이 글은 한국타이포그라피학회 학술지 »글짜씨«의 편집과 디자인을 개편한 기록이자 문제 제기이다. 나는 학술지가 단순한 논문 묶음이 아닌 그 자체로 하나의 연구 결과물이자 타이포그래피 작품이 되기를 바랐다. 나는 먼저 학술지의 개편 목적과 개편 전제기되었던 문제를 정리하고 주제와 언어, 발간 체계 등 구조적 문제를 살펴보았다. 다음으로 부문별 편집지침, 세부 표기법, 디자인과 제작을 검토했다. 논의는 개편 전체가 아닌 논쟁이 될 수 있는 부분을 중심으로 진행했다. 이 글은 1차 개편의 보고이자 2차 개편의 기반이다. 나는 현재 상태를 유지하는 것은 퇴보이며, 그것을 가장 경계해야 한다고 생각한다. »글짜씨«가 끊임없이 변화하는 학술지가 되기를 기대한다. This text is commentary and problem consideration upon the editing and design renewal work of »LetterSeed«, the Korean Society of Typography academic journal. I hoped this academic journal to be, instead of being a simple pile of individual papers, a research result by itself as well as a typography work. I rst summarized the renewal objectives and formerly raised issues. I then observed problems in the editing system including the theme, language and publishing process. Lastly, I revised sectional editing guidelines, detailed notations, design and production. In this article, I mainly focused on controversial parts instead of the entire renewal project. This is a report of the rst renewal project, as well as a foundation for the second renewal project. I believe maintaining the current state is retrogression, and we must be an alert to it. I look forward to the continuous evolution of »LetterSeed«.

I, as a researcher, wanted to summarize the role of graphic design in the flow of history of Korean professional sport, especially professional baseball, which was established in the political situation of the modern Korean history. And in this process, I could see the situation when the graphic design greeted the golden age, along with the extension of the concept of branding design. Especially I interpreted the ‘branding’ attempts of professional sports in the socio-cultural context, focusing on LG Twins; one of the metropolitan clubs in the first year of Korean Professional Baseball league. Based on this understanding, I examined the concept of branding in the Korean professional baseball market that has been changed with the times, and I also analyzed the visual characteristics of the LG Twins’ team in terms of semiotic, throughout the case studies. In addition, I attempted to do research on the similarity and symbolism of the elements that constitute the brand by comparing Korean Professional Baseball teams with Major League Baseball teams referred to at that time. This would be a preliminary research for further study to be carried out the branding methods about professional sports, in terms of the audience experiences.

이 연구는 한글과 다른 문자를 함께 조판할 때 발생하는 여러 기술적 문제를 정리해 한글 타이포그래피, 나아가 다국어 타이포그래피의 불완전성에 대해 논구한다. 그 목적은 한글 타이포그래피의 한계를 말하는 것이 아니라, 한편으로는 한글 타이포그래피에 잠재된 가능성과 앞으로의 과제를 검토하고, 다른 한편으로는 한국어 텍스트 조판에 관한 일반적 이해를 돕는 데 있다. 연구 범위는 문자의 경우 한글과 로마자, 아라비아 숫자로 제한하고, 사용된 여러 폰트가 비슷하게 보이는 가로쓰기 본문의 컴퓨터 조판을 과제로 삼는다. 활자는 한글 부리 활자와 로마자 세리프 활자로 제한하고, 프로그램은 어도비 인디자인 한글판과 폰트랩 스튜디오를 사용한다. 연구 구조는 실제 디자인 과정을 토대로 한다. 먼저 한국어 텍스트의 다국어적 환경과 디자인 프로그램이 제공하는 기술적 환경을 검토한다. 그런 다음 합성할 폰트를 고르고 설정할 때 발생하는 문제와 그것으로 조판할 때 발생하는 문제를 살핀다. 이어서 편집과 관련된 문제를 검토한다. 그리고 끝으로 다국어 타이포그래피의 불완전성에 관해 논구한다. In this study, I will discuss the incompleteness of multilingual typography by outlining a variety of technical problems with details that result from an occasion where Hangeul is typeset with other characters. The purpose of this study is not to reveal the limits of Hangeul typography but to look at its potential and issues and to promote general understanding of Korean typesetting. For the efficiency of the study, I adopted computer typesetting of horizontal body text where several different fonts look similar and used Hangeul, Roman characters and Arabic numerals only within the text. Hangeul’s buri (serif) and Roman serif are selected as typefaces on Adobe InDesign Korean version, and FontLab Studio as the editing software. This study follows the actual process of design. First, I will examine the multilingual environment of Korean text and the technical circumstances of the design software. Next, some problems about selecting, formatting and typesetting composite fonts will be reviewed followed by some issues regarding editing. Lastly, I will discuss the incompleteness of multilingual typography.

