존 파울즈의 신념과 교육: 『프랑스 중위의 여자』 다시읽기

본 논문의 목적은 『프랑스 중위의 여자(The French Lieutenant’s Woman)』 에서 작가가 무엇을 교육하고, 그것을 통해 제시하고자 하는 것이 무엇인지 알아봄으로써존 파울즈(John Fowles)의 작품세계를 이해하고 연구의 폭을 넓히는데 있다. 파울즈는 다양한 형식적 실험과 글쓰기 기법으로 가장 중요한 포스트모더니즘 작가 중 한 명으로 평가받는다. 하지만 ‘글쓰기는 일종의 교육’이라고 여기는 파울즈는 소설의 목적을 인간사회를개선할 수 있는 도덕적, 교육적 기능에 두고 그것을 자신의 작품과 인물을 통해 구현하려고한 작가이다. 그런 점에서 우리는 그의 작품을 교육적 측면에서 다시 읽을 필요가 있다. 파울즈의 인물들은 ‘소수자’(The Few)와 ‘다수자’(The Many)로 구분되는데, 그의 교육적 신념은 좋은 교육을 받은 지적이고 독립적인 소수자가 그것을 다수자와 나누어야 한다는 것이다. 『프랑스 중위의 여자』의 남성 주인공인 찰스(Charles)는 사라(Sarah)에 의해 소수자가 되도록 교육받게 된다. 사라는 소수자이며 자유를 추구하며, 나아가 예술가의 형태로 존재하는 ‘아리스토스’(Aristos)이다. ‘아리스토스’는 파울즈가 제시하는 이상적인 개인이며, 이 교육의 과정을 통해 작가의 신념을 알 수 있다. The purpose of this study is to understand John Fowles as a novelist and broaden the ground of studying his works by identifying what he wanted to teach and purposes from his education in The French Lieutenant’s Woman. Fowles is considered to be one of the most important postmodernism novelists in his various formal experiments and writing techniques. But He believes that ‘writing is a kind of teaching’ and the purpose of the novel is moral, educational function on improvement of life. Fowles tries to embody this educational belief in his novels and characters. So We necessarily reread his novel from the educational side. The characters in his novels can be divided into The Few and The Many. What Fowles teaches is that people should become The Few who are intellectual and independent with good education and then share it with The Many. In The French Lieutenant’s Woman, the male protagonist, Charles is educated to be The Few by Sarah. Sarah is The Few and Aristos who embodies the moral, philosophical views of Fowles and his educational intention and belief can be revealed most during the education.
