Vol.0 No.20
The Black Paintings are fourteen oil murals by Goya made between 1819 and 1823 in the “House of the Deaf Man.” They were transferred to canvas by Cubells between 1874 and 1878. In 1881 they were donated by their owner, Baron d’Erlanger, to the Prado Museum, where they have been exhibited since 1889. The paintings have been described as enigmatic or diabolic, and regarded difficult to interpret. I made the analysis that themes such as witches, devils, superstition, inquisition, etc. have been considered as anti theses of religion and enlightenment, and linked, directly or indirectly, to reality in his works of the late 1790’s, but in the Black Paintings represented the artist’s psychological state, which resulted from Caprichos; his conflicts between his old age and his ‘partner’ Leocadia’s youth, his angst over death, political terror, etc. These murals functioned as a healer for their producer, which is one of the dominant elements of modern art.
Vol.0 No.21
Under the hypothesis that the recent monochrome painting wave is drawn by the contemporary art market, this thesis examines the following three critical questions. The first question can imply, ‘As a truly independent school, can Korean monochrome painting be seen as the Korean art movement which has developed as the close ideology and the practical integration?’ The second question is the presentation of the problem on the established theory that is to say the white color is the Korean indigenous aesthetic sense. The third and last question is about the English notation, ‘Dansaekhwa’, as a qualification which regulated monochrome painting as a crystal of vigorous ideology.
Vol.11 No.-
This paper examines the recent exhibitions that reflect feminist global issues initiated and discussed by feminist artists, critics and curators in the U.S. and Korea. While the feminist exhibitions such as <Global Feminisms> and <WACK!> maintain strong western feminist legacies by accepting women artists from other cultures who learn the western feminist idioms, Korean feminist exhibitions attempt to expand its discourse to the feminist artists in the neighboring countries in Asia while respecting Korean traditions and positions. In this new terrain, the emergence of Incheon Women Artists’ Biennale further complicates the meaning of feminist-initiated exhibitions. The biennale, initiated by local women artists untrained by feminism, gradually grows into a large-scale global event and challenges the current status quo of Korean artists who have been divided into feminists and non-feminists, regional artists and global artists, progressives and conservatives, and etc.
Vol.0 No.25
The rapid industrialization in the 1960s and 1970s prompted Korean women to join the labor force en masse, supporting the export-driven economy of Korea. Their sufferings and struggles in the trammel of the unrelentingly patriarchal society became the subject of a series of films produced by female filmmakers in the 1990s and 2000s. These undertakings had a significant impact on the feminist culture movement in Korea. As a corollary of the women’s labor movement that strived to assert the right to unionize women labor and seek fair and equitable treatment in the workplace, the feminist culture movement in Korea exhibited different characteristics from Western bourgeois feminist movement. This study shows that the feminist culture movement in Korea – as manifested in the female filmmakers’ work on women labor –was rooted in the self-consciousness of the women workers who had to confront and overcome gender inequality as well as adversarial labor conditions.