‹볼 만한 꼴불견›을 통해 본 1970년대 한국의 언어 경관

이 논문은 1970년대 한국의 대표적인 문화 교양지였던 «뿌리 깊은 나무»에 수록된 ‹볼 만한 꼴불견› 칼럼을 연구한다. ‹볼 만한 꼴불견›은 잡지발행인한창기의비전중언어와관련된생각이투영된고정 칼럼이었다. 스냅 사진과 짧은 설명문으로 구성된 쪽기사인 ‹볼 만한 꼴불견›은 거리 사인물을 둘러싼 한국의 1970년대 풍경을 제공할 뿐만 아니라, 당시 언어 정책 및 언어가 사회와 맺었던 관계에 대해 고찰해 볼 수 있는 여러 이슈를 던지고 있다. 본 연구는 ‘언어 경관’이라고 부르는 연구개념을적용시켜‹볼만한꼴불견›에나타난당대언어환경과이를 통해 이끌어 낼 수 있는 타이포그래피적 함의를 고찰해 본다. 결론에서 논문은 한자와 한글 등이 혼용된 간판, 브랜딩과 네이밍 등에서 드러난 표절 그리고 이미지로서의 로마자 사용과 같은 타이포그래피적 특징이 당대 공공 타이포그래피의 특징으로 드러났음을 밝힌다. 이는 궁극에 공공 영역에 놓인 타이포그래피가 언어와 사회의 관계가 만들어낸 이데올로기적 산물이자, 위로부터의 정책과 아래로부터의 일상의 욕망이 응축되어 있는 의미 쟁탈의 장소임을 확인하는 과정이기도 하다.

대각선 쓰기: 한글의 형태와 방향성을 고려한 쓰기 방법 실험

This paper is a visual experiment initiated by my curiosity to find out what sort of aesthetic information (method of artistic expression) of letters would appear if a letter (Hangeul) was written in seamless writing based on its form and direction (directionality). By interpreting and considering Hangeul from different angles, I attempted to expand the meaning and form of the letter, surpassing the primary function of communication (tool). With the new order, form, meaning and so on, which are assigned to this process as the principle, I was compelled to blur the conventional boundaries of typography, information graphics, and map design. Such categories blur into one contiguous whole. This new type of artwork, seamless writing, has two visual characteristics. One is that the form of seamless writing created by deconstructing Hangeul is read more like a map rather than words. And the other is that the deconstructed text is perceived to have quantitative meaning rather than textual meaning. This artwork is intended to allow viewers to see various points of view, unfolding the material as text that can be seen, as a picture that can be read, as a map, and as information graphics. Thus, expanding the multiplicity of methods that comprise of design language and proposing the possibility of the experimental method.

Sabon, created by Jan Tschichold in 1967, was not only a beautiful and functional type but an economic and efficient one for printers, publishers and readers. This study compares Sabon with two versions of Garamond in order to look into its beauty. In addition, the historical, social and technological signifiance attributed to Sabon by Tschichold will be reviewed as we examine the life of Jakob Sabon, who imported Garamond, the representative type of French Old Style in the mid and late 16th century, into Germany, and the circumstances under which he designed his Sabon.
