초등영어교육과정과 연계한 유아영어교육교재의 분석과 개발방향

The purpose of this study is to improve the quality of preschool English education textbooks based on the elementary English curriculum. The study reviews the current issues of preschool English education and analyzes previous studies on preschool English education for the purpose of identifying the realities of preschool English textbooks as well as preschool English education in Korea. After reviewing eight preschool English textbooks, the study found many textbook series and their teacher's guidebooks do not contain detailed development criteria such as the number of vocabulary and the limit of sentence length according to different preschool pupil age categories in their developing textbooks. The study indicates many words, expressions, and dialogues included in the preschool textbooks are inappropriate for their levels. The study finally insists that preschool textbook developers should consider detailed criteria in closer connection with elementary school textbooks. Related government organizations as well as publishing companies should have the proper reviewing system for better preschool English education textbooks.

The goal of this study is to demonstrate the value of autonomy in English language learning by exploring the relationship between learner autonomy and practical English skills. In this study, learner autonomy is examined with three subconstructs that may influence the level of learner autonomy: responsibility, self-confidence, and metacognitive strategy use. For the purpose of the study, the learner autonomy scale was developed and administered to 179 high school freshmen. In addition to the survey, 40 questions were selected from the PELT (Practical English Level Test) level 5, and the test was administered to the same students. For data analysis, correlation, regression, and multi-variate analysis of variance were performed. The findings from the multiple regression analysis revealed that metacognitive strategy use alone accounted for 53.4% of variance of practical English skills. When the variable of confidence was entered as another predictor, they all together predicted 54.9% of variance in English proficiency, which indicates that confidence accounted for only 1.5% of the variance. The findings of the study are discussed, along with their pedagogical implications.
초등 예비교사의 영어수업보조교사제를 통한 수업컨설팅 및 교육실습 강화 방안

The purpose of this study is to investigate the in- and pre-service teachers’ perceptions of English Teaching Assistant system that was introduced to enhance teaching practice of and instructional consulting for student teachers at elementary schools. This study uses a survey questionnaire and teaching journals to examine both in- and pre-service elementary school teachers' perceptions. Survey data and teaching journals were collected from 20 elementary teachers and 37 pre-service elementary English teachers who participated in the English Teaching Assistant system for a semester. The research data presents that both in- and pre-service teachers think the program positively effects pre-service teachers’ acquisition of teaching methods and understanding of elementary English education, and elementary school students’ English level. The results also show both in- and preservice elementary school teachers answered positively to questions on the introduction of this system. Moreover, the findings indicate that more time for teaching practice and for pre-discussion between in- and pre-service teachers on their job would be preferred by both kinds of teachers. In-service teachers suggest that the program should be strengthened to give the participants some additional points towards their course evaluation at their university or to adopt the program as a required course of the curriculum.

The purpose of this study is to measure and analyze English-focused gifted students’ vocabulary to establish an authentic guideline for English classes of gifted programs. Since 2002 when the Laws of Promotion of Gifted Education was issued in Korea, gifted programs have been run all over the nation. Some academic studies have been conducted regarding gifted programs of Science and Mathematics. This is pilot research on Korean/English bilingual gifted students with linguistic intelligence. This study focuses on measuring English vocabulary proficiency of English-focused gifted students(N=11) by comparing it to that of graduate students (N=31) majoring in English at a university. The four fields of vocabulary proficiency for comparison are: 1) headwords of Academic Word List, 2) receptive skills, 3) productive skills, and 4) cultural awareness. The data analysis shows that the vocabulary proficiency of gifted students is not statistically different to that of graduate students majoring in English in academic words, receptive skills, and productive skills. Gifted students, however, are obviously poor at cultural awareness, compared to graduate students. These research results will be the basis for creating and developing EAP(English for Academic Purposes) programs for gifted students at the secondary levels.

