이 글은 선조조에 활동한 金誠一(1538~1593)의 학자ㆍ관료적 삶, 通信使 復命 및 임진왜란 당시 활동상에 대한 士林들의 인식과 평가를 살표보고, 그것이 지니는 의미를 짚어보는데 목적이 있다. 특히 후자와 관련해서는 서인계의 ‘失報誤國論’과 남인계의 ‘嶺南再造論’이 지니는 지극히 차별적인 인식 및 평가구조의 형성 과정과 그 내용의 분석에 역점을 두었다 ‘실보오국론’은 사행 보고에 초점을 둔 인식이고 ‘영남재조론’은 임란 때의 활동상에 주안점을 둔 평가라는 점에서 그 인식과 평가의 사안 또는 대상이 서로 달랐으며, 각기 선조 및 서인계와 남인계의 입장을 강조하고 있다는 점에서는 둘 다 정치적인 성격을 강하게 띄고 있었다. 따라서 김성일이 인식과 평가는 그의 사후에 더 정치적인 관점에서 다루어진 성격이 있었고, 또 두 논의는 일종의 攻守構造를 형성하면서 自作論理로 흐른 측면을 배제할 수 없었다. 이 글에서는 이들 두 논리의 전개 과정 및 문제점을 아울러 검토하여 김성일을 바라보는 두 관점의 바닥에 까린 정서와 주장의 실체를 해명하는데 논점을 집중시켰다. This article focused on the recognition and evaluation of Kim Seong-il(1538~1593), a scholar and a bureaucrat who lived in the King Seonjo period, by Sarim faction. The main points are his life as a scholar and a bureaucrat, a report of the emissary dispatched to Japan by the king of Joseon in 1590 and his remarkable activities in Japanese invasion of 1592. Especially two theories are suggested. One of the two is the theory of a national crisis caused by misinformation ? the opinion of Westerner, and the other is the theory of reconstruction of nation led by Yeongnam people ? the opinion of Southerner. While the former focus on the report, the latter focus on the activities of battle field. Two points of view in this regard are concerned with different objects and issues of recognition and evaluation. That reflects their political viewpoints of the Westerner with the King Seonjo and the Southerner. Therefore it seemed that the recognition and evaluation of Kim Seong-il was developed actively after his death, the mechanism of offenses and defenses have changed their own logic. In addition this article has dealt with development and problems of two theories, it will contribute to understand reality about recognition and evaluation Kim Seong-il.
