Venture Capital Syndicates Network : Formation, Evolution and the Architecture

본 논문은 미국 벤처투자 산업의 발전과정의 중요한 특징들을 반영하여 벤처 캐피털 신디케이트 네트워크의 형성과 진화과정을 단순한 게임 모델로 모형화하여 벤처 캐피털 신디케이트 네트워크의 구조양식을 도출한다. 우선, 비협조적 네트워크 형성 게임 모델의 제약으로 작동하는, ‘상호 동의에 의한 네트워크 형성’ 의 난제를 벤처 거래흐름의 호혜성과 벤처 투자기업들 간의 신뢰라는 벤처투자 산업 고유의 특징을 통해 해결하면서, 지역 네트워크 형성게임을 협조적 게임이나 순차적 게임이 아닌 동시 진행 게임 모형으로 단순화한다. 벤처 산업의 발전과정 초기에 지역 벤처 네트워크의 형성과정을 통해 ‘주변부-지원 스타’ 형태의 네트워크가 형성됨을 보여준다. 지역 네트워크 형성과 거의 동시에 각 지역 네트워크의 중심부를 차지하는 최고 실적 기업들 간의 네트워크 형성과정을 통해 전국적 연결이 성립되는 과정도 모형화하고 있다. 이어서 대규모의 신규 진입으로 인한 벤처 캐피털 네트워크의 진화과정을 모형화하여 벤처 신디케이트 네트워크의 구조의 밀도가 높아지면서 진화하여, ‘상호 연결된, 다층적, 주변부-지원 스타’ 네트워크 형태를 도출한다. 본 논문은 ‘상호 동의에 의한 네트워크 형성’ 이슈와 ‘게임 행위자들의 이질성’을 벤처캐피털 신디케이트 네트워크 형성과정의 특성을 통해 단순한 게임모형의 틀 안에서 결합시키고, 벤처캐피털 기업 간 네트워크 형태를 구체적으로 도출한 데 의의가 있다. 또한, ‘상호 동의’ 문제를 본격적으로 다루거나 네트워크게임 행위자들의 ‘이질성’의 유형을 일반화시킨 모델 또는 진정한 ‘동학적’ 모델의 개발을 향후 과제로 제시하고 있다. This paper develops a simple network formation game model that recapitulates the critical phases in the history of the Venture Capital (VC) industry. With the reciprocity of deal flows and trust among VC firms in the same local VC market, we simplify this network formation game as a simultaneous-move directed network formation game. The local fragmentation and the global connectivity were two distinct features in the early history of VC industry. The former is driven by the new entrants at the regional level (or local level) and the latter is by incumbent firms that seek diversification. Our model details the formation of the local VC syndicate networks and the global connectivity in the whole VC syndicates network. Also, with the massive influx of new entrants, the VC industry evolved into an interlinked, multi-layer, periphery-sponsored stars network, which is also evidenced by the history of the VC industry.
