Multi-objective design exploration (MODE) and its applications are reviewed as an attempt to utilize numerical simulation in aerospace engineering design. MODE reveals the structure of the design space based on trade-off information. A self-organizing map (SOM) is incorporated into MODE as a visual data mining tool for the design space. SOM divides the design space into clusters with specific design features. This article reviews existing visual data mining techniques applied to engineering problems. Then, we discuss three applications of MODE: multidisciplinary design optimization for a regional-jet wing, silent supersonic technology demonstrator and centrifugal diffusers.
A Fault Detection Method of Redundant IMU Using Modified Principal Component Analysis

A fault detection process is necessary for high integrity systems like satellites, missiles and aircrafts. Especially, the satellite has to be expected to detect faults autonomously because it cannot be fixed by an expert in the space. Faults can cause critical errors to the entire system and the satellite does not have sufficient computation power to operate a large scale fault management system. Thus, a fault detection method, which has less computational burden, is required. In this paper, we proposed a modified PCA (Principal Component Analysis) as a powerful fault detection method of redundant IMU (Inertial Measurement Unit). The proposed method combines PCA with the parity space approach and it is much more efficient than the others. The proposed fault detection algorithm, modified PCA, is shown to outperform fault detection through a simulation example.
Optimal Path Planning for UAVs to Reduce Radar Cross Section

Parameter optimization technique is applied to planning UAVs(Unmanned Aerial Vehicles) path under artificial enemy radar threats. The ground enemy radar threats are characterized in terms of RCS(Radar Cross Section) parameter which is a measure of exposure to the radar threats. Mathematical model of the RCS parameter is constructed by a simple mathematical function in the three-dimensional space. The RCS model is directly linked to the UAVs attitude angles in generating a desired trajectory by reducing the RCS parameter. The RCS parameter is explicitly included in a performance index for optimization. The resultant UAVs trajectory satisfies geometrical boundary conditions while minimizing a weighted combination of the flight time and the measure of ground radar threat expressed in RCS.

This paper targets a direct and quantitative prediction of characteristics of unstable waves in a combustion chamber, which employs the governing equations derived in terms of amplification factors of flow variables. A freshly formulated nonlinear acoustic equation is obtained and the analysis of unsteady waves in a rocket engine is attempted. In the present formalism, perturbation method decomposes the variables into time-averaged part that can be obtained easily and accurately and time-varying part which is assumed to be harmonic. Excluding the use of conventional spatially sinusoidal eigenfunctions, a direct numerical solution of wave equation replaces the initial spatial distribution of standing waves and forms the nonlinear space-averaged terms. Amplification factor is also calculated independently by the time rate of changes of fluctuating variables, and is no longer an explicit function for compulsory representation. Employing only the numerical computation, major assumptions inevitably inherent, and in erroneous manner, in up to date analytical methods could be avoided. With two definitions of amplification factor, 1-D stable wave and 3-D unstable wave are examined, and clearly demonstrated the potentiality of a suggested theoretical-numerical method of combustion instability.
Path Tracking Controller Design and Simulation for Korean Lunar Lander Demonstrator

In Korea, Lunar exploration program has been prepared with the aim of launching in the 2020's. As a part of it, a lunar lander demonstrator was developed, which was the model for verifying the system such as structure, propulsion, and control system, before launching into the deep space. This paper deals with the path tracking performance of the lunar lander demonstrator with respect to the thruster controller based on Pulse Width Pulse Frequency Modulator (PWPFM) and Pulse Width Modulator (PWM). First, we derived equations of motion, considering the allocation of the thrusters, and designed the path tracking controller based on Euler angle. The signal generated from the path tracking controller is continuous, so PWPFM and PWM modulator are adopted for generating ON/OFF signal. Finally, MATLAB simulation is performed for evaluating the path tracking ability. We compared the path tracking performances of PWPFM and PWM based thrust controller, using performance measures such as the total impulse and the position error with respect to the desired path.
A Geometric Compression Method Using Dominant Points for Transmission to LEO Satellites

In the operation of a low earth orbit satellite, a series of antenna commands are transmitted from a ground station to the satellite within a visibility window (i.e., the time period for which an antenna of the satellite is visible from the station) and executed to control the antenna. The window is a limited resource where all data transmission is carried out. Therefore, minimizing the transmission time for the antenna commands by reducing the data size is necessary in order to provide more time for the transmission of other data. In this paper, we propose a geometric compression method based on B-spline curve fitting using dominant points in order to compactly represent the antenna commands. We transform the problem of command size reduction into a geometric problem that is relatively easier to deal with. The command data are interpreted as points in a 2D space. The geometric properties of the data distribution are considered to determine the optimal parameters for a curve approximating the data with sufficient accuracy. Experimental results demonstrate that the proposed method is superior to conventional methods currently used in practice.

For robust stability analysis of parameters uncertainty missiles, the traditional frequency domain method can only analyze each respective channel at several interval points within uncertain parameter space. Discontinuous calculation and couplings between channels will lead to inaccurate analysis results. A method based on the ${\nu}$-gap metric is proposed, which is able to comprehensively evaluate the robust stability of missiles with uncertain parameters; and then a genetic-simulated annealing hybrid optimization algorithm, which has global and local searching ability, is used to search for a parameters combination that leads to the worst stability within the space of uncertain parameters. Finally, the proposed method is used to analyze the robust stability of a re-entry missile with uncertain parameters; the results verify the feasibility and accuracy of the method.
Effect of the spanwise grid spacing and treatment of convection term in DES

A two-dimensional backward facing step flow was comptuted using a Detached Eddy simulation(DES) based on the SST turbulence model. The expansion ratio(ER) was 1.125 and the Reynolds number based on the step height and the mean velocity in the upstream channel was 37,500. The flow condition was the same as with the experimental research[1]. The reattachment length, oscillatory characteristics of the flow and the coherent structures of the present simulation were compared to demonstrate the improtance of spanwise grid spacing.
Dynamic Simulation and Analysis of the Space Shuttle Main Engine with Artificially Injected Faults

Securing the safety and the reliability of liquid-propellant rocket engines (LREs) for space vehicles is indispensable as engines consist of many complex components and operate under extremely high energy-dense conditions. Thus, health monitoring has become a mandatory requirement, especially for the reusable LREs that are currently being developed. In this context, a dynamic simulation program based on MATLAB/Simulink was developed in the current research on the Space Shuttle Main Engine (SSME), a partly reusable engine. Then, a series of fault simulations using this program was conducted: at a steady state operating condition (104% Rated Propulsion Level), various simulated fault conditions were artificially injected into the simulation models for the five major valves, the pumps, and the turbines of the SSME. The consequent effects due to each fault were analyzed based on the time responses of the major parameters of the engine. It is believed that this research topic is an essential pre-step for the development of fault detection and diagnosis algorithms for reusable engines in the future.

For next generation global navigation satellite systems, new carrier frequencies in Ku/V band are expected to emerge as a promising alternative to the current frequency windows in L band as they get severely congestive. In the case of higher frequency bands, signal attenuation phenomenon through the atmosphere is significantly different from the L band signal propagation. In this paper, a fundamental investigation is carried out to explore the Ku/V band as a candidate frequency band for a new global satellite navigation carrier signal, wherein specific attention is given to the effects of the dominant attenuation factors through the tropospheric propagation path. For a specific application, a candidate orbit preliminarily designed for the Korean regional satellite navigation system is adapted. Simulation results summarize that the Ku band can provide a promising satellite navigation implementation considering the present satellite's power budget, while the V band still requires technical advances in satellite transceiver system implementations.
