        성장과 발전 : 한국영미어문학회 역사 60년 회고

        In commemoration of the 60th anniversary of the British and American Language and Literature Association of Korea (BALLAK), this paper is specially designed to explore the 60 years’ history of the society. The English Literary Society of Taegu was established on December 16, 1959, and the first volume of Taegu Review featuring four articles was issued in 1960. The fifth volume of Taegu Review composed of 11 articles was published in 1964 in honor of the 60th birthday of the late professor Wonam Lee Kyu Tong the first president of the society. The 34th volume appeared in 1983 for the celebration of the 60th birthday of the late professor Bongwun Kim Tae Han the president of the society. The BALLAK’s history might be divided into three phases: 1) the beginning period (1959-1972); 2) the growing period (1973-1995); 3) the developing period (1996-present). In the beginning period Taegu Review was published annually, in the growing period the journal was published biannually or triannually, and in the developing period it was published mostly quarterly and once bimonthly in 2013. The title of the English Literary Society of Taegu changed itself into the English Language and Literature Association of Taegu and Kyungpuk in 1992 and then finally into the British and American Language and Literature Association of Korea in 1996. In the meantime, the title of the journal Taegu Review was changed into Studies in British and American Language and Literature in 1996, when it began to develop from the regional journal towards the national one with the financial assistance from the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF). The 131th volume of Studies in British and American Language and Literature issued on December 31, 2018 boasts itself on the most numbered 22 articles in the publication history of the journal. I sincerely hope that the past 60 years’ history of the BALLAK firmly constructed upon the painstaking endeavors and incessant cooperative scholarship of our predecessors and contemporary scholars will surely illuminate the way to international conferences or journals for future generations of our society.

        학술지 『영미어문학』을 통한 영어학 연구 동향에 대한 고찰

        This study aims to show the trends of studies in English linguistics in Korean for the last six decades. We reviewed and analyzed the 220 linguistic articles published in Studies in British and American Language and Literature since 1960. First of all, it was found that linguistic research has been developed in quality as well as quantity in Korea. In the early period, Korean scholars adopted and introduced the data and the theories that western scholars already worked on. Later, they tested various theoretical frames on English and Korean data and began to conduct their own unique studies in linguistics. The topics have been elaborated into the details of language and additionally, empirical evidence has been embraced to guarantee the replicability as scientific studies. Lastly, linguistic studies in Korea have attempted to keep up with the trends in other academic fields and the society.

        『영미어문학』에 나타난 현대 영미드라마 연구의 동향과 비전

        This study aims to analyze the trends in the research on modern British and American Drama which was published in Studies in British and American Language and Literature in the last sixty years, and find new visions for future studies in modern drama. By reviewing 153 articles published from the birth of BALLAK(The British and American Language and Literature Association of Korea), this study found that many scholars made significant contributions to the growth and development of studies in modern drama through this journal. As a result, the journal now has distinctive characteristics informed by articles that deal with numerous important playwrights and a wide range of topics including feminism, postcolonialism, disability, and minority discourse. Therefore, it is expected that this journal will serve as a useful repository of research and provide opportunities for many new researchers who will publish various articles with new approaches.

        페미니즘 연구에 관한 비판적 고찰: 『영미어문학』을 중심으로

        This paper examinies 60 years' history of Studies in British and American Language and Literature, focusing on feminist literary approaches. Emerged from the long western history of women's struggle for equal opportunties, feminism has changed literary practices as well as every aspect of human lives. Since mid-1990s when feminist studies began in Engish academic circle, there have been a lot of literary works and practices in South Korea. The explorations are now moving from 'the established gender identity' to 'differences beween women' and 'alterity,' appropriating the western feminist theoretical trend. The remaining task is how to connect Enligh literature to Korean literature through feminism, which will make literary studies meaningful to our lives.

