        The Purpose of this study is (1) to assess biological literacy of high school teachers in Chonnam area, (2) to describe the patterns of biological literacy with respect to several variables. The participants in this study were 263 high school teachers in Chonnam area. Their biological literacy was measured by a renewed the Test of Biological Literacy. Most high school teachers in Chonnam area were biologically literate. Teachers undertaking mathematics or science have higher biological literacy than those in the art and physical education department. Teachers being in the graduate students obtained higher grade in evaluation than those graduating a university or a grduate school. There was no significant difference statistically according gender for whole question of biological literacy test. There was no significant difference considering the variants of education career. When the major of university wasc assified into the education college and non-education college, there was no difference in the biological literacy between both. In addition, the difference according the age was negligible. In this respect, all the high school teachers regardless of their major should try to improve their biological literacy in order to teach students living in the 21st century the century of information.

        A self- directed learning program for scientifically gifted was developed for the science-gifted in a middle school. The program was constructed on the base of self-directed learning model of Treffinger(1982) and focused on the materials in hydrodynamics. The resources developed were applied to both the students in a gifted class and a advanced-course class in Il san Dong Middle School. The students were instructed to do creative and self-directed study activities.

        We have tried to investigate the life cycle of Pogonatum nessü(C. Muell) Dozy from February, 2000 to October, 2001 by observing a habitat and culturing a spore or through the observation of light microscope and SEM. The life cycle of the sexual reproduction of Pogonatum nessii is as followings. Spores are distributed from the capsule of sporophyte, then germinated and develop the protonema. Buds and rhizoids are differentiated from the node of protonema and grown into gametophytes about in the March. The male gametophyte continues to grow and develops the antheridia in the stem apex from the end of December. From the end of June of the next year to the mid of July, sperms are released from about 300-500 mature antheridias with the 200 -1700 μ m length. The female gametophyte continues to grow and develops the archegonia in the stem apex from the end of June of the next year to the mid of July. The egg cell in the archegonia is fertilized with the sperm which is carried in rain drops and becomes the zygote. Doing the mitosis continuously, the zygote develops the sporophyte over the female gametophyte. The sporophyte consists of a seta, a capsule and a calyptra. A capsule and a calyptra are removed in the end of January of next year. In the mid of February, a operculum is separated and spores are distributed. The asexual reproduction is made as the gemma is differentiated and becomes the gametophyte in the paπ of rhizome in which a rhizoid is developed The contents of "observation of Polytrichum commune" in a text book of high school are explained inaccurately in paπs. Also, observing Polytrichum COmm1une around is difficult. Therefore, it is suggested that the contents are to be re~composed of "observation of Pogonatum nessii" which is easily observed.

      • B¹¹ 핵자기공명 기술에 의한 K=0.1인 Li₂O-B₂O₃-SiO₂ 유리계의 구조 연구

        The Bll NMR techniques have been used to study the structure of glasses in the system Li20-B20a-A120a(K = 0.1, where K = mol. % Al20a/mol. %B20a). The values of Nh the fraction of borons in the tetrahedral coordination with, oxygen, were measured and analyzed as a function of (where, R=mol. % Li20 / mol. % B20 a). The results have indicated that;(l) the R 1s,(=0.46) glass ,consists mainly of the lithium di-pentaborate units and the 1st modified lithium <liborate units, (2) the Rma,,( = 0.65) glass consists mainly of the lithium diborate units and the 2nd modified lithium diborate units.