위내시경 촬영은 조기에 위 병변을 진단하기 위해서 주로 사용한다. 하지만 위내시경을 했음에도 불구하고 위 내부를 자세히 관찰하지 못해서 10~20% 위 병변을 놓치는 경우가 생기는 것으로 보고되고 있다. 미국, 영국, 일본 등의 일부 국가와 세계내시경협회(Wold Endoscopy Organization)에서는 위내시경 시에 맹점 없는 관찰을 위해서 반드시 촬영해야 할 부위에 대한 촬영지침을 제안한 바 있다. 이에 본 논문에서는 수련의가 내시경을 하는 데 있어 위 내부를 자동으로 맹점 없이 관찰하는데 필요한 딥러닝 기술인 해부학적 분류모델을 제안한다. 제안한 모델은 위내시경 이미지에 적합한 전처리 모듈과 데이터 증강 기술들을 사용한다. 실험결과를 통해 최대 F1 점수 99.6% 분류 성능을 확인하였다. 또한, 실제 데이터를 통한 실험결과에서도 에러율이 4% 미만을 보였다. 이러한 성능을 바탕으로 설명 가능한 모델임을 보여 임상에서의 사용 가능성을 확인하였다. Esophagogastroduodenoscopy is a method commonly used for early diagnosis of upper gastrointestinal lesions. However, 10-20 percent of the gastric lesions are reported to be missed, due to human error. And countries including the US, the UK, and Japan, the World Endoscopy Organization (WEO) suggested guidelines about essential gastrointestinal parts to take pictures of so that all gastric lesions are observed. In this paper, we propose deep learning techniques for classification of anatomical sites, aiming for the system that informs practitioners whether they successfully did the gastroscopy without blind spots. The proposed model uses pre-processing modules and data augmentation techniques suitable for gastroscopy images. Not only does the experiment result with a maximum F1 score of 99.6%, but it also shows a error rate of less than 4% based on the actual data. Given the performance results, we found the model to be explainable with the potential to be utilized in the clinical area.

This study examines the possibility of employing children’s literature in the kindergarten English classroom. For this examination, a teaching plan was prepared and classes were conducted in a kindergarten. The teaching plan was created by the idea of the literature-based whole language approach. It involved a picture storybook and a main activity of ‘reader’s theater’, in which readers (learners) play out story characters’ roles through dialogue reading. The classes were conducted by the researcher in a kindergarten as after-school English sessions with seven children. The classes were observed and recorded through field note writing. The recorded data were analyzed qualitatively for underlying patterns of language learning behaviors of the children. The analysis shows that the children seemed to be meaningfully engaged in the literature-based work. It also shows that the children exhibited features of productive language learning behaviors frequently observed in natural L2 learning situations of extensive exposure. This study concludes that literature can be a good tool to create a productive language learning environment where children can approach their work with initiatives and with authentic interest. Due to the scale and the method of this study, the conclusion needs to be taken with caution. Nevertheless, the positive result of this study suggests a further investigation on a large scale into possibilities of a literature-based English curriculum in the kindergarten.
초ㆍ중ㆍ고등학생들의 자기주도학습 인식 변화의 연도별 추이 및 국가수준 영어 학업성취도와의 상관관계 분석

This study aims to explore to what degree Korean primary and secondary school students perceive a self-regulated learning in their study and examine its trend through years. Furthermore, this study is also purposed to determine relationships between the students' self-regulated learning and their English achievements. This study analyzed a massive data set of the students' National Assessment of Educational Achievement (NAEA) and surveys which were collected and provided by Korea Institute for Curriculum and Evaluation (KICE). For data analysis, descriptive statistics and a multiple regression analysis were mainly conducted: the results indicated that students' perception in the self-regulated learning was vary depending their school levels and achievement levels and there were positive correlations between students' perception in the self-regulated learning and their English achievements.
효과적인 초등교사 해외영어연수프로그램 개발을 위한 제언

In South Korea, many in- and pre-service teachers are being sent to foreign countries for training programs based on the recent decisions of local educational offices and universities of education to send its current teachers as well as student educators abroad to enhance their teaching abilities. The study firstly proves that a 4-week program abroad has a significantly positive effect on improving participating teachers’classroom English proficiency when it includes a course of classroom English despite the relatively short period of training abroad. The participating elementary teachers who were involved in 3 different models in the Philippines and in the U.S.A, were given survey questionnaires to uncover their perceptions on the programs experienced while training abroad. The surveyed teachers’ perceptions were found to be overall satisfactory. Furthermore, ‘peer activity’ was rated as the most effective component of the program because of the authentic experience and practical applications within the training program. While the Philippine programs had many positive reviews in developing intensive and varied program contents, there was also strong criticism of the program’s shortcomings based on the social-language learning barriers. The study also suggests possible ways of heightening the effectiveness of the 4-week training abroad programs for future applications.