        대구ㆍ경북지역 영어교육 변천사와 영어영문학 연구사 : 1876년 개항부터 현재까지

        The purpose of this study is to examine the history of the education and research of English and English literature in Daegu and the northern part of Kyungsang Province, South Korea. First, I explore how economic development in the 1960s fueled the rapid expansion of English education. With the high demand for practical English, major changes have turned out in the quality and quantity of English teaching since 1980s. This field is undergoing many changes. However, it still remains whether the increase in quantity can lead to an improvement in quality of education. Secondly, I consider how well scholars of English Literature, usually connected to universities, have been received since the foundation of the language and literature program at Daegu Teacher's College in 1946. Our focus centers on their academic interests and teaching methodologies. The roles and achievements of Kwon, Joong-whi and Kim, Seong-hyuk, pioneers of English education in this area, are especially scrutinized. Finally, the outcome of this study shows how social changes and the tendency of studies in Seoul have affected English education in this area.

        한국 영미소설 연구의 동향 검토: 『영미어문학』을 중심으로

        This study reviews English novel studies in Korea for the past 60 years, to examine the ways in which English novel studies in Korea have developed and further contribute to the future of English scholarship in Korea. Since reflecting on all the English novel studies in Korea is immense, this study focuses on articles published in Studies in British and American Language and Literature from 1960 to 2019. Organizing the articles by decades, this review attempts to indicate the notable features of each decade and shows who was researched most actively. While Henry James was researched the most by far, William Faulkner, Joseph Conrad, and Virginia Woolf were the most favorite novelists throughout the last 6 decades. Female novelists, such as Jane Austen, Charlotte Brontë, and Virginia Woolf, were first introduced in the 1970s, which shed some light on the sharp increase in the study of female novelists for the coming years: Jane Austen topped the list in the 2000s and Toni Morrison in the 2010s. 2000s saw the most remarkable expansion in research: the number of the articles doubled and novelists from countries other than the British and American were first introduced. Korean scholarship on English novel studies has expanded not just in its number of articles, but also in its diversity.

        Engaging English Storybooks in the Child’s Spontaneous Play: A Case Study of a Young Korean-English Learner

        The benefits of learning English through stories have been well established in second language acquisition (SLA). However, few studies have examined how young English language learners (ELLs) link English storybooks to their spontaneous play. This study therefore aims to explore how a young Korean-English learner enacts English stories in her free home play in the immersion context. A review of selected literature examines the role of English storybooks in child SLA and in book-related dramatic play. This study takes the form of an exploratory case study involving a mother as researcher and her 5- year-old daughter participant. The data was collected from multiple sources including video and audio recordings, artwork and field notes. The findings identified three themes regarding the child’s book-related play: (1) acting out; (2) symbolic object transformation; and (3) emergent writing. Despite the limitations of case studies, it is concluded that this study has pedagogical implications for EFL practitioners and parents of young ELLs in Korea.

        A Contrastive Study of Compliment Responses among Korean and Dutch University Students

        Compliment responses (CRs) pose dilemma in the mind of the addressee (Pomerantz, 1978: 81) and it derives from two conversational principles: the need to avoid self-praise and the need to agree with the conversational co-participant. Speakers from different cultures use different strategies to solve the dilemma. This study analyzes CRs of Korean and Dutch university students and identifies the differences among them. The data were collected through a Discourse Completion Task (DCT), designed with four different situations. The results indicate that the Korean students use more Evasion and Rejection strategies than the Dutch students and the Dutch students have tendency to use more Acceptance strategies than their counterparts. Another finding is that the Korean students are more sensitive to the relative power between speakers (P), while the Dutch students are more sensitive to the social distance between the speakers (D) and the contents of a compliment. Also, when a compliment is interpreted as a Face Threatening Act (FTA), the Korean students tend to verbalize doubt and challenge the compliment giver’s sincerity, while the Dutch students still appreciate it using simple Appreciation token, not verbalizing their uncomfortable feeling. The findings indicate that compliments can be interpreted and used in different ways in each culture, so different face strategies are operated in CRs.
