Can Individual MALL Be Sustainable?: A Case Study of Korean College Students

Mobile assisted language learning (MALL) has emerged as a potentially effective paradigm for the past two decades. However, the important question that still remains unanswered is its sustainability. The purpose of this research is to examine whether individual learners would be able to conduct sustainable MALL at a tertiary level and how learner factors affect the sustainability. For this study, fifty three college students in Seoul were asked to conduct individual MALL with their mobile applications, posted their study logs, and interacted with one another on social media for twelve weeks. In this process, one of the researchers, as a facilitator and an active participant, assisted the students to study English with mobile applications on their own and encouraged them to post their study logs as well as to interact with one another on social media. For the qualitative analysis, this study collected students’ study logs, collaborative talks on social media, and conducted an open-ended survey. The findings suggest that individual students actively participated in individual MALL overall. With the intervention of the facilitator, students’ degree of participation at a social networking service (SNS) gradually increased. The large collection of students’ collaborative talks constructed collective knowledge, social trust, and a huge information resource which enabled students tosustain MALL individually. SNS seemed to foster a learning community which was a virtual place to enhance self-directedness of individual MALL learners.
멀티미디어 어휘 주석과 학습자 인지 양식이 우연적 한국어 어휘 학습에 미치는 영향

This study examines the differential effect of four types of annotation on Korean incidental vocabulary learning in a multimedia reading setting and the interaction between learner`s cognitive style and annotation type by adult intermediate Chinese learners of Korean as a second language(N=43). As for the type of annotation, four groups were formed: A text annotation group, a picture annotation group, a text-picture mixed annotation group and a control group. And as for learners` cognitive style, it was divided into the visualizer and verbalizer. After dividing the entire into 4 groups, homogeneity pretest, reading comprehension test, unannounced immediate vocabulary posttest were conducted. The study found that the text-picture mixed group and the picture annotation group outperformed the text annotation group and the control group on the vocabulary test. However, there was no significant interaction between annotation type and cognitive style. The results showed that text-picture mixed annotation and picture annotation facilitate incidental vocabulary learning and that they can be used as an complementary method to incidental learning of enormous amounts of low frequency vocabulary which cannot be sufficiently covered in current KSL curriculum.
멀티미디어 도구를 활용한 PBL 수업의 효과: 대학 교양영어 수업 사례를 중심으로

This study aims to explore the pedagogical effectiveness of PBL (project-based learning) utilizing multimedia tools on English courses for communication. The research was carried out with a total of 50 university students whose English-speaking levels were pre-intermediate. The detailed report of the PBL case study, the students’ reflection journals and self-evaluation, the survey on the PBL classes, and the final lecture evaluation were analyzed qualitatively as well as quantitatively. The results showed that PBL provides various opportunities to use authentic English students want to express through structured activities. This makes their English knowledge transfer to procedural from declarative one, connecting English learning to their real life. The participants reported that PBL led them to establish a cooperative learning community that promotes a meaningful learning experience of practical English use in both online and offline learning environments. Moreover, in the process of completing the outcome of each project, their initiative and wholehearted behaviors were observed. Such empirical data suggests that PBL English classes, as an alternative to lecture-style ones which make students familiar with passive learning participation, can be highly effective for learners who have anxiety about English by promoting learning motivation through authentic learner-oriented projects.

Digital media are drastically redefining the ways we express ourselves and make sense of the world. Unfortunately, advocates of critical literacy often overlook the depths to which new media transform the nature of political expression. The purpose of this study is to begin exploring foundations for critical literacy theory and practice that better account for sensual and aesthetic aspects of meaning making. The researcher reports on a basic conversation course taught in a large university on the outskirts of Seoul. Data sources include field notes, student work from a collaborative class website, and small group interviews. Analysis suggests that learners utilized images, audio, video, and even physical objects to produce novel expressions with deliberate political consequences. While little explicit critique on the ideological content in digital texts emerged in the data, the analysis suggests that politically salient activities took place on the level of sensation. The paper concludes with a call to move beyond rational reflection as the sole foundation for critical thinking and a tentative framework that encompasses space, sensation and aesthetic production as viable spheres of critical literacy practice is offered.
