literary discourse of Bohyeonhaeng wonpum普賢行願品, (Buddha)avatasakasūtra華嚴經. All classical works extolled as immortal masterpieces across the ages and in all countries of the world feature two spirits of artistry and ethics combined in a harmonious manner while in a position of mutually complementing each other. The 10 songs of Haegnwon by Bohyeon Haegnwon (the vow of practice of Samantabhadra) examined in this paper imply these spirits with the use of a sophisticated literary device. Bohyeonhaengwonpum corresponds to the concluding part of (Buddha)avatasakas.tra, which is included in the last scene of Seonjae Dongja (young Sudhana) in his quest of the Buddha-Dharma. The purpose of this paper is to interpret the narrative structure and the prose and verse characteristics contained in Bohyeonhaengwonpum, Hwaeomgyeong [(Buddha)avatasakas.tra] through literary approach and to analyze its literary discourse, through which we will be able to raise the efficiency of humanistic approach in accordance with the literary value of the Mahayana Buddhist Scriptures and the literary discourse contained in Bohyeonhaengwonpum. This is attributed to the fact that Bohyeonhaeng wonpum, Hwaeomgyeong[(Buddha)avatasakas.tra]possesses its superior creativity in a broad, unique and literary viewpoint as well as esthetic artistry beyond the scope of simple scriptures in the sense of tale, religion, and doctrine, and thus can be used to cure ailing spirits of modern-day people, therefore, acknowledging that Buddhism should always be accompanied by enlightenment and practice. [上求菩提下化衆生] Bohyeonhaengwonpum gives us heart-touching lessons with a message that the results from practicing the excruciating path of enlightenment in pursuit of spiritual awakening will eventually lead to the ten vows or aspirations of Bodhisattva Samantabhadra.
