디셈버 비: 알란 에이크번의 『마음 속의 여자』에 나타난 극적 아이러니
장금희 현대영미어문학회 2021 현대영미어문학 Vol.39 No.3
This essay aims to analyze the dramatic irony of reality and fantasy in Alan Ayckbourn’s Woman in Mind focusing on the transition of being illogical, which leads to the fantasy world in the mind of Susan, the central character of the play, who experiences mental illness. As a farcical comedy, the play deals with the dark side of human nature by depicting the development of incomprehensive destructiveness of a woman who suffers pain, frustration, and despair trapped in her mental delusion due to the absence of communication among families. Throughout the action of Woman in Mind, it reveals the boredom of the English middle class and the broader societal issues of modern English culture. This essay also explores how Ayckbourn dramatizes the dark and abstract line of consciousness between fantasy and reality through a simultaneous plot line with dramatic devices in order to draw sympathy and laughter from the audience with allegorical and passive elements and without a conventional comic ending.
Reappraisal of Sarty’s Growth in “Barn Burning”
신영헌 현대영미어문학회 2012 현대영미어문학 Vol.30 No.4
William Faulkner’s short story, “Barn Burning” has enjoyed much critical attention as one of his best short stories. However, there has not been much systematic and comprehensive analysis of the traits of the story as a bildungsroman. This article aims to analyze this short fiction by focusing on the procedure and the meaning of Sarty’s initiation. Isaac Sequeira offers three kinds of initiation: decisive, uncompleted and tentative. Similarly, Christopher Lalond points out that the rite of passage, which could be interchangeable with the word, initiation, consists of three stages: separation, transition, and incorporation. Using these crucial concepts, this essay tries to elucidate the effects Abner, Sarty’s father, has on his son in the whole process of his initiation. Abner’s aspect as a teacher provides a key to understanding his inconsistent and even abnormal behaviors such as provocative and unnecessary challenge against Major de Spain, a wealthy aristocrat and his landlord. Nevertheless, this thesis attempts to prove that Sarty ends up attaining spiritual growth, not owing to Abner’s instruction, but notwithstanding his guidance. In conclusion, Sarty’s maturity is completed through fighting against Abner’s aggressive and clannish world view.
“Our Wholemole millwheeling vicociclometer”(FW 614.27) -제임스 조이스 소설의 서술 스타일과 상호텍스트성-
변재길 ( Jay Gill Pyeon ) 현대영미어문학회 1993 현대영미어문학 Vol.11 No.-
This essay comparatively studies the ways of Joycean narrative styles, including narrative irony & cyclic parody, in Joycean fictions, A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man, Ulysses, & Finnegans Wake, in which narrative indeterminacy decenters subjects for the absence of textual meaning oscillating through the cyclic Joycean texts. This article also shows that multileveled narrative techniques & themes metacritically evolving from the earlier text to Finnegans Woke develop Joycean intertextual narrative styles such as Viconian(cyclic) parody with the indeterminate perspectives & narration intermixed. Thus writing the text means inevitably the interpolation process beyond the text itself, in which readers must play active roles in searching for the intertextual/disseminated meaning in the text.
