It is the purpose of this study to propose a framework indicating the direction any future attempt to reform the general education curriculum of our university ought to take in our opinion. The purpose of general education is determined by the educational idea a particular university sets for itself, and how it defines the universal qualities of an ‘educated person.” The idea of education our university holds for itself is taken to be the realization of truth, goodness and beauty in human world through the act of love and service to mankind. Accordingly, the characteristics qualifying an “educated person” would be deduced therefrom and analyzed in a few items. A core curriculum for general education should be organized through a collective deliberation, across 7~8 areas of study, religion, communication, cultural heritage, arts, logical thinking, science, historical consciousness and international awareness, for example. 6∼10 courses would be prepared for each of these 8 areas, 1∼3 core courses made common and obligatory and the rest elective. A sttudent would be required to take a minimum amount of credit points as would be established For religion, however, 2 courses would be enforced as required 2 or less points would be assigned to the core courses and 3 or less points to the general and optional curses. 30%∼35% of general education would be desirable out of total credit points required for graducation, and the general education courses should be distributed across entire 4 years. general education curriculum would be subdivided into : common required, elective required and general elective(obligatory for the majoring students).
