Pseudostellaria heterophylla is a traditional medical plant used 3,000 years. It contrains polysaccharides, ginseng sapoinins, flavonoids, cyclic peptides, amino acids, and trace element. However, this is the incomplete of research on the Pseudostellaria heterophylla. In this study, we have investigated the anti-dementia effects of Pseudostellaria heterophylla on hot water extract on scopolamine-induced memory impairment in ICR male mice. To determine the effect of Pseudostellaria heterophylla on the cognitive dysfunction, we have injected scopolamine (1 ㎎/㎏, i.p.) in ICR male mice and conducted Y-maze, passive avoidance tests. Scopolamineinduced an array of behavior changes of memory impairments were recovered by oral administration of Pseudostellaria heterophylla (100, 200 or 400 ㎎/㎏). To further verify the acethylcholinestrase activity effect of Pseudostellaria heterophylla on the scopolmaine-induced memory impairment, Donepezil (positive control) on expression of IC50 was 0.007 ㎕/㎖, and then Pseudostellaria heterophylla on expression of IC50 was 0.02 ㎕/㎖. Pseudostellaria heterophylla (Miq.) Pax. et Hoffm treatment down-regulated the acetylcholine esterase activity enhanced scopolamine-induced memory impairment. These results suggest that enhanced may have preventive and/or therapeutic potentials in the management of dementia.
억간산이 PTU (6-n-propyl-2-thiouracil)로 유발된 Rat 갑상샘 기능저하증에 미치는 영향

PURPOSE : The object of this study was to evaluate the effect of Ukgansan (UKS), aqueous extracts of mixed herbal formula consisted of nine herbs - Angelicae Gigantis Radix, Atractylodes Macrocephalae Rhizoma, Hoelen, Rhynchophylla Ramulusi, Cnidii Rhizoma, Bupleuri Radix, Glycyrrhizae Radix, Citri Pericarpium and Pinelliae Rhizoma on the PTU-induced rat hypothyroidism METHODS : 6 groups, each of 8 rats per group were used in the present study as follows. Aqueous extracts of UKS were administered, once day for 42 days from 2 weeks before start of PTU treatment as an oral dose of 200, 100 and 50 ㎎/㎏ (body weight), and hypothyroidism was induced by daily subcutaneous treatment of PTU 10 ㎎/㎏ for 28 days. The changes on the body weight, thyroid gland, liver, epididymis and testis weights, serum thyroid hormone (TSH, T3 and T4) levels, serum male sex hormone (testosterone, DHT and FSH) levels, serum lipid profiles (total cholesterol, LDL, HDL and triglyceride), liver and testis antioxidant defense system (lipid peroxidation, H2O2, SOD and CAT), serum AST and ALT levels were observed with histopathology of thyroid gland, liver, epididymis and testis. Results were compared with LT4 0.5 ㎎/㎏ treated rats Experimental groups : 6 groups (8 rats per groups were used) 1. Intact control : saline treated instead of PTU, and distilled water orally administered group 2. PTU control : PTU subcutaneously treated and distilled water orally administered group 3. LT4 : PTU subcutaneously treated and LT4 0.5 ㎎/㎏ intraperitoneally treated group 4. UKS200 : PTU subcutaneously treated and UKS extracts 200 ㎎/㎏ orally administered group 5. UKS100 : PTU subcutaneously treated and UKS extracts 100 ㎎/㎏ orally administered group 6. UKS50 : PTU subcutaneously treated and UKS extracts 50 ㎎/㎏ orally administered group. RESULTS : As results of PTU treatment, marked decreases of body weights, increases of thyroid weights, liver, epididymis and testis weight decreases, serum T3, and T4 level decreases with increases of serum TSH levels, serum testosterone and DHT level decreases with increases of serum FSH levels, serum HDL increases and triglyceride content decreases, decreases of liver and testis antioxidant defense system, increases of serum AST levels were observed. In addition, marked hyperplasia of follicular cells with decreases of follicular colloid contents and sizes were demonstrated with decreases of hepatocyte numbers due to hypertrophy of hepatocytes and the increases of oligospermatic epididymal tubules at histopathological inspections. However, these PTU induced hypothyroidism were dose-dependently inhibited by treatment of UKS extracts, and UKS extracts effectively regulated the hypothyroidism related changes on the antioxidant defense system. CONCLUSION : The results obtained in this study suggest that UKS extracts have favorable effects on the thyroid hormone productions with beneficial effects on the hypothyroidism related liver and reproductive organ damages mediated by the modulatory effects on the antioxidant defense system.

Cynanchi Paniculati Radix is in use in eastern medicine. Eastern medical doctors use Cynanchi Paniculati Radix for eliminating wind and dampness(祛風濕), etc. We investigated toxicity, poisoning symptoms, side effect, poisoning treatment and prevention against poisoning of Cynanchi Paniculati Radix. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The main ingredients of poisoning are paeonol, etc. The ingredients of poisoning from Cynanchi Paniculati Radix mainly cause the numbness of mouth, etc. 2. The representative methods of poisoning treatment are stopping taking medicine and symptomatic treatment, etc. 3. In order to prevent against poisoning and side effect of Cynanchi Paniculati Radix, the patients should keep usage, dosage and notes.

Hydnocarpi Semen is in use in the Korean medicine. The Korean medical doctors use Hydnocarpi Semen for eliminating toxic material(攻毒), killing insects(殺蟲), eliminating wind and dampness(祛風濕), etc. We investigated toxicity, poisoning symptoms, poisoning treatment and prevention against poisoning of Hydnocarpi Semen. The results were summarized as follows: 1. The main ingredients of poisoning are oil of Hydnocarpi Semen, hydnocarpic acid sodium etc. The ingredients of poisoning from Hydnocarpi Semen mainly cause stimulating symptoms on digestive system, circulatory system, nervous system, urinary system, etc. 2. The representative methods of poisoning treatment in the Korean medicine take advantage of herbs, such as Glycyrrhizae Radix(甘草), Brassicae Pekinensis Folium(白 菜), etc. And the Korean medical doctors should meet symptoms as patients call for attention. 3. The representative methods in poisoning treatments in the western medicine are promotion of vomiting, washing out the stomach, causing diarrhea, supplies of grape sugar, inducing diuresis. And the medical doctors should meet symptoms as patients call for attention. 4. In order to prevent against poisoning of Hydnocarpi Semen, the patients should keep usage, dosage and notes.

Objective: We`ve research a tendency of how a study of Kimchi using herbal medicine and herbal food was developed. Methods: We investigated a recent tendency and functionality of herbal medicinal kimchi through researching studies and thesis of acadernic societies. Conclusion: Kimchi has demonstrated anticancer and weight reduction, cleaning of intestines, preventing blood clotting. It will be more conducted to produce more newly-developed various Kimchi and study of various functions and verification. A study of correct mechanism in process of fermentation and mature of Kimchi is required.