      • 포항 인근 대륙사면 퇴적층에서 산출되는 규편모류

        To consider water-mass and depositional environments in the near-shore area of Pohang, paleontological studies on silicoflagellates sensitive to water temperatures and sedimentary reworking were carried out in the area. 22 silicoflagellate species(bearing a variety and a forma) belonging to 5 genera were identified in core sampled from the area. In the silicoflagellate assemblages from the cores, Dictyocha is predominant, compared to Distephanus in occurrences. Other genera were very rare in frequency. Dominant species for Dictyocha are D. aculeata and D. fibula. Distephanus speculum is a dominant one for Distephanus. Relatively high frequency of Dictyotha indicate that warm Tsushima Current is very active over the area. Ts values measured from those assemblages support the active influx of the current. However, cold water-mass is also converged to the area on the basis of the enhanced frequency portions of Distephanus speculum and the existence of D. octangulatus. In the area, dark silicoflagellate specimens were more abundant than transparent ones. Those occurrences were maybe resulted from sedimentary reworking and redeposition by active turbidity currents on continental slopes. Associated with turbidity currents, the sedimentary turbulences probably bring about results as the enhanced frequencies of D. speculum specimens related with sorting and the pre-Quaternary species mixture. Synthesizing above results, it is considered that sediments on slopes in the area are formed under the influences of active Tsushima Current and turbiditic sedimentation. 동해 해저 지형의 경사는 일본 혼슈우(Honshu)의 서측 연안에서는 전반적으로 완만한 경사를 이루고 있으나 우리 나라 연안 에서는 대륙붕이 협소하고 대륙사면으로 연장되는 급경사를 이루고 있다. 동해의 해저 는 야마토 해령(Yamato Ridge)을 경계로 좌측에 올룽분지(Ulleung Basin), 우측에 야마토 분지(Yamato Basin)가 위치하고 이 해령의 북측에서는 동서로 신장되는 장방형의 일본분지(Japan Basin)가 넚게 자리하고 있다. 또한 동해에는 울릉분지와 일본분지 사이를 연결하는 울릉 인터플레인 갭(Ulleung Inter-plain Gap)등의 저지도 존재한다. 이와 같은 여러 가지 특성 때문에 동해의구조와 해양지질학적 특성에 대한 다양한 관점의 연구들이 이루어져 왔다.(Beloussov and Rudvitch, 1961, Uyeda and miyashiro,1974, Michael :and Robert, 1987, Tamari,1988). 이러한 연구들에 의하면 동해의 해저는 판의 가장자리에 위치한 일본열도의 배후에 위치하여 후배호 분지(back-arc basin)적인 특성을 가지고 있으며 해양지각의 섭입(subduction)과 연관되어 해양지각의 부분용융(partial melting)에 기인한 구조로 해석되고 있다. 최근에는 이러한 동해의 구조적인 연구들과 병행하여 동해의 특징적인 퇴적물의 분포상과 퇴적환경에 대한 연구들이 다수 수행되고 있다.

      • 지구과학 교과에 사용된 한자 용어의 이해도

        We recognize that many earth science terms are written in Chinese Characters in middle and high school textbooks. We investigate whether students with more knowledge of Chinese Character get higher academic adaptability in inquiry activities using the concept and understanding level of earth science terms than the students with less knowledge of Chinese Character. And we analyze which relationship exist between two groups. Surveyed students are second graders in high schools in nationwide who finished first semester right now. We research them through self-developed questionnaire considering students learning level. We use technical statistics to verify the interrelationship among questions and significance of research results. The study results are that students with more Chinese Character knowledge show high understanding level and high correct answer rate in inquiry questions using concept. However, the students with little knowledge also show high correct answer rate in inquiry question using concept but there is only a little difference on the level of concept understanding for earth science education is linearly connected from elementary school to high school. We will conclude that Chinese Character learning will help understand better concept but the lack of knowledge about Chinese Character will not be obstacle to understand the concepts in earth science futhermore to do inquiry activities using the concept

      • 굴절률에 의한 χLi₂O·y(B₂O₃·0.1Al₂O₃) 유리계의 구조 해석

        The ternary xLizO . y(B20 3 . O:lAh03) glasses were made spanning the glass forming region as a function of R(=mole% Li20/mole% B203) and (=mole%AlzOJimole%B20 3). The refractive index of glasses were measured at several wavelengths (430.8nm, 486.1nm, 527.0nm, 589.0nm, 653.3nm, 687.0nm). The measured values were spanned in the range of 1.4864-' l.6136. These values have been analyzed as a function of R to facilitate of the studies on the structure of glasses. The results have indicated that; 0) the addition of lithium oxide in pure boron glasses converts B03 units with a little polarizability to B04- units and B03- units with a large one, (2) in the region of a little content of lithium, the refractive index values depend on the content of the lithium first .thing, (3) in. the region of a high content of lithium, the tangent of ,an increase of the refractive inqex is reduced because the glasses get the increase of an opening of the structure and a molar volume, (4) the polarizability of B03- unit with a lithium ion is smaller than it of B04 - unit with the same ion.

      • Nafion-Ethylene Diamine Tetra Acetic Acid가 수식된 유리탄소전극에 의한 Cadmium(Ⅱ)의 측정

        The selective method for determination of trace metal cadmium( II) using nafion-ethylene diamine tetra acetic acid (EDT A) - modified glassy carbon electrode is proposed. The functionality of nafion-EDTA modified glassy carbon electrode shows excellent sensitivity for determination of cadmium( II). The reduction peak potentials of differential pulse voltammetry are observed at 0.440 V (: 0.005 vs. Ag/ AgCI). For a five minute preconcentration period, a linear calibration curve is obtained for cadmium(II) concentrations ranging from 1.0x 10⁻¹⁰ M to 1.0 x 10⁻⁷ M in pH2 buffer solution, and the detection limit is 5.0X 10⁻¹⁰ M.

      • 고온과 저온에서의 2차원 전자기체의 교환효과에 관한 연구

        In contrast to the metal electrons, the electrons in a two-dimensional system show a relatively large correlations in very wide density range. We have evaluated analytically the effects of the exchange interactions at the high and low temperatures under the weak magnetic field. Besides, we have derived some thermodynamic quantities with dHvA oscillations. And the effects of the exchange graphs on the magnetic susceptibility are presented.
